Mama of a stubborn, smelly Dachshund

I’m TME’s resident artist/fashionista. My style is best described, I think, as boho, romantic and breezy. I’m a Southern girl at heart (raised in Texas and NC,) and I live in Grand Rapids now. No kids yet, just a STUBBORN, smelly Dachshund, and an equally stubborn and smelly boyfriend, Jonathan. As a kid, I absolutely adored my super-glamorous, totally ‘80s, big-haired, Texan grandma. Everything she owned was covered in sequins, colored brightly and fabulous. I spent hours in her closet trying on her clothes and jewelry. She was a firecracker who wore what made her happy and with such confidence….I always admired that.

Jess’s FAQ

Let’s get the basics out of the way: where you live, etc.:

I’m a Southern girl at heart (raised in Texas and NC) and I’ve lived in Grand Rapids for over 2 years now. No kids yet, just a STUBBORN, smelly Dachshund, and an equally stubborn and smelly boyfriend Jonathan.

Three words to describe your personal style. Go.:

Ugh, this one’s hard…boho, vintage, chic.

Who are your style icons? How do you integrate those tastes into your own wardrobe if at all?:

As a kid, I absolutely adored my super-glamorous, totally ’80s, big-haired, Texan grandma. Everything she owned was covered in sequins, colored brightly, and fabulous. I spent hours in her closet trying on her clothes and jewelry. She was a firecracker who wore what made her happy and with such confidence….I always admired that.

What’s your most-worn piece? (If it’s sweatpants…we won’t tell.):

Okay you got me, I love my Alo yoga leggings.

Sometimes it’s hard to gauge height from an Instagram or blog post – SO…how tall are you?:

So funny story, I always thought 5ft 6-ish, but at the doctor’s recently they measured me at 5ft 8”, so dreams do come true.

Your top three beauty products?:

bareMinerals complexion rescue, any dark/bold colored lipstick, and amazing cosmetics anti-aging face primer.

What drew you to blogging and when did you start?:

I’m really introverted and writing has always been a major outlet for me. I’ve kept a journal since I learned how to write, and I started blogging or  “liveblogging” in college while working in an orphanage in the Philippines, and I’ve been doing it in some form ever since.

Special talents:

I know all the lyrics to any Disney song made in the ’90s (seriously don’t watch Disney movies with me).

What’s your favorite thing to do to decompress?:

Yoga, painting and reading. I get out of sorts when I don’t have a good book to read.

What did you dream of being when you were young?:

A broadway actress. The highlight of my career was being Pepper the Mean Orphan in Texas Tech University’s production of Annie. Shortly after that, I realized I couldn’t sing a lick.

What’s one fashion risk you love to see on others but would NEVER take yourself?:

I like taking risks with my style so there’s not much I wouldn’t wear …oh I know…a Brazilian thong bikini — I seriously have nightmares about them. But self-confidence is the sexiest look, so you go Glen Coco!
