I’m love a mix of sporty, preppy and edgy…together, all in one look. Things in my forever closet? High-end tees, cool sweatshirts, classic coats + blazers, moto jackets, straight leg jeans, black jeans, jeans with the perfect vintage wash and distressed knees, ALL the sneakers (especially high tops) and a killer body-con midi dress (sometimes worn with said sneakers) for my version of (occasionally) dressing up. My style inspirations are Gillian Anderson, Tilda Swinton, Clare V, Kule, Isabel Marant Étoile, J.Crew (that layering) and Allsaints.

Laura’s FAQ

Let’s get the basics out of the way: where you live, how many kids, etc.:
I live in Portland, Oregon with my husband, Pinky (long story…legendary); 8-year-old daughter, Sienna; a pup named Camper; and a cat named Bernie Sanders.
Three words to describe your personal style. Go.:
Sporty, Edgy, Ever-so-slightly Classic
Who are your style icons? How do you integrate those tastes into your own wardrobe if at all?:

I mostly take inspiration from street style, but I do love Alexa Chung’s easy/classic/polished style and Kristen Stewart’s (yes, the girl from Twilight, don’t judge — did you see her play Joan Jett?!) girl-rocker style. What I love most is mixing a bit of casual/sporty pieces with a touch of femme and a touch of edgy. An interesting balance of unexpected pieces is always my ultimate goal. i.e. If I do wear a dress or feminine blouse I usually grab my moto jacket. If I’m wearing mostly sporty pieces, I’ll be sure to have on lipstick and earrings. And always, always on the hunt for the perfect graphic tees.

How has your personal style changed since becoming a mom?:
I definitely have more things on repeat and surprisingly I dress less classicly femme than I did before having S. I got out of wearing skirts and dresses I think because they’re inconvenient with a kiddo and haven’t looked back. Jeans are my jam.
What’s your most-worn piece? (If it’s sweatpants…we won’t tell.):
Jeans. Always jeans. My favorites are black washed straight leg (like these), but I’m a sucker for a great faded blue jean, too. (like these)
Sometimes it’s hard to gauge height from an Instagram or blog post – SO…how tall are you?:
5’4″ (yep, right between petite and regular…let’s just hope raw hem jeans stay foreverrrr)
Your top three beauty products?:
What drew you to blogging and when did you start?:
I used to blog more about my lifestyle and creative/artistic pursuits, but started following and interacting with The Mom Edit after Sienna was born. I joined the team officially in December 2015 (yes, OG contributor!) after becoming online friends with Shana and sharing some of my outfits inspired by her!
What does a typical day look like? How do you manage time with kids vs blogging (or work)?:
On the days Sienna is in school, I manage quite well, like a sane person even! I’m an introverted parent of an extroverted child and I think I should start a support group for us, no? She literally won’t go in the little reading nook I made for her in my office closet. We are not the same. (I would’ve DIED for one of those when I was little).
After the craziest, worst days we all find salvation in seeing our kids. What’s your
favorite thing to do with them to decompress?:
Kitchen dance parties, for sure. Best. Ever. I’m trying to get in the habit of stopping and having one any time stresses are high. It always helps. Plus, Sienna’s moves are amazeballs and yes, I taught her everything she knows. Current favs are: anything by Bieber, Sia, Gaga, and Stevie Wonder…with a little K-Pop thrown in for good measure.
If you could give only one piece of advice to a timid, new mom (we’ve been there), what would it be?:
You WILL feel like yourself again before long. Don’t get discouraged with all the new. Find something to do for yourself, like taking a little time at a coffee shop weekly or whatever you can manage. It’s all-renewing. As far as fashion, don’t buy too many jeans too soon (guilty), find an outfit combo you feel badass in and put it on repeat, and snuggle in and enjoy that slower time with your babe…because pretty soon they’ll be big enough to say to their preschool teacher in a video “I’m happy of school. I don’t miss my mommy.
What did you dream of being when you were young?:
A professional dancer, read: for Janet or Michael Jackson.
What’s one fashion risk you love to see on others but would NEVER take yourself?:
Heavier makeup. Other people look gorgeous in it. I would look like (and have felt like) a clown.
