Here’s a little story about a girl who loves jumpsuits…she rolled into her local Free People one day to make some returns and peruse the new inventory. She passed up all the bell bottoms and lacy tops, and a light shone for her on one lone item…a knit utility jumpsuit! And all was right with the world. She ran to the boho-curtained dressing room as fast as she could, only wondering if she should try the black version or the red. The end.
A Swoon-Worthy Utility Jumpsuit & 8 Ways To Wear It
Haha. Well, let me just say why, oh why has no one come out with a jersey knit utility jumpsuit before now?? You know I love my rad coveralls version, but it is a little trickier to wear and definitely not a summertime piece. But this…this! Soft t-shirt fabric with the cool jumpsuit styling. I mean, it wasn’t hard to jump (ha) on board for this one. So, I thought I’d tell you a little story, and then get down to brass tacks and style it up for y’all, per usual. Here we go, friends.
Utility Jumpsuit Look 1: Rolled Sleeves & Espadrilles
So, this is where I started. When I got home from Free People, I styled it this way for the warmer temps…and promptly wore it like two times in three days. So, so comfy and yet something new and unique! The jumpsuit has long sleeves that are easily rolled and a cool tie at the waist. I find it’s cute tied to the side a bit, as well. The fit is oversized, and I wound up in an XS. I roll the legs up, too, for a custom fit! I like to undo a couple of buttons at the top for a summery-v vibe, but it’s cute buttoned up for later, too. Oh, and because I know y’all will ask, this is easy to get in and out of! You only untie the waist and unbutton a few easy buttons!

Utility Jumpsuit Look 2: Espadrilles & Stepped-Up Accessories
OK, so this has a little more of an interesting vibe, although there’s nothing wrong with look one, but Shana & Scotti will be so proud of me for accessorizing on this one. Look! Earrings! And this belt bag is my life now. I love how it breaks up the jumpsuit with the great snake pattern. It actually holds what I need, too, unlike some of the smaller styles. Winning.

Utility Jumpsuit Look 3: Cute Animal Print Mules & A Pop of Gold
I wasn’t planning on keeping these mules because I tried them out for our recent trip to the polo match and wound up not wearing them that day. But…I have grabbed them for nearly every other semi-dressy outfit lately! They’re so good. Yes, they are a mule so they flip on your foot a bit, but they come up higher than some others making them easier to wear. Walk all over the city in these? Probably not, but perfect for what I’m terming light-walking events like date night, brunch, the office, etc.,.

Utility Jumpsuit Look 4: Doc Martens & A ’90s Vibe
Stay tuned for my upcoming combat boot post, but LOVING these Doc Martens and had to throw them on with this. I almost grabbed a plaid button down, but then I realized a) I don’t have one anymore (bad Portlander) and b) that might just lean a little too grunge for today. This light chambray jacket does the trick for now though. A jean jacket would also be cute.

Utility Jumpsuit Look 5: Doc Martens & Animal Print Bag
Sans jacket + leopard = something I’d wear like every day this fall. Love.

Utility Jumpsuit Look 6: Oversized Jean Jacket & White Boots
This is a fun combo for early fall. I can’t tell you how much I’ve loved having a pair of white boots (and I find going slightly off-white is easier to wear). They’re fresh and a little mod, and very current compared to tan boots these days.

Utility Jumpsuit Look 7: Animal Print Coat & Sneakers
UM. YES. I love this. And for everyday winter/late fall, picture a beanie on my head and maybe smaller earrings. Any printed coat would be great here, especially a plaid, but I’m digging the leopard, of course.

Utility Jumpsuit Look 8: Animal Print Coat Dressed Up
And yeahhhhhh, done. The next event where it’s cool enough to wear this combo, I’m doing it. It’s got everything: comfy jumpsuit that feels like PJs, flattering-yet-walkable heels, killer-yet-practical overcoat. #itme

It’s all about the accessories when it comes to dressing up or mixing-up this jumpsuit. And you could totally apply this to a heavier utility jumpsuit, too, when the temps drop. I knew I’d love this piece, but didn’t know it’d be quite so versatile. I do think the drape of the jersey knit makes it easier to style various ways and of course makes it easier to wear!

Hey, friends. Hop on over to follow me on Instagram @laurajansenstyle to see more of what I’m up to in Portland, Oregon. If you want to shop my current pieces I’m loving and wearing, head over to My Closet!
I recently posted on Instagram that I needed a black jumpsuit intervention, as there are currently five in my closet right now and two in other shopping bags waiting to be purchased. I think you just found the next one I need! Also, I’m borderline obsessed with the leopard print coat. I love the coat and nude sandals look! And, Doc Martens forever. I never fully gave them up, but for the past three or four years, they’ve been my most worn shoe for colder months. I’ll be wearing them when I’m 90, I think.
Um, pics when you’re 90 and rocking Docs, please!!! 😉 xo
Wow! I’ve been on the fence with jumpsuits (long waisted gal here), but this post may have made up my mind. One question…from the FP site, it looks like the crotch is a bit low. Do you feel this is the case? Or just low enough to be comfy? Thanks mama!
Fitting jumpsuits is a tricky game for sure, but I think this one leaves enough room for a variety of heights! It is a little low but to me doesn’t look too dropped crotch but just a comfy fit. hope that helps!!
My jumpsuit argument started with being 5-foot-3 and getting “lost” in said jumpsuit and then continued in the restroom. (Just have to plan accordingly!!) I have arrived. If you like super soft and easy to wear…check out Lou & Grey jumpsuits at LOFT. You won’t want to take them off!! Time to add more long-hanging space in the closet!! Might have just ordered my fourth jumpsuit (or is it five?! Six?!): Black Lou & Grey. Planning to wear now with red Everlane day glove flats and later with as many booties as possible. Of course…now – I’ll have to ponder a utility style. Thanks Laura. (More long-hang space please.) Love you TME!!!
