You know I have a thing for clean, natural beauty products. I wouldn’t say I’m a junkie by any means (nor anything even close to a makeup artist), but I cleaned up my beauty routine ’round about the time I was pregnant — and then again when the whole cancer thing happened. Today, I’d say I’m…maybe 80% clean. (Or, hey, 100% on days when I’m too lazy to pick up a single product! Which is…not not often…) There are some conventional products that will always have a home in my makeup drawer (I still haven’t outgrown the NARS Orgasm blush I’ve been wearing since forever), but when it comes to finding new faves, I try to narrow the scope to products that are at least on the cleaner, safer end of the spectrum.
Nordstrom Natural Beauty & Wellness: A Review Of 9 New-To-Me Products
I’m not sure why it took me so long to realize there’s a Natural Beauty & Wellness category within Nordstrom’s Beauty department — but, dang, is that handy! (As if I needed shopping at Nordstrom to be any more appealing. The famous customer service, free shipping and returns, handy curbside (contact-free) pick-up — and let’s not forget The Nordy Club and all its year-long perks. There’s a reason it’s one of our team’s favorite places to shop.)
Oh, but wait friends — there’s a Sustainable Beauty section, too. You’re probably shaking your head — duh, Emily, where have you been? To which I say then why didn’t you tell meeeeee?
So, anyway, upon this discovery, I skimmed the thousand or so products within the Natural Beauty & Wellness category, ordered a small haul, and ended up with nine new-to-me products that have earned a place in my regular routine. Some of them I knew I’d love right off the bat (Kosas mascara — you fluffy, buildable babe, you). Others, like this shave oil and this deep sleep hack, were a total surprise. I’ve detailed all of them below — in no particular order.
Quick note: Nordstrom has done their fair share of homework and specifies that Natural Beauty & Wellness products are free of sulfates, phthalates, parabens, petrochemicals, mineral oil, silicone and talc; also free of BPAs and GMOs — but specific ingredients can also be found on every product listing if there are particular ingredients you’re trying to avoid.
I’m just going to paste the description from the Nordstrom site here so you can see why this literally jumped into my cart:
Age-defying rosehip seed works to rewind the clock by blurring the appearance of fine lines and boosting skin’s natural glow. Omegas strong in vitamin E help to soothe inflammation and the appearance of redness while natural antioxidants rescue skin from the oxidation process that helps keep it plump and dewy. Ginger root extract, a natural anti-inflammatory, helps improve skin structure, promote circulation and soothe inflamed skin. It’s fast-absorbing and non-greasy.
Natural glow!! Plump and dewy!! And all those other words, too. Obviously I had to try it — even though at $70, it’s up there in terms of what I typically spend on skincare. I’ve only been using this for a couple of weeks, but I can already tell it’s lovely. A little goes a long way, the scent is exceptionally light and luscious and it does feel soothing on my suddenly sensitive and more often irritated skin. (Blaming the masks.) Best of all, it’s delivering on the plump and dewy thing. I’ve never looked…glowier? post-evening routine. And in the morning, I mix a single drop into my daily serum or moisturizer and they glide on like silk. Love.
My current shaving routine could be summed up by the words “occasional” and “with conditioner.” As in…I don’t put a lot of time nor effort into it. (Very small chemo perk is that I generally don’t have as much to shave, but even so, I’m just…lazy.) So I made this purchase very intentionally — could a luxury shave product change my habit? Turns out: yes!
I’ve literally starting shaving my legs twice as often since using this oil just because I enjoy the process more. Quite possibly the most minimal shave product ever, and yet it performs. A single (small) pump of oil is enough for each leg, and mixed with just a smidge of water (or wet skin) it lathers up ever so slightly. It’s moisturizing and silky, lightly scented but super soothing even on sensitive skin (the bikini line is real happy) and, yeah. Good stuff. No clogged razors, so my blade feels sharper longer, too. At the rate I typically shave (or even doubled or tripled), this bottle will last a good long time, too.
I’ve seen products from “it” brand Nécessaire all over social media, so I was excited to get my hands on this. Ha. They’ve been through the wringer this year with all the handwashing and alcohol-based sanitizing, and I just wanted something rich, fragrance-free and non-greasy. This promises all three — and it delivers. There is literally no fragrance. Not even really a fragrance-free fragrance, if you know what I mean. And it is fast-absorbing and non-greasy. No slicked up phone screen or computer keys. I love the super-minimal, sleek metal tube, too. Feels clinical, in a cool way. Is it a little pricey for a hand cream? Perhaps. But it would make a great gift. (And given the lack of manicures I’ve been getting over the past nine months, a tube of hand cream seems like a worthy splurge for my dry cuticles.) Made in the USA — and vegan!
Another cult product from Nécessaire, and here’s the deal. First few showers? Wasn’t tremendously impressed. I loved the scent (I bought the Eucalyptus, and it’s subtle and very reminiscent of a spa; not at all overpowering) but it didn’t feel luxurious. Or as luxurious as I was hoping for the price. But then I skipped using it on my usual loofah and instead applied it directly to my skin (away from the direct spray of the shower) and — ah, there we go. The texture is thick and silky, and it froths up into a very gentle lather (akin to many oil-based cleansers) — and it does leave skin feeling lovely and soft. So, yeah, I’m a bit of a convert — and anxious to try the Sandalwood scent, too. If you’re looking to inject a bit of a spa experience into your shower routine, this not-too-splurgy splurge is worth it.
Kat has been talking up Kosas for a while, and I’m always looking for the next natural, truly buildable mascara. Friends, this does not disappoint! I shamelessly love big, bold lashes (I even kinda veer into doll lash territory on the bottoms), and you can totally achieve that here. Of course, a generous swipe or two is more than adequate for more average lash enhancement…but when I wear mascara, I wear mascara. This has definitely earned a regular spot in my makeup drawer. Oh! And there’s a mini, too, which would be a great way to trial the product — or perfect for travel or a desk touch-up kit.
The sidekick for my shameless mascara addiction? Shamelessly glossy lips. I will almost always choose lip gloss over lipstick, so I was totally drawn to this cute little trio of prismatic colors. These colors aren’t as intensely sparkly as they look online — but they’re juicy and shimmery and, yes, plumping. Free of parabens, sulfates, alcohol and silicone; vegan, cruelty-free and made in the USA. Also super-intrigued by BECCA’s Glow Gloss line, which offers the same plumping properties, but with a bit more saturation and a range of colors more akin to traditional lipsticks. Of course I’m partial to the nude Opal. Freaking gorgeous.
I’ve been using Bare Minerals for…ever? Fifteen years, something like that. Their loose eyeshadows are SO much easier to apply than you would think, crazy buildable and blendable, and the shimmer is fine enough that it looks age appropriate (and doesn’t settle unflatteringly into creases). I love their neutral earth tones best. In The Buff is such a pretty, light-filled shade (not too golden or too peachy) — and for the holidays, both Black Ice and Pussycat (shown here) blend out into an easygoing almost-smoky eye that feels really effortless.
8 / thisworks Deep Sleep Pillow Spray
(oooh, and thisworks Deep Sleep Trio)
Everything thisworks makes gets great reviews, and this is no exception. And I have been mega burning the candle at both ends lately, so anything that kicks me into sleep mode when I finally retreat to bed — and quickly coaxes me into restorative slumber so I can start over again wayyyy too early? Well, I want that. This pillow spray is instantly soothing. And I don’t know if it’s the spray, itself, or the idea that committing to using the spray means I’m committing to sleep, but I do find that I fall asleep faster — and dang, does it smell good! Ooohhh, and thisworks also sells a cool Deep Sleep trio that includes the pillow spray, Deep Sleep Shower Gel and Deep Sleep Body Cocoon for the full relaxation experience — all for $35. It was out of stock when I snagged the pillow spray solo, but it’s back in stock now and would make such a fab gift.
I’ve got a relatively clean diet (key word being relative) and I still suffer from a fair amount of bloat. Maybe it’s all the fibrous greens. Maybe it’s the cheese intake. (Kidding. I have almost completely nixed cheese — insert big ol’ sadface here.) Anyway, this supplement has a proprietary blend of 18 enzymes that help with digestion and nutrient absorption, and I can honestly say, my tummy has never been happier. And, yeah, flatter.
Obviously I’m going to serve this up with the super big disclaimer that this is not a weight-loss supplement nor am I using it that way, and it’s always best to do your own research (or consult a professional) before you introduce new supplements to your diet, but I feel noticeably more comfortable throughout my middle when I take this daily. (And yes, it aids in moving things right along in a very measured, non-urgent way, too.) Even better: I order this monthly from Nordstrom and look forward to it contributing to my year-end Nordy Club status. (Every little bit helps…right?)
