Ah, summertime. The nostalgic sound of the lawn mower, the quiet mornings spent sipping coffee on the porch, long afternoons under the hot sun followed by the best naps for everyone in the family.
And maybe, just maybe, a blissful weekend getaway (or full-blown summer vacation?!) to the beach!
I’ve been fortunate enough to not only live in a little beach town for most of my life but also to have a job as a photographer that has allowed me to travel a lot. I’ve become — if I can toot my own horn here — somewhat of a master at knowing how to prepare for long days under the sun, and even for those long travel days sometimes required to get there.
Travel Ready: Must-Have Summer Beauty Products For Healthy, Glowing Skin
Whether you have grand travel plans this season, or perhaps are simply blowing up a kiddy pool in the backyard and creating your own oasis, I have a foolproof summer beauty essentials list to keep your skin healthy — and glowing — the whole season long. The best part? You can grab every item from Nordstrom (hello, Nordy Club points)!!
My Top 6 Sun Protection Products
I rely on the six products below to protect my skin and hair, so I can enjoy all the fun in the sun! From Supergoop Lip Balm to their Mineral Part Powder (don’t forget the scalp), these sunburn-preventing products are a must-have for the beach bag.
All of the Supergoop products are pretty amazing, but this sunscreen is absolutely unlike any other I’ve tried. It goes on so silky smooth on my face, almost just like a thick moisturizer. Plus, it can double as a makeup primer (I’ve done it, it’s awesome)!
The best part about this glow oil is that it sprays right on! It’s surprisingly not greasy when you rub it in, and melts right into your skin while leaving a pretty little glow.
Just a brilliant product, a shadow that has SPF built in to protect those delicate eyelids (which I HAVE burnt before, and ouch). It comes in a bunch of shimmery colors, and a little goes a long way. Only tip is that you’ll want a makeup remover to take this off, as it has some serious staying power!
I’ve always been a big fan of lip balm with SPF, because, why yes, I’ve burnt my lips, too. I have fair skin and have burnt nearly my entire body at one point or another. As a kid, I shrugged it off, but as an adult, I take skin protection so seriously. The acai flavor is nice and light. A few online reviews were mixed, but I have no idea what they’re talking about. This is a clean product with none of the toxic ingredients other brands use, so my only guess is those reviewers weren’t used to acai? But when in doubt, they make a delicious mint flavor, too!
My holy grail of products. I have already burnt my scalp twice this year because I forgot to use it. The powder has a light tint (almost brown) so you need to make sure to really work it into your hairline, just like you would with a dry shampoo. But I would so much rather have tinted powder on my hairline than big dry skin flakes for the next week as my sunburnt scalp heals (ugh, the worst). This is my go-to for long days spent photographing outdoor weddings!
This is a bonus product because while it doesn’t fall in line with SPF protection, it can protect that beautiful mane of beachy hair you worked up from swimming in the ocean. I love keeping this in my beach bag and gently running it through tangles after my last swim…that way my hair can air dry without me having to fuss with it later, and I get that light wavy look that is a beach signature!
5 Body Care Products For Revitalizing Skin
After a day in the sun, I’m all about giving my skin some love with clean beauty products that also (and most importantly) hydrate my skin — from the inside out.
If you haven’t tried Necssaire products yet, I highly recommend them. They offer clean beauty products that are climate-neutral certified, and while they believe they have a ways to go with their footprint, they are upfront with their sustainability efforts! This is a gel-oil body wash that I love because of my dry skin. It’s especially soothing after drying out your skin under the sun or in the ocean all day!
This is one of those products that I’m not sure how we aren’t ALL using: a hyaluronic acid serum (yes, like we use on our face) plus loaded with vitamins to smooth over your body. Necessaire believes we should treat our entire bodies like we do our face, which I’m obsessed with. I’ve always suffered from extreme dry skin on my arms and legs (as in, it actually looks like alligator skin), and this serum has been life-changing.
Pair this with the serum and it’s honestly better than any body butter, cream or lotion that I have ever used. It’s so hydrating and feels amazing after a day in the sun!! If you want to up your game, use the entire body line, but grabbing the exfoliator and hand cream, too!
I’ve been a fan of Moon Juice products for a few years. They are loaded with adaptogens, vitamins and minerals to pump up your body with all of the good stuff (plus, they’re clean, cruelty-free, and walk you through their sustainability efforts on their website). I love throwing these in my smoothie and bringing it to the beach, but they work great in coffee and water, too (or the package even says on your ice cream, which makes me love them even more).
The perfect product to use after a long day at the beach, a weekend getaway, or in the middle (and end) of a full-blown vacation because it delivers a cooling sensation as it works (so nice for sunkissed skin). It’s the kind of mask you feel working while it’s on, and your skin just feels cleaner afterward. It’s packed full of probiotics from Kefir Complex to heal and nourish the skin! I’m a big Tula fan; pair with this cleanser for the ultimate refreshed face.
Just Enough Summer Makeup For Glowing Skin
A few summer beauty products set me up for that sun-kissed look — think glowing, dewy skin; perfect for drinks and dinner on the beach!
After a long day in the sun, tinted face oil is my favorite way to get quickly dolled up and go out for evening drinks and dinner! I’ve perfected a quick routine that’s awesome for vacation because it’s just a few quick steps (just these six products!). I’ve been obsessed with this tinted face oil for the warmer months when I don’t want a heavy foundation. This is very light, with surprisingly beautiful coverage. You apply it just as you would a serum or moisturizer!
I love a good glowing-dewy look, and this highlighter is incredible for summertime. You can use it all over your face or just the spots light would touch (top of cheekbones, nose, eyebrow bone, etc.,) — and a little goes a long way. I get compliments every time I wear this!
I’ve been using Becca for years because they’re just the best glow in the game; this is technically a highlighter, but I love the Topaz shade for a bronzer! Even if your summer is a bit more office-vibes and less tropical vacation, this gives you the same bronzed look as if you spent a week in Tulum. Yes, please!
Arguably far more important than whatever mascara you’re using — I never pack my makeup without lash primer! Make sure you find the sweet spot of letting the primer dry just enough so it gets tacky, but not so much that it hardens before you apply the mascara!
This mascara is volumizing and has a nice big brush that coats all your lashes with a few simple swipes. Grab the waterproof version if you want to have an extra killer look at the beach (perfect for sweating and swimming)!
Rounding out my beachy makeup look (this entire process takes five minutes or less, especially if you just apply it all with clean hands, which makes packing even lighter) is this wet lip oil gloss. It gives the PERFECT amount of color and feels good on! Bonus, Kosas is a clean brand!
If you have room in your luggage, throw this baby in (I’m almost out of my second bottle)! This sunless tanner provides an instant olive tan (even on my very fair skin) that is easy to apply. I don’t “lay out” to get tan like I used to, but I still love looking tan, so this is my secret! I apply it after my Necessaire serum and lotion for the ultimate hydrating beachy glow.
Pro tip? When you can, always grab travel sizes! Not only are they good for a weekend away or throwing things into your beach bag (easier with a baby when you need less things to carry, too), but it’s a fantastic way to try out a new product without committing to anything wild. Anything with SPF actually has an expiration date that many forget to check — always buy new ones each summer — and having smaller sizes makes for less waste (unless you know you’ll be needing a lot for the whole fam). On the flip side, I love having my favorite tried-and-true products in a smaller, more packable size to bring with me everywhere, whether on a plane, a long road trip, or just my local swim spot!
Here’s to a fantastic summer! Hope you found a few new products to help you stay protected, hydrated and glowing all season long!
Thank you, so much, Nordstrom & ShopStyle Collective for sponsoring this post! I’m such a fan of the Nordstrom beauty section and everything you can find there – literally all my favorites. It was an honor to get to talk about all my summertime essentials!!
