Finding A Modern, Epic Trench Coat

A trench coat has been one of my wardrobe must-haves for spring and also for European traveling. I relied heavily on my trench during my trip to Northern Italy last May and wore it pretty much everyday. So now that we are heading into warmer temperatures, I’ve been thinking more and more about trenches and decided to do a deep dive into the world of trench coats to find the best ones out there right now.

7 Epic Trenches I’m Loving Right Now

Now, before this search, I was of the mindset that this would be an easy task because a ‘trench coat is a trench coat”, right? Wrong. I was wrong. The trench coat “genre” has truly expanded over the years and is overflowing with different silhouettes and varying lengths, fits fabrics, colors and unique detailing. Luckily, I have this little thing called “ADHD’ and a tendency to hyper-fixate, so a deep dive into trench coats is right up my alley.

There are an overwhelming amount of different trenches out there, so for this post I wanted to really narrow it down to one of my favorite silhouettes right now: the drapey, longer-length take of the otherwise classic coat style. And as luck would have it, there are plenty of great options to choose from in all price ranges. So, let’s dive in to each of my top picks…

1. Favorite Daughter’s Tie Waist Trench Coat

This Favorite Daughter trench is one of my favorite silhouettes currently out there. I love the longer, mid-shin length and the drapey, oversized fit. At 47″ in length, it is much longer than a lot of other trenches I’ve been seeing. I also appreciate all the subtle extra details like belted cuffed sleeves, the double-breasted button closure and the epaulettes.

2. Good American Double-Breasted Trench Coat

Regular Sizes | Plus-Sizes

This Good American trench is the perfect classic-yet-stylish trench and it is also available in plus sizes on Good American’s website. It features a simple, yet timeless double-breasted trench design with adjustable cuffs. Plus it’s 97% cotton, 3% elastane which means it’s also super comfortable and has the perfect amount of stretch to it.

3. Burberry Kensington Double-Breasted Trench Coat

Burberry’s Kensington Double-Breasted trench is an unequivocal, timeless classic that you can’t go wrong with. There is a reason this trench coat is the mother of all trenches. Styled in a traditionally British way, with a storm vent on the back and shoulder epaulettes. It’s 100% cotton and of course, lined with Burberry’s signature check pattern.

4. Abercrombie’s Elevated Trench Coat

There are so many reasons to love Abercrombie’s top-rated Elevated Trench. It’s a newly updated, bestselling classic and features a 100% waterproof and windproof nylon shell. It also comes in black, dark grey and a gorgeous light cream color as well as petite, regular and tall sizes and the price is unbeatable.

5. J.Crew’s Double-Breasted Trench Coat

It’s no secret that J.Crew makes some of our TME team’s favorite coats, ever. Between their Double-Breasted Trench Coat and their Icon Trench Coat, it is really hard to choose a favorite. Laura is a big fan of the Icon Trench, which is a perfect option if you are looking for a shorter length trench coat. The double-breasted coat is longer in length and has a more oversized fit, which is the silhouette I am loving for Spring 2024. It also comes in the perfect green shade for Spring.

6. Mango’s Angela Belted Trench Coat

Mango is my go-to affordable brand for trenches. Their quality and chic stylings are unbeatable for the price. I wore my Mango trench extensively while traveling to Northern Italy last Spring. I love the minimalistic fits of this European brand, similar in quality and styling of another European brand favorite: Zara. I especially love the light cream khaki color of this Angela Trench, it’s lightweight and perfect for spring.

7. Gap’s Icon Trench Coat

Last but certainly not least on my list is Gap’s Icon Trench. No ‘best of’ trench coat list is complete without this aptly named Icon Trench. Fellow TME author, Amy is a big fan of this trench in particular and you can see five super cute ways she styles this wardrobe classic on the blog.

Until next time, xo,
