Since Birkenstocks are my go-to comfort shoes (pretty much any time of the year), I tried 22 fall styles (yes, 22!) and landed on five favorites that stood out as the best.
When it comes to my typical fall comfort shoe lineup, Birkenstock Buckleys and the Arizona Shearlings are always in the mix. This year, however, I found some fresh updates and brand-new styles as well that seriously caught my attention. Think modern rivets, luxe big buckles, and easier-to-find alternatives to the elusive Birkenstock Naples (the Fall 2025 “It” shoe).
People often ask: I love Birkenstock sandals for summer, but do Birkenstocks work for fall? The answer is yes, absolutely. Birkenstocks are perfect for fall. Between shearling-lined pairs and classic leather clogs, Birks are the fall shoes I keep by my door and slide on without thinking. And of course, that famous molded footbed makes my feet happy no matter the season.
So I went all in this fall, trying the full range of this season’s Birkenstocks: classic Boston clogs, Buckleys, Arizona fall transition sandals, the impossible-to-find Naples, plus Tokios, wedges, and the Lutry 365. I tried them in suede, nubuck, oiled leather, and shearling-lined versions… in various colorways but mostly sticking to those lighter fall neutrals that always work best in my wardrobe.
I’m super happy with the results, and honestly, narrowing it down to my top five was much harder than I expected. Fall Birkenstocks: The 5 Best Pairs Reviewed
Of the 22 pairs of fall Birkenstocks I tried, these 5 are my favorites. Two styles I’ve worn (and loved) previous years and three styles that are brand new (or at least brand new to me!).
1. Birkenstock Buckley Clog

MY TAKE: I’ve worn variations of the Birkenstock Buckley for years, and they’re still one of my most-worn fall Birkenstock styles. This classic clog is one of those pairs that will live in my closet forever.

PROS: Classic styling; similar look to the coveted Birkenstock Naples (especially in the oiled leather versions), but MUCH easier to find in stock; not as bulky as the Birkenstock Bostons; elastic on the inside upper allows for more give (compared to the leather Bostons) while walking; available in oiled leather, soft suede, or ultra cozy shearling-lined (I personally like the oiled leather this year for a crisper cleaner look as well as the shearling-lined); I have owned multiple pairs of the suede shearling-lined (they’re INCREDIBLY soft and cozy), but see note below.
CONS: Don’t love this style with thick socks (the portions seem off to me compared to the bulkier Bostons that can handle a bulkier thicker sock); if you choose the shearling-lined, the lining does thin with wear and develops worn patches (doesn’t bother me and I continue wearing, but good to know with purchase decision making); the oiled leather is gorgeous and elevated, but stiffer out of the box than the suede.

2. Birkenstock Boston Rivet Clog

MY TAKE: A modern and edgy-ish update to the beloved classic Birkenstock Bostons. I personally like the the taupe for my wardrobe, but the black ones are GORGEOUS and the rivets stand out even better on the black.

PROS: Edgy-ish update to the iconic Birkenstock Boston, soft suede on inner top of shoe if your feet are sensitive to harder leathers; taupe is neutral and easy to wear, the rivets give it more interest than the classic Birkenstock Bostons; plenty of room for socks with the wide toebed.
CONS: Rivets are so modern and stylish, but they don’t show up as much on the beige; black is gorgeous and the rivets pop, but the black feels too heavy of a look for my fall wardrobe.

3. Birkenstock Boston Big Buckle Clog

MY TAKE: No surprises here…I pretty much love ALLLLLLL the “Big Buckle” Birkenstocks. The big buckle detailing elevates the classic Birkenstock Boston with a chic and polished vibe — while still maintaining Birkenstock’s beloved comfort features. So good!

PROS: Elevated and chic take on the classic Birkenstock Boston clogs; the leather is REALLY pretty and helps create a more polished Birk look; same Birkenstock Boston clog feel, but with some interest and a sophisticated touch.
CONS: Leather is smooth and very pretty, but I assume it will get scuffed immediately (this doesn’t bother me, but for some I know it will); the upper on the leather version is stiffer than the suede versions if you’re sensitive to that; if you choose the shearling lined (which I’m considering) note that the shearling lining on all Birkenstocks wears down and creates thin/bare patches on the footbed (I personally don’t mind this, but something to consider).

4. Birkenstock Arizona Big Buckle Shearling Sandal

MY TAKE: I purchased this style last year, and I love them! The shearling on the Birkenstock Arizonas is just toasty enough to keep my feet warm on crisp fall days, but the sandal style makes sure my feet don’t get overheated and lets my toes wiggle. See note below about shearling.

PROS: A fantastic option for a cute fall transition sandal or a comfy, cozy, and supportive house shoe (I’ve worn this style for both purposes); the shearling lining is super soft and keeps my feet a perfect temperature on cool fall days (while showing off a cute fall pedicure!); my feet sometimes get overheated in full shearling shoes, so these are perfect temperature wise for fall (or winter around the house); comfortable and supportive (per usual with Birks); see note below about shearling.
CONS: The shearling lining (like I’ve experienced with all shearling-lined Birks) does thin with wear and after a while creates some bare patches in the lining (I don’t mind this, but good to know before making a purchase); people totally question me on the street when I’m wearing these in late fall, but they really do keep my feet plenty warm.

MY TAKE: Absolutely fun to wear the “It” Birkenstock for Fall 2025 (and I do like the style), but know that the Birkenstock Buckley is a SOLID alternative that is MUCH easier to find.

FIT: Not sure yet…. (sorry!) I’m wearing a 38 Wide here in the Naples (correct sizes are HARD to find!!!), and the wide sizing is too big for me (too wide and too long). Still waiting on the 38 Narrow to arrive and will report back in my upcoming Big Guide To Fall Birkenstocks.

PROS: Sleek and super luxe-looking, this style has been hyped a TON for fall 2025 (and now is close to impossible to find); the cognac is a really pretty colorway, and the wrapped leather design (no cork showing) is definitely very chic.
CONS: Unfortunately these are SO difficult to find right now… you can try the retailers I linked to and I will update on social if I see them restocked soon; they’re great but are they worth stalking or paying inflated prices??? In my opinion…no. Buckleys are a totally solid alternative.

The Naples may be wide and the Buckleys narrow? The euro sizing is all unisex so there are no men’s 38 vs women’s 38 🙂
Yes yes yes! Omg…it said 38 narrow on the order and on the site I ordered from, but you’re SO right! From looking at the open foot/close foot picture on the actual shoe that I’ve talked about a million times in posts… it IS wide! Okay…I will change the info above–thank you, Emily! Wonder why they label them “women’s” and “men’s”… I guess they just decide at a certain number the shoes change gender? Weird. Thank you, again!
