I was pretty excited to tackle this room. I love a good design challenge and with it being a room for both my daughter and son, I knew that I’d get the chance to get creative. It couldn’t be ALL princess (which would have been totally fine with Mads) and it couldn’t be just one monstrous dinosaur, much to Anthony’s chagrin.
How could I mix girly with boy-ish elements and have it all be fun, pretty and whimsical all at the same time?
While I would have loved doing an entire room over-haul with *new* everything, I had to reign myself in and go with just a few items that packed a punch and would give me the over-all look I was going for.
Well, six months later…
and I finally got it all together.
We had a good bit of this stuff already, so it all came down to pulling it from their separate rooms and getting a little creative. I sanded down my husband’s old bunk bed, painted the dresser a fresh color and switched out the brackets holding up the wall shelves to something more modern (they used to be a more girly style).
I did buy a few things, because the room needed a little oomph, to tie it all together and make it all more playful, fun and cohesive. After perusing Land of Nod for ideas and inspiration, I decided on new bed sets, statement-making wall decor (the animal busts) and a few adorable, cozy add-ons (the pouf, plush unicorns & dino throw pillow).

Woo! Yessss. I am really happy with the end result…and so are the kids. I’ve found that they spend more time up in their room now, playing quietly and contentedly (for the most part)! Weird.
I guess there’s something to be said about having a well-constructed space for creativity and play.
Now, if I could just get the rest of the house in order…
I have to shout-out to Land of Nod. They sent along a few of their items…and honestly, they really make the room. Thank you!
