Weekend 5.18

I am having a very busy weekend, Gang. I have a dog to walk, books to read, coffee to drink and apricot tarts to eat. I’m VERY busy.

If you are guessing that we are currently in-between kid sports at the moment…you are correct, Sir.

It. Is. GLORIOUS.

I’m sure the obligations will come zooming back all too soon, but all four of us are seriously enjoying our little reprieve. Do the kids really need to play tennis? Do they?

Let me ponder that while I send this IG reel to my friends (currently freezing at some kid baseball game) and eat this croissant.

Mmmmmm.

First things first: If you haven’t yet checked out the GAP X Doen collabrun. Doen is one of my all-time favorite brands (made in California, natural fabrics, vintage vibes – you can see more of their full collection at Saks to get an idea) and their GAP collab is so freaking good. Everything is selling out really quickly, but it looks like a re-stock is coming tonight (Sat).

Chic X 2. This breezy, 100% cotton sundress is on major sale at Nordstrom, and looks like something you’d only find in Europe. It’s the subtle details: the asymmetric hem, the sweetheart neckline, the subtle print – it’s a pretty one. Secondly, this silk slipdress is the anti-floral, and is especially perfect for anyone crushing hard on Zendaya’s wardrobe in Challengers.

Three cute tops on sale. I love pairing seriously gorgeous tops with cut-off denim, and I found 3 sale tops that really stand out: One, this Farm Rio stunner – it would pair just as well with light OR dark wash denim, this cool Eileen Fisher top that looks like silk but is really environmentally-friendly Tencel Lyocell, and this 100% cotton, vintage-inspired top (plus sizes only) that gets the shape exactly right – and shows off those collarbones!

A genius flip-flop upgrade. Havaianas released their ubiquitous flip-flop in a new square-toe shape and I can’t stop thinking about it. Looks seriously chic on, especially with baggy jeans. Also at Nordstrom.

REI is having their biggest sale of the year and we need to talk cool hiking boots. Happily, the REI sale includes several pairs of Danners – my favorite hiking boot brand (made in the US, too). If you like the retro classic look Danner is famous for, this pair is the most similar to mine, but also check out this pair or this one (same vibe, lighter weight). If you prefer a pretty, feminine pair of hiking boots (and why not??) check out these Sorels in ‘natural vintage pink’ or these Hokas in ‘blue glass/coastal shade’. Lastly, if there’s any snowsports lovers, Danner’s apres ski boots are really fun (it’s the sunburst for me).

Help, ‘kelp’? Cotopaxi is having a sale, and it includes this ridiculously lightweight, weather-resistant windbreaker that’s great for summer. I own it in bright colors, but I’m especially drawn to the newer, ‘after midnight’ colorway. There’s also a true rain anorak on sale, and the ‘maritime/sea glass’ is – gahhhh – GORG. Or the ‘kelp’!?

Strange, but in a good way. These Free People sweatpants have the strangest fit (they’re banded at the bottom, but inexplicably wide) and yet…I kinda love them. I’ve been wearing them rolled up at the cuffs, and it works. With the matching sweatshirt in ‘big sky’. Both pieces run big (size down one size – I have the XS).

I suspect nobody cares…but this faux-leather, puffy bomber jacket is so. flippin. cool. Worth snapping up (40% off!!) and putting away for fall. I especially like the ivory.

Ok, Target. Is it just me, or does this cute straw handbag look way more expensive than it is? Honestly, both the black/tan and the orange are calling my name. Love.

I’m having trouble with running shorts. Specifically: thigh chafing. I’ve always run in tiny little shorts (even my bike shorts are more like underwear haha), but lately, the chafing situation has been out of control. Has anyone tried this Megababe Thigh Rescue? Abby swears by it, and it seems wayyyy easier than, uh, finding new shorts. (Oh geez – it’s literally everywhere – Target, Amazon – with a ton of good reviews. Okfine. Ordered.)

I guess even I have a line. I mean…I’m thrilled that Alex Wang shares my love of denim underwear, but these are too far, even for me.

Jeni said so. Jeni, our resident fashion designer (she’s got both the skills and the degree), has been predicting the rise of capris for months now. We’ve all been, like, whatever Jeni but then I just came across these Ser.O.Ya capris. Interesting. Ser.O.Ya is basically Retrofete’s younger sister so….is that telling? Maybe. And then, exhibit B, these capris on Urban (another ‘younger sister’ kind of brand) are basically sold out. Hmmm. But then you guys….freaking Vince. And rag&bone. And I’m realizing that capris would look seriously cute with some of the major trending shoes (a pretty good indicator that a trend is about to explode). Think: Sambas, ballet flats, minimalist sandals – even those new, sexy Tevas would look great with capris. Since capris are still just emerging as a trend, there’s not a lot in the under $200 category (unless you count literal capri leggings), but Anthro’s Maeve has a pretty cute pair that also comes in tall and petite sizes. I suspect you’ll be hearing more from us on capris eventually, but I’ve gotta say: Jeni, you were right.

Should’ve known. I recently found out out what our video team has been doing with my dumber footage: Tiktok. Gahhh I’ve gotta stop with the finger guns.

Vegan Strawberry Shortcake. If you have a food processor (and you really should – I swear by mine), these Vegan Strawberry Shortcakes by Nora Cooks really do whip up bizarrely fast. I made them last Wednesday to great applause. I’m going to mess with the recipe a bit (I can’t help myself) and add in some vanilla, lemon rind aaaand…more salt? We’ll see.

Enjoy your weekend!

xo,

S
