An Updated Coastal-Inspired Outfit To Wear On Repeat

Every year when the summer season comes around I find myself reaching for coastal inspired outfits. The kind of outfits that make me feel like I could close my eyes and be sipping a spritz on the eastern seaboard.

For the past few years, that has generally meant that I’m reaching for white denim, but this year I’ve been craving something different. An outfit with that same easy, breezy attitude, kissed with tones of summer whites, but in a new way.

And then it hit me: I needed a white skirt. And Saks had just the piece I was dreaming of

A Long White Skirt & Graphic Tees: My New Coastal-Inspired Uniform For Summer

White denim will forever be a classic in my summer wardrobe, but as I draw more inspiration from feminine silhouettes than I ever have before, I’ve been looking to swap in skirts or dresses in areas I once had only reserved for pants.

Saks has just about every skirt of my dreams right now. I clicked between Staud’s Midi Skirt with that lovely accent of blue and this stunning eyelet version from Milly before landing on the Maia Linen Skirt from Reformation. No matter which one I added to my wardrobe, I knew I wanted it to have movement that echoed the laid back nature of warmer weather – but Reformation being one of my favorite brands is really what made my decision.

Reformations Maia skirt is made from 100% linen and includes an expertly crafted liner on the inside so there is zero problem of it being sheer. The double layer does make it a little bit heavier, but the bonus is that there’s also no worries of the wind taking control of it (something I very much need living along the ocean). I personally love how linen creates a natural crinkle with wear, giving off a laid-back, carefree spirit to my outfit, but if that lived-in look of linen bothers you, that would be a great reason to opt for a textured cotton skirt like this one.

There’s something so very ethereal feeling about a loose white skirt in the summertime that makes it incredibly fun to wear, and it has the “it piece” factor of being versatile for just about every summer activity. Whether you throw it on with your favorite go-to tee for a weekend uniform, dress it up with a blouse for a dinner party, or pull it on over your swimsuit on vacation, a white skirt is a surprising workhorse.

Like with any new wardrobe item, I love to put my own personal spin on styling it. For white denim that meant topping the outfit with an oversized button down. With a skirt? I’ve almost exclusively been wearing it with relaxed graphic tees (and sweatshirts, for those chilly coastal days).

I will first and foremost always prefer to be casual, even with an item that can be dressed up like a skirt or dress. I love skipping the heels and opting for an easy sandal. A strappy leather sandal such as this one is comfortable enough to run to the beach in but delicate enough to work for a special celebration.

While I normally love utilizing a strategic tuck when wearing an oversized tee, wearing the top hanging loose over the skirt is a very modern look that skews European It Girl (and it’s really comfortable when you learn to embrace it).

But when it’s cooler outside, a crewneck gives off the same easy look as a graphic tee.

MOTHER, in my opinion, makes some of the best graphic tops. Not only do they have really fun, modern designs, but they fit like a dream. This cotton crewneck sweatshirt is loose and drapey without swallowing me up, which makes for the perfect pairing to a summer skirt, and it’s ridiculously soft.

I reached for this sweatshirt three days in a row when I first got it in (you’ll understand when you try it on, I swear), it’s that deliciously soft and easy to wear… especially with that summer-perfect skirt ;).
