I Love Cuffed Jeans: Here’s 3 Shoes I Wear With Them

I’ve been really inspired by the cuffed jeans trend – especially wide-leg cuffed jeans. Anthropologie and Shopbop have some especially cool options, from brands like AGOLDE and Citizens of Humanity, as examples. However, I wasn’t sure if giant cuffs would actually work on my shorter self (I’m 5’4″ for reference). But, since it’s literally my job to test exactly this kind of thing out, I ordered a few pairs.

After trying on several pairs, I found two that cuff beautifully and fit great. The key was to find jeans that aren’t lightweight or drape-y, but instead have some structure (ie. non-stretch or mostly non-stretch denim). The two pairs of cuffed jeans I adore are:

  • Citizens of Humanity Ayla – higher rise, fitted in hips and butt, looser leg, slightly shorter inseam
  • AGOLDE Clara – lower rise (but not too low) looser through hips and butt, longer inseam

These two cuffed jeans can be found at a few retailers, in various colors. They’re so well-made, break in beautifully, yet won’t sag or stretch out too much with wear.

The 3 Pairs of Shoes I Wear The Most With Cuffed Jeans

Anytime I’m about to invest in a new style of jean, I try them on with multiple pairs of shoes (starting with my most-worn, favorite pairs) before making my decision. It really helps to see how they’d fit into my wardrobe and everyday looks. If any style of denim only works with one type of shoe, then I have to consider whether I’d actually wear them very often.

These cuffed jeans, however? After a bit of trying on, I found that they look really amazing with both flats and heels. Score!

1. Try Cuffed Jeans With…Flat, Tan Sandals (or Slides)

The Sandals/Slides: While any flat, tan sandal would do, Everlane Day Crossover sandals are some of my favorites that cover the problem areas of my feet, but still look cute. They’re so soft and such a great shoe. I’ve had these for years and want more colors. TTS and they look great with this style jean. They’re so flat and easy to pack for trips, too!

The Jeans: Here I’m wearing the Citizens of Humanity Alya baggy cuffed jeans. I was prepping for a trip to Palm Springs and I’m willing the warmer temps in Portland with this outfit. I did wind up ironing the cuffs on these for my trip and they looked even sharper and better. These jeans were comfy to wear all day when we visited Yucca Valley to see my friend’s new store out there. So I’ve tested them out!

2. Try Cuffed Jeans With…Pointed-Toe Heels

The Heels: I love the kitten heel I’m wearing here, but have also worn cuffed jeans with a slightly higher heel and they look great. While I think high-heel sandals of almost any kind would work with cuffed jeans, for a closed toe heel, I prefer a pointed toe. It adds some contrast to the big cuff and is just so chic.

The Jeans: These grey Citizens of Humanity Ayla were the first cuffed pair I tried. They’re so cool and the color is perfection. I liked them longer for this outfit, but they do hang a little better cuffed twice. That’s a real bonus about this style jean – you can adjust the cuff to your height or shoe needs. Cuffed jeans end up being a great jean to travel with because of that hem flexibility. And both of these pairs, like I mentioned above, don’t get baggy or need washing with every wear. Also a travel bonus. True to size on these CoH with a bit of room for a slouchy vibe.

3. Try Cuffed Jeans With…Low Profile Sneakers

The Shoes: A low profile shoe doesn’t compete with a big cuff, and really lets the cuff drape. Ballet flats would work here, but I’m not a big fan of ballet flats. Instead…low profile sneakers. Adidas Sambas would be a great choice, but I prefer my Adidas VL Court 3.0 sneakers (featured in the pics) because they have a slightly thicker sole than the Sambas. They’re truly comfy, but have a very similar look. I recently got these Adidas Nora sneakers, too, and they’re fab! Another great Samba dupe with more support.

The Jeans: So, I guess I love low rise jeans again. These. Are great. They’re the AGOLDE Clara Wide Leg jean. They fit so well. They actually aren’t super low rise, but they hit right below my belly button. They’ve reminded me that on my frame lower rise (mid-rise I guess honestly) are a great fit for me.

A Few More Cuffed Jean Options…

But here are some other options for cuffed jeans I’m loving, at various price points, some with stretch and some without. I chose mostly jeans that are shown cuffed here since I haven’t tried them on myself.

I’m having the hardest time deciding which pair is truly my favorite. They’re both really good. And I’m loving some of the other options in the widget above, too!

Let me know if you’ve tried a pair you love. I’m so glad there are now more and more options available for this cute style. Hooray for finding a wearable new jeans style!
