What Are ‘Straight Leg Jeans’?

True straight leg jeans can be any rise and maintain a straight silhouette all the way down the leg. They’re a little snug in the thigh, but don’t taper at the bottom, which means a more classic and comfy fit compared to everyone’s favorite, skinny jeans. Over the years, however, straight leg denim has morphed with the changing trends. The low-rise silhouettes of the ’90s have now creeped up to just-under-the-ribcage proportions, and with the changing rises (and hemlines) the humble straight leg jean has gone by many different names. The straight leg (and straight-ish leg) jean category now includes:

Mom Jeans: High rise, slightly tapered & cropped straight leg.
Girlfriend Jeans: High rise, slim & cropped straight leg.
Boyfriend Jeans: Low rise, loose & cropped straight leg.
Dad Jeans: High rise, loose straight leg.
— True straight leg jeans with a low, mid, or high rise.

While the rises and hemlines differ, the one thing all of these jean types do have in common is this: they’re all a bit tricky to style (especially with boots).

Tips For Styling Straight Leg Jeans

Tip 1: Try Heeled Booties

Whether it’s with a cropped hem or a hem to the floor, heeled booties always work with straight leg jeans. Scotti paired her white jeans with some gorgeous camel booties...leg-lengthening and chic.

Tip 2: Cuff ’em!

For trickier boot styles (high-shaft chelsea boots, hiking boots, combat, etc) try cuffing your jeans for a different look that works!

I love an oversized blazer too, but a cropped blazer is so stylish & chic.

Tip 3: Show the Curves

Tuck your top OR add a cropped jacket/blazer to show off your waist like Laura. Make it even more lengthening with heels.

Tip 4: Dress Them Down

Straight leg jeans have a roomier fit for all the comfort. Slightly tuck your fav graphic tee and put on your best walkin’ sneaks like Amy.

Tip 5: Add Something Oversized

Play with the relaxed fit of your straight leg jeans with an equally relaxed, oversized blazer like Laura. The key: show the waist with a tucked tee.

Tip 6: Make It A 'Lil Fancy

A fun bag, soft sweater and some heels — Shana's date night ready. Accessories and a pretty sweater or top can help make baggier jean styles a little fancy.
