There’s a pair of jeans that I’ve been casually seeing online for the past six months or so. We flirt a bit. The chewed hemline whispers my name, I add my size to cart. I don’t ever quite bring them back to my place, but I do think about them, often.
High Rise. Wide Leg. Chewed Hem. These DL1961 Hepburn Jeans Are IT.
Turns out they’re even better in real life!
The Hepburn High Rise Wide Leg Jeans from DL1961 are perfectly retro-chic.
They have a high rise and a wide leg, and are on the softer side of rigid denim. The jeans have an inseam of only about 26”, which is the main reason it took me so long to try these. I wasn’t convinced such a short inseam could work on my long legs, but when Shopbop listed their model wearing them as 5’10”, a little bit of hope glimmered in my soul.
When I first tried on the DL1961 Hepburn High Rise Wide Leg Jeans, I was immediately into them. They were different from anything else I had in my closet, and the size I ordered was spot-on (I hadn’t been successful with that lately).
My natural response is to jump to immediate conclusions with first try-on impressions. However, that can sometimes come back to bite me in the butt. While I’m normally a big proponent of gut instincts, I wanted to have a more educated opinion with the Hepburn Wide Leg, especially since DL1961 is a new-to-me brand and the price tag is higher.
Fit Notes: I’m 5’9″ with a straight frame (no booty/hips) and usually in between sizes 28 and 29 in denim. I find it helpful to look at the specific sizing descriptions of each brand, since they can differ so greatly (as Meredith always points out, sizing makes no sense). While a 28 in some brands is considered about a size 6, it can be a range of 4-6 in others (which is the case for this pair). I’m definitely not a 4. I’m actually more of a true size 8 overall, so that’s how I knew I needed to choose the 29 (6-8) — and they’re perfect! If you’re in-between sizes like me, consider going up.
Styling The DL1961 Hepburn High-Rise Wide-Leg Jeans
I went full-on Shana and tried on a bunch of my favorite shoes and tops with these jeans, even throwing in various bags I carry and, to keep it personal to my unique style, a wide-brimmed hat. This is totally a benefit to ordering online vs shopping in store.
While I’m not someone who has outfit “formulas” (I’m more of what I like to call an emotional dresser), it did really help to just grab a bunch of my most-worn, favorite pieces and see how they looked with these Hepburn Wide Legs.
Outfit 1 | Jeans + An Oversized Blazer + Heeled Boots
This blazer has been one of my most favorite pieces in my wardrobe (and clearly everyone else’s too because the dang thing is sold out…but you can sign up for restock notifications). I grabbed my heeled boots at the same time, and when I had them all on it was very clear: these jeans were made for heeled boots.
I mean, just look at it. Something about that 26″ inseam and chewed hem causing the boots to peek out is amazing.
I grabbed a few quick accessories to make the outfit a little more date-night ready.
I was so in love with this look, it was the first time I had ever regretted not owning more heels. While I wear these boots year-round, I couldn’t help but think the jeans would look so good with a heeled sandal.
I’ve been eyeing up every version of the flip-flop heel, so while I was still standing in front of the mirror wearing this exact outfit, I pulled out my phone and ordered this pair (decided to go budget-friendly in case I end up hating them).
Outfit 2 | Jeans + A Go-To Sweatshirt & Heeled Boots
I switched up the tops for a more casual, worn-in sweatshirt. The wide-leg + boot combo was still shining so bright, I was almost convinced that I could wear a plastic bag as a top and still look good (don’t worry, I didn’t try that on).
You can tell how much I love something by the way I take selfies. The bigger the pose I’m striking, the more I’m feeling it. That extra hip bump, back-bend sassy pose down below? Yeah, I loved how I was feeling in these jeans.
The Insta-worthy sass was coming out in full swing.
Outfit 3 | Jeans + A Linen Button-Up & Slides
I know that weather is (eventually) going to heat up, so I grabbed some summer pieces next.
This linen top from Gap is a perfect summer staple. I sized up to a large for something a little more loose and breezy, and loved it so much I bought a second color.
Puffy slides are everywhere this year, and the moment I slipped my foot into a pair I understood why. This specific pair is incredibly soft and cushiony, as if you’re walking on a cloud. They’ve been selling out like mad, but sign up for stock notifications if your size is out (they do a good job with restocks)!
I kept the same summery outfit vibe, but swapped the shoes for my favorite clogs (the big buckle is currently hard to come by, but this is another cute Birkenstock option) and tied up my shirt. This look is both beach-ready and perfect for a weekend farmers’ market stroll!
Outfit 4 | DL1961 Jeans + A Casual Tee & Sneakers
I had fully established by this point that the jeans really shine with heeled boots. Could they also work with my current quick-grab mom outfit? A comfy tee, a brightly colored belt bag, and sneakers are three things I’m grabbing when I have no time to think about an outfit whatsoever.
Yep, the jeans were rocking this one, too.
They actually seemed to enhance the look, acting as a statement piece in an otherwise very basic outfit.
Ope, there’s that selfie flare. Let’s just say I am over the moon about this denim purchase. Please do yourself a favor and try these!
