I’m slowly getting used to this whole non-skinny jeans thing…and I do mean slowly. After years of wearing skinny jeans, it’s hard to get used to the different proportions. I mean, I remember that whole SNL Mom Jeans skit like it was yesterday–gah! Like I said, I’m working on it.

But you know what I can 100% get on board with, like right-this-very-minute?? High-rise flares. Now those I’ve been happily rocking since my high school days and I. Am. Here for their revival. (I mean, did they ever really leave?)

What To Wear With American Eagle Super High-Waisted Flare Jeans

High-rise flares just make sense to me: a wider hem to balance out hips, a high-rise to accentuate curves, a leg-lengthening fit…I mean, I’ll rock these over mom jeans any day. So when I tried on American Eagle’s super high-waisted flares in that super soft denim of theirs that stretches to fit without stretching out, I was sold. They’re on sale for under $45 right now, but truth be told I would totally pay the full $60 (and then some) for these jeans. With three different washes, sizes 000-24 and FIVE lengths per size, these are the jeans you need. Trust me. And if you’re not sure, here are 15 ways to wear them…who needs mom jeans??

1. Flares + A Basic T-shirt

This is actually a bodysuit–I love not having to worry about tucking it in or half-tucking perfectly. A t-shirt would be just as good, but I like that you can see the waistband with a bodysuit like this. (And Abercrombie bodysuits are super-comfy without leaving vpl!)

2. Flares + A Cute Cami & Heels

Add a lacy cami (this is another bodysuit–just makes tucking easier) and some heels and you’re good to go. Throw on a cardigan, sweater, blazer or denim jacket if it’s cold.

3. Flares + A Pretty Blouse

I love the retro vibe of this bodysuit from Abercrombie…the hook-and-eye closure can be left open for a deeper plunge and the tie can be knotted or tied as you like.

4. Flares + A Cardigan As A Shirt

I’ve loved cardigans FOR EVER now and wearing them alone (or with a cami underneath) as a shirt is a fun way to style them. I half-tuck or tie this one up to show off the waist.

6. Flares + An Off-the-Shoulder Blouse

I’m obsessed with this blouse and bought these ridiculously comfy pants to complete the matching set–but it looks just as good with these flares. (But seriously, the matching set is a must-have for summer!)

7. Flares + A Moto Jacket

Always a moto jacket. I’d also wear it with a faux leather moto, but I love the green color of this jacket I got from Abercrombie last year. Hopefully they’ll restock it soon, but this one is similar in the meantime.

8. Flares + A Silky Top

This top has been sitting in my closet forever…it’s a little too cropped for my comfort, but with these high-rise jeans it might be ok. I like the vibe of this similar top, though, that could be half-tucked or knotted without showing any belly.

Bonus: Flares + a Sweatshirt & Comfy Birks

Because, I mean, let’s not pretend that this isn’t the way I’m wearing them most of the time right now at home…comfy, stretchy, and better than pjs, right?

  1. I have been wondering if flares / boot cut are acceptable now… We’re supposed to just ditch the skinny, everything else is ok? I mean, wear whatever the heck you want, but if we want to appease the Style Gods… I still have some of my flares that I suspected might make a comeback one day πŸ™‚

    • I’m totally with you on “wear whatever the heck you want” but also caring about the “Style Gods.” Flares just make more sense to me.

  2. Great post! Always enjoy reading your articles-you have an enthusiastic sense of style that is fun πŸ™‚ Personally, I struggle with flared jeans (way to much excess material near my ankles… can’t stand having it dragging or touching the ground…and it seems like I feel- I don’t know- a little disheveled if I don’t wear heels with them?? I feel the same way in boyfriend jeans too but that’s totally just me… You pull it off beautifully and look really cute in these jeans!). Not a fan of mom jeans either… and over feeling suffocated in skinny jeans too… is there any other style out there for me? Maybe I’m just destined for joggers forever at this point πŸ™‚ But you put a lot of effort and time into putting these ensembles together and you look great! Nice work!

    • Thank you for this!! Have you tried the cigarette-style of jean? They’re like skinnies but straight down…so they aren’t tight around the ankles. I love my AG ones: https://shopstyle.it/l/bsJfN (Also, THANK YOU so much for appreciating the effort!) ❀️

  3. We can already ditch the mom jeans? YES!!! (pumps fist in the air) I mean, I haven’t bought them because that trend seemed to come and go during quarantine, but I am excited to see bootcut jeans and flares having another moment. I knew I held onto my seven for all mankind flares for a reason. I actually wore them to an event last January and got so many compliments. Now I just have to wait until I can go somewhere again to break them out.

You look great, btw. Rock those jeans.

  4. I love these with the bodysuit! I’m really confused about inseams, though. Which did you pick? I see the options listed in the drop-down menu, but I’m missing wherever the explanation of how “extra short,” “short,” or “regular” would translate. The size chart and product info both lack that information, so I’m at a loss about how to choose . . .

    • Ok, it’s hard to find on their site, but I think the inseams from extra short to extra long is 28″, 30″, 32″, 34″, 36″ – I went with the regular so this chart seems accurate. 32 is just a bit long on me but perfect with heels…so that’s why they’re a little baggier with Birks! Hope this helps!

  5. Five lengths! Amazing. I’m about to buy some AE jeans solely to support their willingness to make different length jeans. Also I am so glad to see flares coming back. I am totally on board with this.

    • It’s so hard…I just went with the regular length (32″) because they work with shorter heels and sneakers…I probably couldn’t wear completely flat shoes but sneakers and Birks have a bit of a thicker sole so they worked!

  6. Yes! Thank you so much! I teach research skills to college freshmen for a job, so it’s a bit disconcerting not to be able to figure out inseams. Hah!
