Emily’s Memorial Day Sale Picks: Transitional Pieces + Pretty Prints

Hi guys, I know I’ve already shared some of my favorite sale finds in our team guide to the Memorial Day Weekend Sales here, but these few pieces that I found after the fact are so good, I couldn’t not share them. We don’t have a true blue summer here in Half Moon Bay, so I love that these clothes transition into other seasons, as well, to maximize their wear. I could see wearing that lightweight ivory sweater with the dark pink stripe with a pair of chambray culottes now and wide-legs later, and the animal print open cardigan would be such a fun, easy piece to throw on for an after-dinner bike ride around the neighborhood. (Lana just learned how to ride a two-wheeler, and this is one of our favorite new traditions!). And That. Backpack. You. Guys!!! Love the functionality of this piece (i.e. for toting ALL THE SNACKS), but it’s still highly fashionable and doesn’t scream diaper bag — for the record, it’s not — and at such a good price for the quality. Scroll down for more details on all my faves!

My Casual-Chic Memorial Day Sale Picks

The Memorial Day weekend sales are SO good. We're using the discount to stock up on casual-chic outfit accents & upgrades — find our favs here!

1 // Leopard Cardigan —  I am so into open front cardigans at the moment. I just love how drapey they are and how they create a long, lean line without hugging your hips. This one has almost a sweater coat kinda feel, which make it just a little edgier. I’d throw this on over just about anything for a cooler evening walk or bike ride around the block.

2 // Wide-leg Overall Under $50! I had engineer stripe overalls as a kiddo, so these are nostalgic in the best kind of way (and so much more flattering with a cropped length and wide leg). I’d put a muscle tank under this to keep it from looking too childlike.

3 // Hunter Classic Rain Boot I know, a rain boot in the summer — d’oh! — but we have kind of a damp summer here, and there have already been a handful of mornings where I’ve found myself dodging mud puddles in clogs in the preschool parking lot. The whole Hunter site is discounted this weekend, but I love the classic red color, and at just over $100, they’re a fair bit cheaper than retail price.

4 // Floral Dress This dress was so good I put it in my Memorial Day Weekend team picks, too, but I figured it was worth calling out a second time (same with the leopard sweater, above!). I love flirty dresses purely because you can take the frilly edge off of them with sneakers or a platform sandal and an oversized denim jacket. This one walks the line between retro and music festival with a print that has a high-end, almost Gucci-esque vibe.

5 // Striped Blouse I don’t know if I could personally pull off the semi-cropped length of this, but with a high enough waist, it could be the perfect summery topper for a pair of flared jeans. The neckline, the sleeves, the tortoiseshell buttons…it’s all so good — and only $24!

6 // Leopard SkirtSatiny skirt + graphic tee — what year is it?! The “alternative” high-schooler in me is highly into this skirt. Would it be taking it too far to wear it with Docs and a vintage beaded cardigan? I hope not.

7 // Leather Backpack — Anything that chicly doubles as a diaper bag (or whatever you call the bag that you’re still hauling around for your kid’s stuff even when they’re not in diapers) gets my vote, and this is a piece that will stand the test of time in both style and quality.

8 // Striped Leather SandalsI love that Tommy Hilfiger is making (has already made?) a comeback. These are preppy without being too cheesy, just boho enough to have caught my eye immediately, and the ideal mate for a pair of brightly colored twill shorts. 30% off!

9 // Chambray ShirtNot much to say here. Just a classically styled piece at a great price. I probably don’t need another one in my wardrobe, but for $30ish, maybe I do…

10 // High-Waisted Wide-LegsExtra 40% off! I’m still struggling a little with full-length, wide-legs ONLY because they look so awesome with platforms or some other kind of high, chunky sandal, and that’s just not practical enough for my everyday. (Though I did just get these Sibecca platform huaraches and they’ve been surprisingly comfy for daily wear.) That said, on the days when heels are an option, these are the perfect pant. Love the dark wash and the swishy weight of the fabric, which could be easily dressed up or down.

11 // Striped Knit Pullover — I have an older sweater super-similar to this, and I’m tempted to wear it every day, all year long. I really like a nubby, open knit and a well-placed stripe, so this is pretty much the Unicorn of Sweaters in my book.

BONUS Pick #1 // Aerie Undies All of Aerie’s undies are 10/$35 this weekend, which is about as cheap as they come. All my very favorite undies are from Aerie (and not just because they call them undies and not panties!). The super-soft, super-seamless ones here probably get the most wear, but the high-waisted lace brief fits like a surprisingly sexy granny panty and is almost all I wear under dresses and jumpsuits.

BONUS Pick #2 // Blue Striped Area Rug I know this is so random, but zis rug is so good! It has a super-similar vibe to the Serena & Lily rug that I’ve been eyeing for more than a year (which also happens to be on sale for 20% off, if you’re looking for more of an investment piece), but for 1/10 of the cost. (That’s 90% less for everyone who learned fractions at the sale rounders, like I did.) Seriously, I want to order one for me and all my friends.

  1. Hi! Nice to meet you! I HATE the word “panties” so I guess we’re good friends now. 😅(I also think “underpants” is an hilarious word.)

Hi Ali! We’re basically besties, lol. (Seriously, why do ppl insist on calling them that!?) And “underpants” is great. I love the visual of full-blown long johns under ALL THE THINGS.
