Fall Must-Have Combo: Sporty + Plaid (And I found Boots Similar To My Marc Jacobs, FYI)

Remember The Mom Edit’s Fall Edit?  Four of the must-have pieces for Fall were an athletic-inspired top (I’m partial to varsity stripes), a plaid scarf, interesting denim, and short boots.

I like ’em worn allllll together.

scarf: old Madewell, but Madewell’s current scarf is almost identical

sweatshirt: Wildfox Sporty Schoolgirl Raglan (size small)

jeans: old Rag and Bone – but the Rag and Bone Stretch Skinnies in Crochet Lace are similar

To Recreate:

Taren left a comment recently saying that she missed the some of the old format posts – the ones where I focus on a specific look, and then offer several ways to re-create it at various price points.  And I know the fancy shopping widgets have been problematic at times…..so…I’m going old-school with this one.

1.  Black and White Always Works

Topshop Check Knit Scarf (men’s dept)

J.Crew Collection Cashmere Sweater in Varsity Stripe, (25% off with code SOSWEET)

Rag and Bone Stretch Skinnies in Crochet Lace

Marc Jacobs Booties  (these were 20% off over the weekend…)

2. For Nursing Mamas

Gap Exploded Plaid Scarf

Free People Game Time Linen Henley

Paige Jimmy Jimmy Skinny Jeans with patches

Bunk Hiker Boot

3.  Preppy sweater + Destroyed Denim = #nailedit (this would work for mamas with curves – just make sure the sweater is fitted).

Toto Plaid Scarf

J.Crew Factory V-Neck Sweater in Varsity Stripe

Blank Denim Distressed Boyfriend Jeans

DV by Dolce Vita Analee Boots

4.  Bright and cheery – the side-zip is fabulous (keep it unzipped a little to skim over larger hips)

J.Crew Men’s Cashmere Scarf

J.Crew Side-Zip Sweatshirt

Current/Elliott Stiletto Skinny Jeans

Sam Edelman Reece Bootie

5. A Softer version of  Moto

Gap Cozy Plaid Scarf

J.Crew Cashmere Featherweight Tee in Varsity Stripe

LOFT Moto Jeans in Smash Blue

Dolce Vita Kinley Leather Boot, (similar to those cut-out Balenciaga boots I’ve been craving…and on sale for $119)

And then for those of you who like the shopping widgets….

  1. I have the PERFECT plaid scarf for this – a mixed plaid cozy scarf from last winter at Gap – and some reasonably interesting denim. Now to find the rest!

    …stupid sexy Marc Jacobs.

    • Drat, I just realized I have a very cool sporty sweatshirt I could wear, but it’s maroon and gold (go Gophers!) and my scarf is blue and red and white, and I am unsure about that color combination.

Question about the Wildfox sweater you’re wearing – would you say it’s TTS? I’m a 12-14, which would seem to indicate that the L would work for me, but I am also bosomly endowed (36F) and that tends to really throw off the fit of stuff that is supposed to be “drapey” or “oversized.”

    • Tina, are you talking about these? http://rstyle.me/~2KBte I keep staring at them. I’m not totally opposed…but….you said it best: love or miss the marc? I love the heel and the back quilting, but the front…ruching? Hunh. I’m leaning to no, simply because they are also $180….at $100 I’d be more inclined to say ok…..anyone else want to weigh in?

    • If I were going to get something similar to the Marc Jacobs..I think the best replacement would be the Dolce Vita…The Clarks don’t quite cut it…looking like a quilted cowboy cross breed..

  2. I looooooooove this look. Love. LOVE. Including the lipstick – tell us the color, pleeeeease?

I don’t quite love the Clarks boots (definitely the ruching that’s throwing me off) but what I do love about them is that angle at the top of the shaft. For those of us with shorter legs I think that little extra leg is super flattering and so hard to find.

  3. Love the old style layout! 🙂 I’m sure it’s more work to put the collage together and list everything out like that but I really enjoy reading it in that format (and it plays nicely with Feedly 🙂 Thank you!

  4. Thank YOU, Shana! Your blog is inspiring. As a working mom, maybe I’m old, but I don’t do so much insta or twitter. But I love your blog. Your post on pink out was so authentic and encouraging — strong work and Congrats on being cancer free!

  5. I’m actually wearing my varsity stripe sweatshirt today with a scarf (Abercrombie), but with my skinny joggers (Target) and slip on flats. All pieces inspired by your blog. 🙂

  6. As always, LOVE this and everything about your blog! I’m still searching for a pair of interesting denim on the cheap, and not so low-rise that I can’t play with my toddlers. If you have a second, I’d love your opinion on these from American Eagle – http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product_details.jsp?productId=0433_8976_001&catId=cat7010083&bundleCatId=cat7060096 – I can’t tell if they’re interesting or “too much” going on, but the price point (and higher rise) is right up my alley. And if any of your awesome readers have thoughts or have seen this in person, I’m all ears! You ROCK!!!!

  7. Late to this post as life has me behind so catching up on things here- love the MJ boots tho support for severe back pain concerns me almost as much as price for any shoe. Found this one by accident catching up on one of my fav comfy shoe blogs – barkingdogshoes. Here’s the link and curious what you think of the styling http://www.barkingdogshoes.com/images/2014/10/clarks-movie-retro-3.jpg
Similar with that great quilting tho I adore the MJ soles so much. Btw this entire outfit WILL become this stay home mom’s fall uniform As always love your blog posts and ur lovely I spring spirit and all the great people who post here too Empowering, positive community spirit abounds at the mom edit!
