Five Fun Ways To Style A Chambray Shirt Now

I woke up one day and decided I finally had enough of dealing with the ever growing piles of cheap junk clothing I’ve accumulated from years of chronic impulse buying.

So, I made it one of my goals this year to work on becoming a more conscientious buyer; to be more thoughtful and deliberate with my clothing purchases. This is no easy task for me, I’ve always been more of an act now, suffer the consequences later kind of a person, but acknowledging that I have a problem is the first step to overcoming right?

Quality over quantity is my new motto. I am going to work really hard at simplifying and buying only the essentials: quality clothing items that are versatile, durable and timeless.

Which brings me to my new chambray denim blouse, the 1969 Chambray Western Shirt by Gap, $59.92. I never realized the true potential of this unassuming top. There are soooo many different ways to style it. Seriously, just go onto Pinterest and search ‘How to style a chambray top’ and there are literally hundreds of outfit ideas. Here are my five favorites – outfit combos that hit the right note of ease and modernity:

1. Lace Skirt & Knee High Boots

top – you guessed it, 1969 Chambray Western shirt from Gap, $59.95

skirt – Bloomingdales Lace Pencil Skirt, $109.50.

hosiery –  Spanx Bodyshaping Tight-End Tights in charcoal, $20.00.

boots – DV by Dolce Vita Myste Riding Boots on Amazon & currently 69% off at $49.50.  A great way to make tall boots feel fresh.

2. Denim on Denim

top – 1969 Chambray Western Shirt  from Gap, $59.92. I remember buying this exact shirt in 6th grade, so that’s enough to qualify it as a “timeless” piece, right?

jeans – Factory Daisy Wash Flare Jeans from Factory J. Crew, $49.50. I’ve extolled the love I have for these jeans in my post about flares.

boots – I can’t find the boots I’m wearing with this outfit anywhere online but Madewell’s Aimee Ankle Boot comes the closest to the ones I have. They are currently on sale right now for $99.95 but the last time I looked they only had size 8, 9 and 11 left. Another very similar pair but with a slightly shorter heel are Topshop’s Beckley Ring Strap Bootie  available at Nordstrom’s for $70.00.

lipstick – I’m adding my new Smashbox ‘Be Legendery’ Matte Lipstick, $21.00  to the list too, because I just bought it yesterday and I’m in love.

3. Under a Shift Dress (Suede, For Bonus Points)

shirt – The  1969 Chambray Western Shirt  from Gap.

dress – I really love this Genuine Suede Shift Dress I got from Forever 21 for $59.50. It is pretty short, but the quality is excellent and I LOVE the pockets.  The suede modernizes the look.

tights – Spanx Bodyshaping Tight-End Tights in charcoal (my forever BFF), $20.00 on Amazon.

boots – I can’t find the boots I’m wearing with this outfit anywhere online but Madewell’s Aimee Ankle Boot comes the closest to the ones I have. They are currently on sale right now for $99.95 but the last time I looked they only had size 8, 9 and 11 left. 4. Graphic tee & Converse Hi Tops

shirt – surprise, surprise it’s the 1969 Chambray Western shirt from Gap.

t-shirt – I bought this t-shirt a few years ago but I love this ‘Because Coffee’ Graphic Tee from Nordstroms, for $17.98. Because truth.

pants – These Simply Vera Vera Wang Skinny Scuba Pants at Kohls for $27.99 (down from $44.99) are a few steps up from regular leggings. A perfect mix of stretch and spanx. The fabric is nice and thick so I don’t have to worry about any unsightly dimples or jiggling.

shoes – Chuck Taylor High Top Sneakers, available at Nordstrom for $54.00  White sneakers are a must this Spring.

5. Shorts, Tights & Ankle Booties

top – let’s hear it for the star of the post,  1969 Chambray Western shirt from Gap.

shorts – I bought these Sam Edelman striped shorts last year on sale at Nordstrom’s Rack but they are no where to be found online for purchase but I found a couple of comparable ones. Like these Ernie Striped shorts by Alice + Olivia, available on ShopBop for $165.00 and these Free People Striped Ponte Hi-Rise Clean Shorts, a slightly more affordable pleated option, only $27.99 on 6pm.

tights –  Also a hand for the hardest working clothing item I own, Spanx Bodyshaping Tight-End Tights in charcoal, $20.00.

booties – Dolce Vita Women’s Jaeger boot, $160.00 available on Amazon.

And that’s a wrap. Hopefully this gave you guys some new ideas for styling your chambray top. What’s your ‘go to’ Chambray shirt outfit?

Cheers to warmer weather and an early spring! xx, Jess

  1. Thank you for this! I was wearing mine today with pretty much my go-to outfit, half tucked in black denim with ankle booties, and thought about how I needed to change it up a bit.

  2. Thanks for this! I purchased a chambray from j crew a couple of years ago after the exact same thought process. It hasn’t gotten enough love, so this is perfects!

    • Wanted it add, I’ve found that it’s hard to stick with the “less is more,” “quality over quantity” thing, especially at affordable prices. I would love to see more like this. Maybe a timeless capsule series 🙂

      • yessss! I totally agree with you, I’m already finding it a struggle and I just started…and I love that idea for a timeless capsule series

      • Ashley, fwiw, I made a master list- all of the pieces I want in an ideal wardrobe, including what I have, don’t yet have or have but need to replace. Then if my head gets turned by a bargain I look at the list and see whether the piece checks a box on it, makes the list appreciably better in some way, or is just a distraction. Can’t tell you how many virtual carts I’ve cleared with that approach!

        • Maggie, I love this master list idea! I need to do this. But I seriously can’t figure out what my ideal wardrobe would even include. What’s on your list? Super curious.

          • It’s really worked for me, Christa. To keep this at least somewhat short, my list includes: a few each sleeveless, short and long sleeve tees. A couple of cotton and one flannel button down. A silk blouse. An LBD. Pair of season-less trousers and a pencil skirt. A couple of winter dresses and a couple of summer dresses. A few pair of jeans in various washes/styles. Vegan leather skinnies. A blazer or two and a nice mix of outerwear- denim, wool, down, military and leather. And a few essential sweaters – slim turtleneck, cashmere crew/v and a chunky/cozy one or two. Rounded out with a good mix of shoes, my list is around 50 pieces to carry me through four seasons of work and play. Hope that helps!!

  3. Love all these ideas! I have a chambray shirt that I don’t wear enough because it is always so darn wrinkly. You are making a good case for pulling out my iron. 🙂

    • ugh yes! It is in constant need of ironing, I feel like I should buy a wrinkle spray or something and just carry it in my bag when I’m wearing it.

    • I have a travel steamer that I use and it’s soooooo much easier than ironing! It’s not perfect, but it gets out the major wrinkles.

  4. Great post! I especially like the first outfits with the mix of lace and chambray. =) I tend to mix mine with colored skinny jeans, but I’ve been meaning to try it with a high-waisted skirt too.

  5. Thank you so much for this!! I’ve been trying to buy quality over quantity as well, but find I get in outfit ruts (just wearing the same combos over and over) – these are such fresh ideas. I would love to see more of this on the Mom Edit!

  6. I don’t have your body type or style but I love your posts! Sweet and creative and pushing me out of my comfort zone. Keep it up :).

  7. Liked the suede dress so much, I immediately went to see if it was still available. Good news: it is and it’s now marked down to $41.99 BUT it is final sale.
