Gorgeous, Wear-Everywhere, Pooch-Hiding, Nursing-Friendly Tops For Spring and Summer

P3069805 While I'm still totally addicted to my pooch-hiding sweater, I do realize that once the temps warm up, I'm going to need a new alternative.  The hunt is on! Or…was on, rather.

On a quick shopping trip right before I took the boys to Gulf Shores, I stumbled upon two gorgeous pieces that are pooch-hiding perfection.

They are effortless, cool (from both a temperature and style perspective), and best of all?  No shaper cami required!

I'm wearing Free People's Convertible Crochet Halter in Ivory, $128.  This top is amazing.  There's not a hint of pooch, the drawstring straps make nursing a cinch, and the straps can be configured to make it a halter top, empire-waist top, etc.

Best of all?  This top looks crazy-amazing with everything:  boyfriend jeans, skinnies, over maxi dresses and flares.

My favorite?  Over flares…

The top is gorgeous, but it's hard to not be distracted by that sunset.  Sigh.

(wearing, bottom pic: same halter, Flexees shaper cami, J.brand lovestory petite jeans, cynthia vincent for target platform sandals)

The other top I'm loving is Gap's Solid Mixed Media Tank in wassel, currently on sale for $30.

This top has a banded-waist bottom to hide the pooch, and the cowl is just low enough to be able to nurse.  Like the Free People top, the shape is crazy-versatile.  I've been wearing mine with skinnies, flares, boyfriend jeans and little skirts or shorts.  This top also comes in a gorgeous pale, pale pink ("hushed violet") that would be perfect with some light-washed flares or white denim.

Have you guys found a perfect go-to piece for Spring / Summer yet?

  1. How cute are your flare jeans!
I found a few good tops at Loft for ths spring. Recently I’ve become a fan of the banded top, it looks neat (without having to actualy tuck someting in, which I hate) and way more put together than an average tee, yet still forgiving in the tummy area. I got this one in darker grey, it looks great wtih regular jeans, skinnies w/boots, and you can also dress it up with a skirt and jacket for work.

  2. I love your crochet top but would be scared to death to wear it (esp in ivory) with my 2 year old. My little guy will be one week tomorrow & therefore I currently fit into nothing, but while I was waiting on him to show up I got some great deals for spring/nursing/pooch on ideeli & some great flowy tops & cardis from Gap. Love this flowy vest from Press:
(bonus: actually fits right now) which should eventually look great with the Guido & Mary trouser flares I picked up for $15 bucks!

  3. Oooo….that vest would do some serious waist-whittling.  Wow.  I love it.
And the free people crochet also comes in black.  πŸ™‚
Thanks for the recos – they're perfect!!

  4. I have a love/hate relationship with Free People. LOVE their clothes, HATE their customer service.
I am, however, going to give-in to my Toms urges in the next couple of weeks. I need “walking to the library and park” shoes!

  5. That crochet top is so straight from my styleboard! LOVE. What shoes/amazing platform sandals are you wearing in the pic w/flares? You look friggin’ fantastic, girl.

  6. Grace, Mad and Ann – Thanks for commenting!!
Emily – So bummed that Free People gave you poor customer service! You weren’t in the one in Denver, were you? But YES – TOMS. The best thing for the park. Like cute sneaks, but so much more comfy sans socks.
Amanda – I actually thought of you when I bought it, LOL! The wedges are Cynthia Vincent’s Target collaboration last year. They sold out everywhere….except my tiny little hometown of Marquette, MI. My sister grabbed a pair for me off the clearance rack!

  7. Kate!! Not sure how I missed your comment, but THANK you! Nice picks!
Amanda – Yeah, Scotti rocks. πŸ™‚
Tamara – Shorts would totally work. I haven’t styled these tops with shorts yet, but I’m planning to. I think over a pair of short cut-offs or other short-shorts would be cute…as long as I still have a couple of inches of hem showing. Or…I also want to try these with a pair of slim long shorts. Wait! I have worn the Gap top with tailored shorts – I just tucked it in.
And in terms of what’s in….pretty much anything goes with shorts this summer. πŸ™‚

  8. Ahhh— I LOVE the crochet top! Especially for the beach… Question– where did you get the Lovestory Petites?? I know Anthro carries them, but they look like a different wash than what you’re wearing. I like yours better! Also– did you stick with your true size? I’m trying to buy up all the petite flares I can find because there are so few options and I adore the silhouette! Thank you! πŸ™‚

  9. JennJ – I got the Lovestory petites at Anthro!  They are a bit lighter in person – the website makes them look very dark.  I stuck with my typical size…which…I may end up regretting.  These are low-ish waisted, so if you squeeze into a size smaller, you risk muffin top, however, they are starting to stretch out a bit.

  10. Hi you guys. I had to alert you to 2 FANTASTIC DEALS that are 100% in line w/ your advice/on-trend: American Eagle “Hi-Rise” Jeans. They come in 2 cuts: a PERFECT destroyed wash ’77 flare ($49.50!!!) & a dark wash skinny ($39.50!!!). It’s like the whole ‘flare is the new silhouette’
and skinnies are still in’ argument is totally affirmed!
The ‘Hi-Rise’ fit is perfection for moms w/ some curves. Hits just below the belly button. They somehow narrow the hips, lift the bum, and elongate the leg. Seriously. I’ve had friends ask me about both pairs b/c they look THAT good. They are true to size, STAY THAT SIZE thru multiple wears, AND are SO soft you won’t want to take them off!!! EUREKA! LOVE THESE JEANS.
I’ve never shopped at AE b/c the cuts just don’t work w/ my (eh-hem) womanly waist/hip ratio. I’m buying a second pair of the Flares to have hemmed for flats, possibly a third to alter into a boyfriend-esqe straight/rolled. The fit is Just. So. Good.
I’m 5’4 and a size 8; the ’77 flares definitely require a platform heal but the knee break and distressed wash/torn knee all hit in EXACTLY the right places. Cannot say enough about these jeans! I just had to get the word out ASAP, I’m so stoked! I have never had jeans fit this well. Ever.

(Will you please reply w/ the e-mail to send them to? I know I’ve seen it on here but couldn’t find it)

  11. Kate – the top is gorgeous! However, I think it depends on how post-partum poochy you are. When I wrote this article I had a pretty good sized pooch, so your the top you linked to wouldn’t have worked. The free people cami has an extra fold down the center (can you see it?) that gave me another layer of camouflage.
This current-season Free People top has a similar shape, but in a different fabric/texture: http://www.freepeople.com/clothes-tops/zig-zag-cami-24443194/
or maybe this Field of Daisies top:
This one is missing that extra fold, but might still be cute over a shaper cami:
A totally different top, but would hide a pooch:
