Hate Tucked-In-Tops? This One Style Solves Everything

Don’t get me wrong. I love the look of tucked-in tops. And while I do go for it sometimes, with my shorter-waisted self, it ends up being a real commitment that isn’t always worth it. Tucking in tops can add too much bulk to my straight waist (I’m not curvy), and I wind up fussing with it all day long.

When I don’t have the energy or patience to tuck in my tops (ahem, daily honestly), thankfully I’ve discovered the best solution: boxy cropped shirts.

Here’s the deal:

  • You don’t have to tuck them
  • They compliment a shorter torso or waist
  • They’re perfect for travel (an easy grab + go style)

Boxy, Cropped (But Not Too Cropped) Shirts Are The Easiest Ever

And good news, friends. Over the last year or two, I’ve found at least 5 different boxy tops that work so beautifully, with no tucking involved. These are the tops I wear on-repeat. When I looked at what I was actually grabbing to put on (when I’m not in a sweatshirt) it’s these. (And I even have a similar sweatshirt recommendation, too. Bc OBVS. Here, it’s this and this.)

I am not wearing many fitted tops these days, yet I still feel stylish and put together in these boxier styles – and easy breezy lemon squeezy, too. LOL. Clothing items I don’t have to fuss with or think about are solid gold, friends.

1 | Free People Easy Street Cotton Sweater

Where To Buy: Nordstrom | Free People | Dillard’s (on sale!)

Sweater (M) | Jeans (28) | Slides

What I Love: You’ve heard quite a few of us rave about this Free People sweater around here. It’s honestly one of the most wearable pieces I’ve gotten over the past year.

It’s soft, cotton (read: not too hot + easy to wash) and just the right mix of cozy and cropped (but not short and revealing.) LOVE it. TTS. Comes in a ton of colors.

2 | Madewell Boxy Tee

Where To Buy: Madewell | Nordstrom

Tee (M) | Jeans (28)

What I Love: This tee has become my go-to of go-to’s. I have it in 3 colors now and want them all. It’s lightweight enough without being really sheer (only the ivory is a tiny bit sheer) It works beautifully under my cropped sweatshirts and sweaters (like the Free People above.) It’s become one of those t-shirts I don’t have to think about.

If I’m wearing any higher waisted pants at all I can pop it on and it works. Amazing for travel. I usually bring all 3.

3 | Everlane Washable Clean Silk Short Sleeve Square Shirt

Where To Buy: Everlane

Everlane silk button-up shirt, silk tee, satin pants, white birkenstock slide sandals, striped tote bag

Shirt (6) | Pants | Weekender Bag | Sandals

What I Love: It’s so breezy! This silk top is also chic and beautiful, but not fussy to wear. I cannot wait for the weather to get warmer so I can grab this all the time again. Need a treat for yourself? Get this. True to size in the shoulders but a little boxy, so plenty of room. Washable!

4 | Everlane Short Sleeve Box Shirt

Where To Buy: Everlane

everlane boxy tee, short sleeve button-up shirt, barrel pants, tan sandals

Shirt (S) | Pants (8) | Similar Sandals

What I Love: I adore a structured white shirt, but I struggle with button downs. I’m raving about these boxy fits here because they accommodate my wider ribcage and don’t gap at the buttons. Love. And the shorter length, again, hits right at the perfect spot where I don’t have to mess with tucking the fabric in.

5 | Everlane Boxy Oxford

Where To Buy: Everlane

everlane boxy shirt, button-up shirt, oxford shirt, white loafers, trousers

Shirt (M) | Pants (S) | Similar Loafers | Bag

What I Love: I really need this in another color because I wear this top so often. I love a collar moment, and I love this one buttoned up or worn over a tee or tank works great. I also love that it’s just easy. Button down shirts are so my vibe but this one I don’t have to struggle with tucking it or with pulling at the buttons.

  1. This! My waist disappeared after 3 pregnancies…so tucked in shirts are not happening. Thanks for showing cute options for my shape.

  2. Laura, you have been hitting my style needs! The truth you have shared about jeans, leggings, and now (slight) crop tops is confirming what I’ve been experiencing but been unable to shop (experiment) espansively. Thank you for your honesty, openness, and research. Please keep it up!
