It’s spring! The season of hope! This is the perfect time to give our big, boring and oh-so-tired sofa a little refresh: Flip those cushions upside down, pound them back into shape (earn a gold star for a quick vacuum), and finish off with some fun new pillows!

6 Throw Pillow Ideas To Refresh A Grey Or Beige Sofa

Choosing pillow pairings to refresh the big, boring and tired sofa can be overwhelming — there are so many different choices out there. One way to make it easier is to simply order all (or most) of the new throw pillows from the same retailer. The key is to keep the mix personal, with varying textures, patterns and/or colors.

A few of our favorite retailers have taken the guesswork out of pillow pairings, and they now have very chic pillow collections or sets, like this Tonal Palette Collection from Pottery Barn and this Stroke of Midnight set from West Elm. Sets are a great way to start. I’ve also got a few suggestions for pairings with a personal touch below, or you can have some real fun, go all wild and crazy and mix and match all the pillows in this post!

Bottom line? Remember they’re just pillows — have some fun with them! Add color, add texture, add graphics and prints, and pile the pillows on your favorite place to plop and cuddle for an instant refresh before you start your next series binge watch session.

1 | Tonal Palettes | Pottery Barn

Size matters, and more is more. An option is to choose the same size pillows and just see hints of them, which is a clean modern look that works especially well when you are working with a tonal palette. These *sustainably sourced pillow sets, that have been pre-planned via Pottery Barn are an easy, and beautifully edited way to get there. Another option is to arrange a 20″ square pillow, behind an 18″ square pillow, behind a 16″ square pillow, so that you can see more of each pillow. Whatever arrangement you choose, these are great sets to choose from! Chambrey Blues are featured, and they are also available in Green, Ivory, Gray, Camel and Charcoal.

2 | Mixing Textures | CB2

The Cotton Velvet 23″ squares from CB2 come in more colors than I can count and in your choice of feather or alternative fill. They are also a beautiful pillow base layer. In terms of great selection, CB2 is a great first stop from which to mix and match throw pillows from one shop. They typically have a plentiful, beautiful selection of pillows that easily work together. All on the same sofa, I recently placed these four beauties layered on the velvets featured above. I love each of them more than the next for their textures and colors primarily; they all look and feel fantastic.

3 | Playfully Geometric | West Elm

West Elm took the work out of things by putting together playful, geometric sets of pillows, AND they also collaborated with Bole Road Textiles, no contest, my favorite happy textiles (and they happen to also be a Black-owned business.) This striped beauty featured is from Bole Roads collection through West Elm. Here are a few other pillow pairings we have our eyes on through West Elm…

4 | BOHO Flair | Jungalow

Jungalow’s tagline is Decorate Wild, and they live true to it in such a beautiful way! There’s something just a ‘lil bit extra in a good way when you move the tassels from the corners, when lines take turns, in beautiful textures, colors and patterns. We can’t get enough of any of these! Here are a few of our favorites…

5 | Bright & Colorful | Anthropologie

Anthro is a great one-stop shop for all things that feel just-unique-enough, yet carry a common theme. In the case of pillows, that theme reads to me as just enough color, just enough fun, easy on the eyes, easy to love and warm. These are a few of our favs from Anthro, where we can find both easy linen and velvet bases, and just the right pops of pattern, right now. Layer larger sizes of the solids behind the textures and patterns, and you hit just the right combo of texture pattern and color!

6 | Easy Graphic Pops | Easi(er) On The Pocket | Awesome!

Our favorite Alexandra Ferguson graphic pillows aren’t free; not at all. But relative to their quality, they are reasonably priced. And, the fun of a huge-pop-of-graphic pillow is that one is enough…you only need one. You can back that special one, with a few more actually affordable texture and color pops, and voilà! You may have seen I LOVE THIS PLACE on Shana’s Bed, which is curious, because I’m fairly certain I style that on her sofa, but hey — if her bed is her place she loves, all the pillow power to her! Again, they’re just pillows — put them wherever makes YOU HAPPY!

  1. I want to get a sofa, but I want to make sure that it matches my living room. It makes sense that getting pillows would be a good way to add customization! That way, I can add colors to enhance the color palette.
