How To Wear Baggy Jeans In Winter: 4 Warm, Easy Outfits I’m Living In

2

Every winter, I become a hardcore jeans-and-a-sweater girl. While I have visions of myself in more interesting, fashion-y winter outfits like…uh…omg haha, I can’t even think of any examples (sweater dress??!?), this winter, ya jeans girl is going to just embrace the uniform.

And by “embrace” I mean go baggy. It’s gonna be a baggy jean winter for me.

Wearing baggy jeans in winter does require a bit of strategy – especially where shoes and coats are involved. The proportions can be tricky, especially if you’re not yet used to the silhouette (give it time). However, the payoff is pretty darn good: baggy jeans are wildly comfortable to wear, have plenty of room to layer (on a truly cold day jeans aren’t enough), and can have an effortlessly chic vibe…when done right.

Warm, Cute & Easy Winter Outfit Formulas For Baggy Jeans

So. After a bit of trial & error, I’ve landed on four winter outfit formulas for baggy jeans that I honestly love wearing. These are the warm, easy, real-life combinations I reach for, whether I’m running out for coffee, bundling up to walk the dog, or trying to look (slightly) pulled-together for dinner.

Here’s exactly how I’m wearing baggy jeans in winter weather. (And – surprise, surprise – they’re all just fresh twists on jeans & a sweater.)

1. Baggy Jeans + Statement-Toe Boots (My Warmest Winter Outfit Formula)

Winter outfit with baggy jeans, statement-toe shearling boots, a cropped flannel puffer jacket, and a tan sweater.

What are statement toe boots, one might ask? Born 3 minutes ago (after much fruitless googling), winter boots with some sort of cool, toe-detail (top stitching, contrasting soles, whipstitch, laces – something) are now known as Statement Toe Boots.

Statement Toe Boots could be chukka boots, moccasins, oxfords, a detailed sort of UGG boot, etc etc etc. Statement toe boots like these completely solve my biggest issue styling baggy jeans in winter: big ‘ol jeans covering big ‘ol boots is visually too much. There’s too many blocks of uniform color, and the outfit ends up looking boring, sloppy, or just off.

With Statement Toe Boots, the look becomes intentional and cool. (And if price is no object…Miu Miu.)

Cashmere sweaters – of any kind, really – are the best option for baggy jeans outfits in winter, because the fabric naturally has such beautiful drape. Even if worn a bit oversized, they still look feminine. (If interested, I have a list of my favorites in Our Guide To The Best Cashmere Sweaters of 2025/2026.)

And then, once the basic outfit (jeans, boots, sweater) is there, I always add at least two finishing touches to make the look feel intentional. Finishing touches can be necklaces, earrings, rings, lipstick – heck, even really dark smokey eyes count as a finishing touch!

A few accessory notes: The two necklaces above are the two I’ve been wearing constantly – they’re antiques, and really special. The long one, in particular, is an actual Victorian-era necklace, once used to hold tiny scissors or those opera glasses on a chain – basically what women used before pockets! Wild. I’m such a pockets girl that I guess I even like Victorian-era pockets. 🙂 Anyway, our antique secret weapon (haha Kat of Stone Cooper) has been hunting these down for us for months. We’re thrilled to be able to offer them in our shop.

And then lastly, let’s talk jackets. I’ve found that the easiest jacket to wear with baggy jeans + boots is almost always a shorter, cropped-ish jacket – like this cute flannel puffer from Athleta.

These exact boots, BTW, are bananas good. I first featured them in our 2026 Winter Boot Guide and then again in my Winter Capsule Wardrobe. They are warm, cozy, fully lined in shearling and easy to walk in. This brand is pretty amazing, too – super high-quality, handmade by artisans (often in Kenya). Highly recommend.

2. Baggy Jeans With Pointy-Toe Boots (A Slightly Dressier Winter Outfit)

To dress my baggy jean uniform up a little, I swear by pointy-toe boots. The sharp point is a perfect offset the casual, easy slouch of the jean, and this particular pair is so darn useful, I now own it in three colors. I started collecting these boots 5 years ago – they’re a really timeless shape.

Add in a black turtleneck sweater for the easiest-ever canvas to decorate with fun accessories. 😉

A few accessory notes: I’ve been drooling over A.L.C’s Simone Bag for years – the slouch is so good – and I couldn’t resist the studs they added this year. My cocktail ring is from a local Philadelphia designer, made here in Philly. It’s a stunner.

This Suzy jacket from Sezane has become one of my most-worn pieces. It’s a unlined wool jacket that’s just warm enough, but has a slightly swingy shape that looks good over almost everything, and is really comfortable to wear. It is one of the most unfussy wool jackets I’ve tried.

And that darn Acne scarf really is as good as they say. 100% wool (but the slightest bit scratchy, if you’re picky about that) and incredibly warm. Like this scarf makes a huge difference. And my 100% cashmere beanie, another small business find, can be worn cuffed or slouchy. One of the few I’ve found that looks cute on my big head, not stupid. 🙂

3. Baggy Jeans + a Long Wool Coat (The Easy Proportion Fix)

I don’t typically love how baggy jeans look with long, wool coats. There’s something about the competing hems of coat + jeans that overwhelms the look. Now, I’m not saying it can’t be done – in fact, off-duty models do it all the time – it’s just…tricky. And I want easy.

My pick? A wool cocoon coat that hit right above the knee.

There’s no competing hems, the look isn’t overwhelming, yet I’ve still got some of those sophisticated, menswear-ish vibes. And the best part about cocoon coats is that they’re cut really easy under the arms & through the body, which means these are one of the few tailored wool coats that fit easily over bulky sweaters.

And, like before, I’m finishing this look off with some finishing touches – necklace, bag, dark eyeshadow. Cute enough!

4. Baggy Jeans With Sneakers (My Easiest Casual Winter Outfit)

The best sneakers with baggy jeans are sleek, low-profile sneakers, rather than chunky, Dad-like sneakers. You want sneakers that almost have a ballet flat vibe – these are the kind that let the baggy jean hems breathe and offer the right kind of balance.

Because it’s winter, I strongly prefer sneakers that are suede, in deeper jewel tones. The extra texture and rich color seems to hold their own better against thick, cozy knits and warm jackets.

Finishing the look off with a playful crossbody bag because…why the heck not? This bag is also from a local designer in Philadelphia, and it’s been my casual go-to for heading to the gym, running errands, or – even – going ice skating. I love how much stuff I can shove in this bag (hat, mittens, glasses, sunglasses, wallet, etc), and the bow detail is so freaking cute. This bag is currently sold out, but we’re working with the designer on a sneaky restock, so sign up to be notified when it comes back in.

That’s it! That’s how I’m wearing baggy jeans in winter. Anyone else figured out an easy combo? If so, spill.

Stay warm out there, Gang!

  1. do you still wear the Re/Done jeans you loved too? They aren’t as baggy as this style but curious if they are still in your rotation…
