The socks-n-sandals pairing have been all over the runways and the blog-o-sphere for….well…over a year now. While there was some backlash initially, socks-n-sandals is now considered de riguer for the avant guard fashion set. And since I've never been one for following traditional fashion rules…I kinda like it.
The easiest way to wear this trend is to pair (thin) socks with wedges or heels in a similar color (as pictured from Burberry Prorsum Spring 2011 RTW). You can mix up the colors a bit (gray with black, etc) but sticking to tone-on-tone is the most fool-proof pairing. Yes? Heels are best? No surprise there.
So now that we agree on how to wear socks-n-sandals on date night (which is just what our guys want to see – a man-repelling trend saved exclusively for our romantic nights)…let's talk about how to incorporate this trend into our everyday, toddler-chasing, outfit rotation.
Here are my takes:

I like the way the socks and sandals somehow make this boyish outfit a bit girly. And much more interesting. Also, the socks make sandals much more practical in these cooler temps while I wait (and wait and wait) for summer. While I tried a few different sandal options, sandals that had serious detailing around the ankle looked the best. Sandals without ankle straps looked a bit too much like the birks-n-socks I wore in high school.
Funny how jeans and a white t-shirt is still the basis for most of my favorite outfits.
For fun, I also played around with exposed socks and ballet flats. I like how this combo spoofs an ankle bootie. And since I don't usually accessorize much when home with the kiddos (statement necklaces, as much as I love them, make it hard to hold a baby without hitting him in the face or run around without hitting myself in the face)…doing something unexpected with legwear helps keep boring seperates from being totally boring, in the absense of cool jewelry.

The trick to these outfit photos is to take 'em when you can. So you'll have to look past the swords. The pic below is the one I posted to my Weardrobe account (which I'm pretty sure I'm too old for). I can't imagine what those 20-something hipsters think of my "accessories".
They probably think I'm really into D&D. OMG.
