I Finally Give Over-The-Knee Boots a Chance

As an allllmost 5’4″ high-top loving gal I just didn’t think over-the-knee boots were in any way for me. I know Shana and I are very close in height, but she rocks a little dressier style than I do and you know, I just love my jeans and sneakers, so I never gave OTK’s a try.

Well… the whole TME team (mostly Shana) gave me grief for not even trying on a single pair of these boots. OK! I heard you! I ordered 3 pairs to check out…and…OMG. No, seriously, omg!!! Where have you been all my short-girl life????

The Killer Pair I Didn’t Think I’d Like

When I unpacked these from the box I was fairly certain they were SO not my style. The toe is pointed and they are super tall. But. I put them on. And then I had a stroke of genius to grab my moto jacket and I love this outfit. Holy. I do. They make me feel super badass and tall. And I wish wish wish I could’ve kept two pairs. The Most Gorgeous Pair of Boots In The Land

To quote Michelle on Full House (who has even done that in like 15 years) “have mercy.” I opened these and the buttery suede grabbed me by the shoe-loving part of my heart (it’s a big part). I wanted to try out one pair that wasn’t black, but I really didn’t think they’d be flattering in a lighter color.  These not only fit well, stayed up and were flattering, but they are comfortable, too. (If you would wear heavy socks with them though I’d size up 1/2 size). I’ll be honest I kind of have an obsession with them now. You understand.

I’m really into this color pairing with the light gray jeans (you may see this again soon!) It’s a nice departure from the black skinnies that have been on (too) major repeat lately. And it’d be lovely with a cozy ivory sweater for the winter, too.

The Not-So OTK But Waterproof Pair

I’m really not sure what pose I thought I was striking in that first photo. #goofballpose This pair I was excited to try because of the waterproof element, though, obviously. I won’t mention the rain here again…oops. They are a great substantial boot that really would hold up well to weather, but I was disappointed that they weren’t taller. I think if you’re in a city and situation where you walk a lot and need a good weatherproof boot that doesn’t look it, these may be it. Also, if you’re shorter than I am you might like where they hit. I think over tights or leggings I might have been able to pull them up a bit taller. But overall, these were more of a super practical rather than super stunning pair.

JacketFree People Vegan Hooded Faux Leather Moto Jacket – I adore this jacket. It looks like you’re wearing a hoodie underneath, but it’s just the removable hood. I bought it pretty fitted but size up if you plan to wear with heavier sweaters. Size 4, for reference.

Sweater – (similar) Everlane The Cashmere Turtleneck – I cannot get the image to work here, but it’s such a great price point for a cashmere sweater, I had to include it.

Dark Gray JeansMadewell High Rise Skinny Jeans – You know Madewell 9″ High Rise skinnies are my faves. This color is so great, too. Size 27, for reference.

Light Gray JeansExpress High Waisted Stretch Performance Jean Legging – These are really great and I’ve had a tough time finding a flattering pair of light gray jeans. The wash is nice and they are so soft but still substantial. Love. Size 4 short, for reference.

My OTK Boot Edits

I pulled together a few more of my favorites below. As you can see, I’m a sucker for the suede. Many of these are on sale right now during the Nordstrom clearance sale, too. And for more of our sale edit, be sure to check out Jess’ post.

Ok, ok. So I’m officially a convert! Over-the-knee boots are a really special addition to my closet that I can now wear on date nights, cold days, holidays – pretty much every day I want to step up my outfit game a bit since they are low heeled. I highly recommend at least trying some out if you haven’t yet. You’ll be surprised, I just know it!

Let me know what you try, too. Follow me on Instagram @elletrain and tag me if you check some out. I’d seriously love to see if any of you convert like I did.

Until next time, I’ll just be over here jamming to JT’s song from the Trolls movie…(cannot stop it with that song, right??!)

  1. So glad to see OTK boots have left Pretty Woman territory! I haven’t purchased knee high boots in years (ankle boots only) and as I’ve been trying them on again, they aren’t flattering (upper calf pinch, ain’t pretty) OTK boots solve this problem and with a little va va voom!

  2. I’d love to the see a post about over the knee boots with dresses. I’m just not sold on them otherwise. I don’t know what it is?!

    • Yes I agree, something about how it makes you look like you’re wearing shorts with leggings or something….it’s like the proportions are off with jeans/leggings, but I LOVE the way they look with dresses !!!

  3. Oh Man, I’d love to have some OTK boots, or even knee-high boots, but as a woman with “athletic” calves it’s just not happening. They just don’t make much for high quality boots in wide-calf (I refuse to drop a ton of cash on junky ones from plus size stores. Can’t they just make quality?)

You ladies all look fantastic in them though!!! I think OTK boots are perfect for winter. 🙂

  4. I just recently got a pair as well! I am also 5’4″ and thought that it would make me look shorter, but I had been really curious to try them out. I snatched a pair much like your third option (just kinda barely over the knee) on the clearance rack at DSW and I am loving them!
