J.Crew vs. Quince: Battle of the Wool Winter Coats

7

This winter, I’ve been building up my workwear wardrobe because I’ve been going to more events for entrepreneurs. My winter coat selection is a bit more ski bunny than serious, so I began searching for a new wool winter coat to wear to work events. When I saw that Quince had added wool coats to its lineup, I knew I wanted to try the coats out and compare them to my go-to winter coat brand, J.Crew.

I picked one favorite from each brand, which was the Quince Italian Wool Cocoon Coat and the very similar-looking J.Crew Villa Coat.  So, strap in, because I’m going to dissect the pros and cons of each coat and find out which one emerges as the ultimate winner for keeping us warm and chic this season.

1/ Warmth

Let’s kick things off with a cozy note. Winter is all about staying snug, and when it comes to warmth, the J.Crew Villa Coat takes the lead. The Villa coat boasts a thick (and pretty) lining that wraps you up like a warm hug. Picture those frosty mornings when the biting wind makes you question leaving the house—enter the Villa Coat, your trusty shield against the chill. The extra insulation ensures that you’ll be toasty even on the coldest days.

The Quince Italian Wool Cocoon Coat, on the other hand, feels lighter. The coat is lined, but the lining simply isn’t as thick, and the coat is really better suited to a mildly cold climate. The lining is a dark grey that matches rather than contrasts with the wool fabric of the coat, and while that does look cohesive, I preferred the contrasting detail of the pink piping on the lining of the Villa coat.

2/ Design Details: Buttons, Pockets, and Collars

The little things matter – buttons, pockets, seams, hemlines, collars. One detail I liked about the Villa coat was the lovely buttons that contrasted with the color of the coat. Easy to unbutton and secure, the buttons on the Villa coat worked better for me than the hidden buttons on the Cocoon Coat. The Cocoon Coat has invisible buttons, which gives the coat a very streamlined look. However, it’s a little bit awkward to try to button the coat into the hidden panel that covers the buttons from view when the coat is closed.

While it may not have the same heft in the lining department or simple and chic button details, the Quince coat embraces a minimalist design, focusing on the quality of the Italian wool to provide a sleek, tailored silhouette. Kat saw me wearing this coat and immediately noted the design of the pockets, which are sleek rather than bulky. The curve of the pocket cut mirrors the line of the collar on the coat, which is aesthetically pleasing.

The collars of these two jackets, while at first glance similar, actually felt quite different to wear. The thick wool fabric of the J.Crew coat is borderline stiff, and the collar funnels up around the neck to keep you warm. While some may love this feature of the coat (particularly if you are sensitive to the cold, but don’t want to fuss with a scarf), I preferred the collar on the Quince coat because it stood further away from my face. I simply didn’t want the fabric touching my cheeks and chin that much.

3/ Value and Quality

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room—price. J.Crew has a reputation for quality, and the Villa Coat is no exception. It’s an investment piece that promises longevity and offers classic style. On the other hand, the Quince Italian Wool Cocoon Coat offers a more budget-friendly alternative without compromising too much on quality. However, J.Crew often discounts its coats, making the price more competitive with the Quince option than you might imagine.

My Winner: The J.Crew Villa Coat

Choosing between the J.Crew Villa Coat and the Quince Italian Wool Cocoon Coat ultimately depends on your priorities. If you’re on a quest for unparalleled warmth, the Villa Coat is your go-to winter companion. However, if you crave a coat that seamlessly blends sophistication with a friendlier price point, the Quince option might steal your heart. My pick is the J.Crew Villa coat. I felt that the overall quality and value of the Villa coat was higher than the Quince Cocoon Coat, particularly because of the heavier weight and the beautiful lining on the J.Crew coat.

I hope this helps you in your quest for winter warmth. Let me know in the comments if you’ve tried either brand or coat and what your thoughts are.

  1. Does J. Crew really still deserve that reputation for quality? They definitely used to, but I stopped buying from them several years ago because the quality had dropped so much. Have they course-corrected since then? I hope so…

    • I can only speak to the Villa Coat I reviewed in the article and compare it to the Lady coat (still a style they sell) that I’ve probably had for 15 years. I found the quality comparable – the lining looks nice and is stitched well, the material feels similar to the touch, and the buttons and zippers were high quality. I’m not sure if there are issues with other styles – I’d check out Scotti’s recent reviews if you want to know more about other options from the brand.

  2. I didn’t realize Quince made wool coats so I need to give this a try. I like everything about the J Crew Villa coat except the collar, which is disproportionately big and looked strange on me. Maybe it works better for those with longer necks?
