J.Crew Winter Coat Try-On: I Ordered 10, Loved 5

It’s that time of year again! The time I order all the coats from J. Crew to see which ones fit best and review them for you guys. I first did this back in 2020, and again last year. My favorite winter coats almost always come from J.Crew (and we’re talking since high school…when my sister, my mom, and I all had the exact same peacoat).

They just always have the warmest fabrics and classic, timeless cuts that make them the coats I end up wearing for years instead of seasons. (And they do color really, really well.)

Are J.Crew Winter Coats Still Worth It? I Tried 10

Some of my all-time favorites have remained at the top of my list year after year – like their Chateau Parka, Cocoon Coat, and Daphne Topcoat. These three are all in heavy rotation when the weather gets colder and every year I end up picking them as favorites. The colors may change, but the fit and quality is always on point.

Every year I try some of their new styles as well – some are hits and some are misses. A miss for me this year? This cropped puffer. Some reviewers loved it, but I agree with the one who said the shoulders and sleeves are “comically huge.” (Loved the bright red color, though.)

Speaking of that gorgeous bright red, one of my favorite stand-out pieces was their Puffer Snowsuit…which was a surprise since I kiiiind of ordered it as a joke. It was definitely a hit!

1. J. Crew Puffer Snowsuit with PrimaLoft

Puffer Snowsuit with PrimaLoft (s) | Uggs

This is obviously not a coat, but it was my favorite piece from the entire haul. I ordered it on a whim, just to see how bad it would be…but, surprisingly, I loved it. First of all, it’s INSANELY warm…it’s filled with PrimaLoft, a down alternative that feels really lightweight despite being so warm. (I was surprised by how light it felt given how much heat it kept in.)

I love that the (detachable!) collar isn’t a hood, but a stand up collar – it keeps the faux fur right around the neck, keeping it warm. (Some hoods fall so low on the back when they’re not being worn so there’s no warmth benefit.)

The cinched waist has an adjustable drawstring and the sleeves and legs are cuffed to keep the warmth in – the cuffs on the legs fit inside boots while the actual pants fit outside of them.

This one was also made at a Fair Trade Certified™ factory that “provides additional income and better conditions for the people who work there,” which is always a plus. (Also in a cream color – but I love the bright red!)

2. Chateau Parka in Italian stadium cloth

Ok, so when it came to the actual coats, the winner was the exact same coat I chose as the winner back in 2020: The Chateau Parka in Italian Stadium Cloth. The fabric is super warm so there’s no need for extra bulky filling. (I love it as an alternative to my puffers.)

I also love that it looks good left open or zipped up…

…and the gold details and faux fur hood make this one stand out. It also comes in grey, camel, and a pretty bright pink color. (And was also made at a Fair Trade Certified™ factory!)

3. Cocoon Coat in Italian stadium-cloth wool blend

This Cocoon Coat is my second overall pick. I love the standing collar that isn’t too overwhelming and the fabric (that same stadium-cloth wool blend as the Chateau Parka above) that’s super warm without being bulky.

Reviewers love this one too – and I agree that it runs slightly big. I’m wearing a 4 here and it was just slightly oversized. (It also comes in a gorgeous green color as well as grey and classic black.)

4. New Daphne Topcoat in Italian boiled wool

This was another repeat favorite from a previous post. I like this one because it’s like a heavy sweater (but warmer!) – there’s no lining, so it doesn’t have the same somewhat restrictive feel of a typical coat.

It does run slightly big – I tried the 4 as well as the 2 (pictured above) and it was too big. (I’m typically a 6/28 in pants and a 4 in jackets.) This one also come in a bright sunny yellow, pretty pink, and classic camel and black.

5. Mirabelle Topcoat in Italian wool blend

This one looked great buttoned up, but I didn’t love the shape of the bottom when it wasn’t (there’s too much fabric to leave it open). Which isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker, because the shape of the coat when it’s buttoned is absolute perfection.

It’s made of mostly wool with a hint of cashmere for softness – and the fabric feels nice and smooth. It also comes in a pretty light blue, camel, and classic black.

6. Long Villa Coat in Italian stadium-cloth wool blend

This one surprised me! The shorter version of this coat is one of my favorite, most-worn coats – I get complimented on it almost every time I wear it. So I was excited to try this longer version, but it completely overwhelmed me.

I’m wearing a 2 here (the same size I own of the shorter version) and it’s laughably big on me. I’m going to stick to the shorter version I have and love (which also comes in a gorgeous red, bright blue, ivory, black, and camel), but the long version would look great on a taller person (and also comes in black).

7. Double-breasted Topcoat in Italian melton wool blend

This menswear-inspired coat is made from “Melton wool fabric,” a wool that’s nice and smooth (and warm!) and is generally considered to be the most weather-resistant of all woolen materials. (Fun fact from J.Crew’s site!)

It’s definitely oversized by design. It has a longer hemline and more structured shoulders…and it runs big. I’m wearing a 2 here and a 0 would work better. **This one is on crazy sale right now, too – usually $450, it’s on sale for $180!

8. New Lady Day Topcoat in Italian double-cloth wool blend

I love this coat. I’ve loved it for years…it’s giving Oliva Pope/Jackie O vibes. I love the shape and covered buttons, but I find the sizing to be tricky. I’m pear-shaped, so typically this one is too tight across the hips if it fits in the shoulders. It would be perfect for a true hourglass figure.

The best thing about this coat (aside from the Thinsulate liner for extra warmth!) is always the fun colors it comes in. This year (in addition to the red above and classic black), it’s available in purple, pink, orange, and ivory colors.

9. Palais Topcoat in Italian melton wool

Palais Topcoat in Italian melton wool (4) | jeans (28) | boots (also at Amazon)

Like the menswear-inspired topcoat above (#7), this one is also made from Melton Wool (the most weather-resistant wool). And although this one is meant to be oversized as well, I would probably need to size down to a 2 for a better fit. I do like the unique collar and wide shoulders on this one. Also in brown and ivory, I’m wearing the black here, but it appears more navy (both in person and in the picture) than J.Crew’s website shows.

10. Warwick Topcoat in Italian stadium-cloth wool blend

Warwick Topcoat in Italian stadium-cloth wool blend (2) | sweater (s) | jeans (28) | boots (also at Amazon)

This coat is a best-seller and has rave reviews – but it definitely runs big! I’m wearing a 2 here and would probably size down 1-2 sizes for the right fit. I do love the gold details and the back-waist tab that nips in the waist to accentuate curves.

This one also comes in grey, beige, navy, and black but I was drawn to this bright pink color – call it Barbiecore or dopamine dressing, but it’s just an instant mood-booster!
