A girl walks into J.Crew and…you already know how it ends: She walks out with a rollneck sweater. Obviously. And yes – I did walk out with a rollneck sweater (much improved since the iconic original, FYI), as well as a small handful of pieces that felt especially fresh for fall.
And by “especially fresh” I mean chocolate brown. If you, too, have been dreaming in rich, chocolate browns these days, I suspect this post will strike a chord. Or ‘cord‘. 😉
Let’s get into it.
The Best of J.Crew Right Now: 7 Pieces Not To Miss (Says Me)
In addition to the deliciousness that is the new J.Crew rollneck sweater, there’s a pair of corduroy pants (and matching jacket!!! omg!!) that are totally worth considering, as well as the skirt I have worn, like, 12 times since it came home with me, a French-girl dress for fall, and pink utility pants that I can’t decide if I should keep or not. Weigh in, pls!
1. J.Crew Rollneck Sweater Review
sweater (s) | pants (28p) | shoes (also at Nordstrom | bag (similar)
The new rollneck sweaters are a little looser through the armholes and body, and have a slouchier fit than the old 1995 version. Still 100% cotton, still thick and soft, but this new version is…well, it’s perfect. The only issue is that it’s really tough to pick a color. I love this chocolate brown, but they also just released a new stripe colorway in ivory/navy/red and then…there’s always classic navy. 1995 me loooooved her navy rollneck sweater. Hmmmm.
Size notes: I tried on the XS, S and Medium sizes, and ended up going with my usual size: it’s perfectly oversized, right out of the box.
2. J.Crew Vintage Flare Corduroy Pants
tee (similar re/done tee) | pants (28p) | flats | bag
J.Crew’s Vintage Flare Pant in corduroy are freaking fantastic: ridiculously comfortable (read: stretchy) and flattering. They’re made from 98% cotton, 2% elastane. They’re not thin, though – while they are soft and do have stretch, they’re a far cry from those thin-and-stretchy skinny cords we used to wear. These feel like REAL CORDS…but comfy and cute ones.
Sizing notes: Tall girls, don’t worry – I’m wearing a petite length here, but they do come in regular and tall sizes, too. I sized up to a size 28 petite because I don’t like anything tight on my stomach these days, but in hindsight, they have stretched out just a little, and I would’ve been fine with my regular size (27p). Thanks to the perfectly shaped flare, I can get away with both flat shoes and a low heel (see later photos).
3. J.Crew Cropped Barn Jacket in Corduroy
jacket (s) | pants (28p) | sneakers | bag (similar)
The only thing better than a barn jacket is a cropped one in corduroy. It’s so ridiculously cute I…can’t even. Looks good with everything, even dresses (more photos below). Same comfy fabric (98% cotton, 2% elastane) as the pants. This jacket is freaking great.

4. J.Crew Ladylike Featherweight Cashmere Cardigan
cardigan (s) | pants (28p) | clogs
This J.Crew Featherweight Cashmere Cardigan is one of my favorite cardigans to wear as tops. I own a couple of these, and not only are they beautiful tops all on their own, but they’re light enough (and dressy enough) to layer with camis and dresses…without ruining the outfit. 100% cashmere.

5. J.Crew Painter Pants (Cotton/Canvas Utility Pants)
tee (similar re/done tee) | pants (28) | clogs | bag
These pants are like a seriously cool twist on khaki pants. They have Rachel-Comey-esque details (compare to her Handy Pants), a spot-on range of unique colors (just three, but all good) and a fresh fit: loose, but high-rise. They’re 100% cotton, too.
Size notes: I wanted these slouchier and a little lower on my hips so I went up a size. They just come in only one inseam length, but because they’re so crisp, they keep a cuff really well so I wouldn’t need to hem – I’ll just make a cuff if I need one.
sweater | pants (28) | sneakers | bag
I was initially worried about the pink…but they’re working pretty darn well with some of my most-worn pieces: an oversized black, cashmere sweater and Vans. Spoiler: I’m 90% convinced that the oversized cashmere sweater I’m wearing (from Quince!!) is going to win the top spot in this year’s cashmere guide. We’ll see (but I’d snap it up now before it sells out).
6. J.Crew Floral Skirt For Fall
tee (similar re/done tee) | skirt (xs) | sneakers | bag
This skirt has quickly become one of the most useful things in my closet. It’s been great for those cooler mornings/warm afternoons that are hallmarks of early fall, and it looks cute with Vans, sneakers and ballet flats (all of my most-worn shoes).
But this skirt isn’t just for warmer weather – look how well it works with fall jackets and clogs!

These clogs, BTW, are the most comfortable clogs I’ve EVER worn. I had been wanting to mention them for a while, but they sold out at Sezane in a hot second. Happily, they were *just* restocked (that said – I wouldn’t wait). They’re fantastic.
7. J.Crew Floral Dress Review (French-Girl Vibes)
This dress is so similar to Reformation dresses, but I found the sizing much more forgiving. Same cute French-girl vibes, but a stretchier fabric and more forgiving waist and bust area. It’s one of those pieces that’s easy to fall in love with (and really easy to wear).
While I initially thought this dress was too summery, in person there’s something about it that vibes fall. So much so that I can style it up with corduroy and clogs, and it all works.

Soooo….do I keep the pink pants, Gang???
