There’s something you probably don’t know about me, and I should just come out and say it: I was totally that person who was living in sweats even before 2020 happened. There, I admitted it.
I know it’s much more trendy to look like I discovered sweat sets in the year of staying at home, but what can I say? I have always preferred the comforting act of wrapping my body up in sweatshirt material. I imagine there will come a day soon when the world grows tired of matching loungewear and instead begins showing up to breakfast in evening gowns (or maybe that day has already arrived for you,) but while everyone is looking like a character out of Bridgerton, I will be arriving to the breakfast table still wrapped up in sweatshirt material.
Good American Sweats, Essentials & A Really Great Shacket
To no surprise, I was beyond excited to find the Good American lines they call Good Essentials and Good Sweats. The essentials include everything from your everyday leggings, oversized crew tees and long sleeves, bike shorts and even a shacket. The sweats, as you can guess, include a wide range of different sweatshirts (hoodies, zip-up’s, cropped and the like,) as well as sweatpants in multiple silhouettes and even sweatshorts.
It was the incredible color choices that drew me over to the website to ogle the collections, but it was the fact that they took such basic clothing items — a sweatshirt and sweatpants — and made them in multiple different cuts and styles to adhere to a wide range of preferences and body types that sparked so much joy for me! I knew I had to try these on, if only just to see a few of these beautiful fabric colors in person.
Good American Boyfriend Zip Hoodie & Sweatpants

Hoodie | Sweatpants | Tank Bra | Sneakers
These sweatpants are my personal fav — the boyfriend sweatpants. True to my natural style as they are a bit oversized, but unlike anything I’ve ever owned in that they have extra fabric to create that baggy look near the bottom. With the tighter cuff at the ankles, the extra fabric bunches up in a really rad way. They are really high rise, and I have them pulled up pretty high here, but you could wear them a little lower for an even more dramatic slouch look. I paired it with the boyfriend zip hoodie that features the same concept – extra fabric in the arms to create an oversized vibe, yet the rest of the sweatshirt is true to my body size.
Good American Boyfriend Sweatshirt & Good Waist Joggers

These sweatpants are the “Jogger” — they’re more fitted sweatpants than any I have ever owned. They have a nice tight cuff at the bottom, which would make them easy to slip into boots, as well as a great high rise. I’m rocking them with another boyfriend style sweatshirt, which again has extra long sleeves to create that oversized slouchy look.
Boyfriend Sweatshirt | Leggings
The boyfriend sweatshirt that I was rocking up above can be seen here on the left untucked. I found that it was a lot more cropped on me than the model made it appear online. The length made it ideal for tucking into the sweats and leggings, which made the slouchy arms even better in my opinion. The leggings are definitely ones I would wear lounging or styled with an outfit — not to work out in. They are made with a heavyweight cotton that feels very quality and is also pretty dang body hugging. What I love most is that they are unlike any leggings I own since I stack my closet with the buttery-workout versions. They are super high-rise, which is always a plus.
Good American Boyfriend Crew Tee & Sweatshorts
Crew Tee | Sweatshort | Slippers
I’m going to be honest, my first impression of the sweatshorts sent me straight to high school basketball practice when all of our athletic shorts hit right above the knee. But as I styled a few options with these, they definitely won me over. I prefer rolling the waistband once — when you roll any of the sweats, the drawstring hangs out which I kinda love. I ordered the crew tee in two colors and I really like them; they are heavyweight, have a slightly dropped shoulder, and extra-long sleeves (my personal tee preference).
Good American Long Sleeve Crew Tee
Long Sleeve Crew Tee | Sweatshorts
This is the crew tee, just with long sleeves. Here you see the length in full, which is exactly what you get with the tee. It’s an instant classic for the wardrobe that I imagine I would throw on for backyard hangs, cooler late nights, and tucked into sweats for around the house.
Good American Shacket
Ooooo baby, THE SHACKET. I’ve tried on a good handful of these lately, and this one is really, really good. Immediately upon opening, it made me think of a piece you would pull from your beloved grandpa’s closet, which is just a major win for me. I could have sworn it was made out of wool (and, like, the word is in the name), but it’s actually described as a “wool-like fleece” which blew my mind. The only problem I had, which is very minor, is that because it was called “Oversize Wool Shacket” I bought my true size assuming there would be a great oversize slouch like the model was rocking. This was a bit more fitted than I expected. I would love to have this hanging on me a bit more, and ordering a size larger would allow me to wear bulkier layers underneath. Once you get the size right, however, it’s GOLD.
Shop Good American Essentials + Sweats
I absolutely love how the majority of these pieces were unlike anything I owned. I didn’t think it was possible to put a new spin on sweats, but I really think Good American nailed it. They took the oversized trend and made items appear big with extra fabric in strategic places, yet still made the body of the garments fit properly. Maybe designers will start crafting evening gowns out of sweatshirt material so I can join the breakfast table looking fancy — or maybe I’ll just show up in Good Sweats.
I can already spoil my own imagination….I will totally be in Good Sweats.
