I need all the motivation I can get to move my body. New workout clothes in exciting colors never fail, and Zella is killing it with pretty hues and a great fit, plus some other pieces I find perfect for mom life and lounge time.

Earlier this year, I was working out four to five days a week — the most consistent I’d been in my life. I could wake up before my kids and do it in peace. I was getting more energetic and toned. I loved it. But it all collapsed when the patch I had over a big hole in my life, pretending it didn’t exist, tore open, and I fell.

Current Motivation: Zella Workout & Loungewear

Anxiety attacks and crying became an everyday occurrence, and little by little, my energy and smile vanished. I was in a deep hole with no way to climb out without help, but this time I asked for it. I found a therapist in my country and started trauma therapy via Zoom right away.

Six months have passed, and despite my therapist’s recommendation to move my body, it’s been hard. Exercising once a week is a whole event right now, but my goal is to make it three. Here’s what I’m doing (and what I’m wearing!):

For Outdoor Exercise: Zella Long Sleeve Tees

Being outside clears my mind more than anything else. If I don’t get my workout done in the morning, fuhgeddaboudit! It’s the only way to do it in peace without my kids interrupting every second. The minute I wake up, I change into my workout clothes and head out the door (half-asleep) to my driveway. As the weather has cooled off, I transitioned from sports bras to long-sleeve tees.

This Zella Gen Long Sleeve Performance Tee has a relaxed fit, if you don’t want anything snug. The moisture-wicking and quick-drying material make it perfect to work out on chilly days. And this color will seriously make you smile. It’s so beautiful and looks stunning with burgundy.

Now, if you want something more form-fitting with unique details, this Zella Tipped Seamless Long Sleeve Top will take your breath away. It did to my mom. So much so, I had to take it off and give it to her. Look at those contrasting trims.

Zella High-Waisted Leggings: What Workout Dreams Are Made Of

Finally! A pair of leggings I love. The regular high-waist rise comes up under my belly button, but these Zella Renew Ultra High Waist Leggings are perfect for those of us who prefer an even higher rise. You should also know they’re made with recycled polyester.

Zella Styled For Workout-to-Street

My workouts are nothing fancy. I have memorized a warm-up/stretch routine and a list of things I like to do (usually lots of glute work or HIIT). Upper body moves are so boring to me, so for now, I only do things I enjoy. Usually, by the 30-minute mark, I go back inside for the morning madness, including taking my 3-year-old to pre-k so I don’t lose my mind my oldest can study from home.

Pop a cozy layer on, and I’m ready to go. This Zella Flurry Fleece Pullover is like a big warm hug. Who doesn’t want one of those? It’s soft, warm, stylish? The split hem makes a front tuck easy and clean while still keeping your tush warm.

Loungewear Beyond Exercise: Rest For My Mental Health

I’ve had to learn to stop and be OK with doing nothing — which is one of the hardest things for a recovering perfectionist and people pleaser like me. For the longest time, I’ve determined my worth by how much I get done or give to others…except me. Making time to relax and enjoy the little things is equally important to pumping my blood with a workout for my mental health. I matter. You matter.

This year I, as you may have too, learned that lounging around the house feels even more amazing when you’re feeling cute. I fell in love with this set, the fit of the joggers is like no other, and the color is a nice break from the ordinary neutral colors. I often use color psychology to get dressed, and violet inspires imagination, creativity, reflection and self-awareness — that should explain my obsession with it this year.

I’m still climbing my way out of the hole, but it doesn’t seem as deep anymore.

  1. I absolutely love these colors! Especially the deep violet. They look great on you! You are just gorgeous.

I hope you find the peace and healing you’re looking for. Thank you for opening up; I feel for you and your struggles. This year has been brutal for me too. I’m going to just keep on keeping on, trying to get better for me and for my family. <3

    • Yes, let’s just keep on keeping on. I also hope you keep getting better and hopefully we’ll have a better new year. Storms are not meant to last forever. Thank you for your words. Xoxo

  2. Thank you so much (to all of the TME team) for your honesty in your struggles with mental health. So important for people to know they are not struggling alone. xoxo

  3. Thank you for sharing about your mental health. The more we normalize how important it is and that it’s okay to not be okay, the better we all will be. Wishing you peace. ❤️

Ps you look adorable in those outfits. Love the color on you!

  4. You look beautiful and your3 right, when you look cute you feel better! Thank you for sharing your struggles. I’m glad you’re climbing out of your dark hole and feeling better! Sending prayers and good vibes!

  5. Thank you for your honesty. I know first-hand how hard confessions like these are with people you love and who support you. I can’t imagine the strength to talk about it in public (even as wonderfully supportive as TME readers are). I hope you are proud of your strength – you are facing your trauma. You are doing great. Really. Also, you look like a friggin’ goddess. I am not going to buy the outfits, though, because I will feel bad when I don’t look like something out of an Renaissance masterpiece 🙂

  6. These colors were absolutely made for you, and you look absolutely stunning! I’m so sorry you’ve been struggling, lovely. Thanks for your honesty and vulnerability. I wish you endless joy in the new year!

  7. This story blew me away. Thank you for sharing what you’ve been going through, and your vulnerability and strength make you look even more beautiful in these clothes! Wishing you all the best this year.

  8. Wow, your honestly and vulnerability are amazing. You are helping to make prioritizing one’s mental health normal! I am glad you are feeling more like yourself and will be glad to see you back. I love the fuzzy pullover best on you. (And I totally understand the “taking a preschooler to pre-k to save one’s sanity.” Mine was home for 6 months–when his school reopened, it was a game-changer for us all!)

  9. Thanks for sharing your anxiety feelings and I hope you continue to feel better. I’ve had them too. They come and can go – don’t be discouraged. On another note, I love those jewel colors and they look fantastic on you too! I have also used the new workout clothes as incentive to get myself to actually work out.

  10. Julieta, I am so moved by your post. I applaud and so appreciate your honesty and vulnerability in sharing your struggles. The more folks that open up about their mental health challenges, the more those of us who have shared similar experiences feel less alone. I’ve had a couple of very severe bouts of intense anxiety and depression in my life. The first time lasted months and I couldn’t eat, sleep or function at all really, and nearly dropped out of college because of it. The second time was when my kids were quite young, and it lasted a few very intense weeks. Fortunately for me, it was more or less situational and passed with time. Therapy has also been very helpful to me. I believe certain supplements (especially vitamin D, probiotics and fish oil), self care, and more recently, meditation, have helped as well. My daughter has also been struggling with anxiety and trauma, and the anxiety piece runs in my family as well. Know that it can and does get better, with the right therapy and support system in place. Sending thoughts and prayers of love, light, healing and strength your way! And on a lighter note, I so admire your impeccable style. You are beautiful and I love these colors on you so much! I wouldn’t have thought to pair the plum and watermelon colors, but love them together. So gorgeous, especially with your coloring. Thanks for inspiring us all, now in more ways than “just” fashion. 💓
