Weekend 6.24

We made it to the shore! We’re trying out Belmar, NJ this year, and so far we love it. Despite the dreary weather, the kids have been surfing everyday, the dog beach is an absolute joy, and it turns out that Belmar has some seriously good food. The Peruvian food at Santo Ceviche made me almost weep from happiness (the Lomo Saltado is perfect for these cooler days), and the Birria tacos at Los Barbaros blew our minds. Birria tacos, if you haven’t heard of them (I had not) are basically tacos fried until they’re crispy and then you dunk them in a richly flavored broth.

I mean.

We’re trying out Klein’s tonight for Lobster Rolls, followed by peanut butter Italian Ice (mixed with ice cream) at Strollos (we went last night) and OH MY GOD, you guys, sun or no sun IT FINALLY FEELS LIKE SUMMER.

Apparently Mike is acting differently, too. He was bustling around the little kitchen here this morning, asking Pax what he wanted to do today. Pax immediately demanded to know why Mike wasn’t working, and when Mike explained that it was the weekend (blank look from Pax) and that he doesn’t work on weekends (sidenote – Mike has always had a M-F job, literally Pax’s whole life), Pax responded with “YOU DON’T WORK WEEKENDS?? WHY AM I JUST HEARING ABOUT THIS NOW?”

So yeah – we are all very excited about weekends round here.

Crochet dresses. Ok, so I know this is strange, but those crochet dresses (with ‘granny squares’) really are freaking fantastic. They’re as easy and flattering as stretchy ribbed dresses, but are wayyyy more interesting. I know I’ve mentioned my Staud one before, but it’s because I literally wear it EVERYWHERE. It’s a cover-up at the beach with flip-flops, I run errands in it with sneakers, and go out at night with little sandals. It’s bananas good. Anyway, the reason I mention it AGAIN is because Marine Layer has a very similar one on sale at Nordstrom right now that looks great. Oh – also in stripe!

I spent last summer stealing Pax’s Oofos slides because that padded, ergonomic footbed is NOT to be trifled with. This year Oofos slides now come in taupe that is…mayyyybe…chic??

AHHHH!! My favorite boyfriend jeans of all time have just been re-stocked! They’re soft & stretchy, high-rise (but not too high), and under $70 (which…is not my usual move, I know). You can see them on me, here or here. I know I’m not alone in my love for these jeans – several of you guys have reported back that they are, indeed, as fabulous as I said. High-five.

Bluebird. I love stalking Adidas’ website for cool new color combos, and the Stan Smiths in ‘core white/bluebird/core black’ are exactly that. Or – oh gosh – the ‘cloud white / off white / dash gray’ has the prettiest subtle stitching that is so sweet.

I found my go-to cotton tank top. Kule’s Spaghetti Tank is the first tank I’ve found – in years – that I’m actually excited about. While I usually end up all, ‘whatever, good enough’ with cotton summer tanks, this one is wildly good. It’s super soft, incredibly well-made, and very flattering on. It runs small, however, so size up. Kule is offering 20% off when you buy two, but sizes are selling pretty fast. If you’re coveting the the green (the preppy 70’s vibes are so good – I’m wearing it now), Shopbop has it fully stocked, too.

For the boys. My kids are suuuuuuper picky about graphic tees. They have so many rules – must be “legit”, gotta know many of the band’s songs, etc etc – but they both loved Goodfellow & Co’s graphic tees at Target. The color choices that got the nod were, ‘Off-white/Sports’ (very Gray Malin-esque), ‘Off-White/Sun’, and two of surf-inspired ones: ‘Dark Green’ and Fender.

It’s hard to get white, eyelet, empire-waist dresses for women (not kids) juuust right…but this one nails it. The details are perfect, and it’s more pretty than cutesy. 100% cotton, too.

My 1986 self is intrigued. Have you heard of the brand Vacation? Their marketing totally gets me. This Chardonnay Oil SPF 30, in particular, is calling my name, and I love the glowing reviews about moisturized skin. Will I like it more than Glow Screen Body, tho? Hmmmm.

Early Prime Day Deals. Amazon Prime Day is July 11-12, but some deals have started now. One that I’m totally intrigued by is Rent the Runway’s sale. Random stuff, to be sure, but if you’re in the mood to hunt, there are deals like this Kate Spade leopard print puffer (with bow!!) on sale for $67 instead of…wait for it…$448.

Outfit inspo of the week: Patched jeans + silver ballet flats (be sure to click on the ‘blue’ sweater to see the correct reference photo). Those exact jeans are fabulous and still in stock here, but I’d probably just re-create with my FP Moxie jeans. The ballet flats featured I do not recommend, instead I’d go for Sam Edelman’s classic ballet flat (in silver, obvi), or Cole Haan’s York flat (they’re ridiculously comfortable and on sale), or this pair from Ref for something a little different.

Plus size pick. This week’s pick is, quite frankly, an outfit I want mysetlf. Happily, it’s from GANNI, who – unbeknownst to me – started carrying plus sizes! Anyway, these white cargos go up to size 22 (it’s an EU52), and I’d wear them with this seriously cool GANNI tee that goes up to size 4XL. Also, if you haven’t read Kat’s latest article on the 3 best places to shop for plus sizes, it’s one of the best we’ve ever published.

So charming. My kids have always loved play-dough, and this set of wooden play dough tools is the set I was always looking for. Would make such a sweet creative table set-up for summer.

I hate using hair dryers in the summer, so I recently tried R+Co’s Wind pH Perfect Air Dry Creme. It’s fantastic. Gives just enough wind-swept tousle, yet the hair still feels soft.

It’s June, so the weather has been all over the place, but my Rumpl blanket has become my beach-day winner. When the sun’s out, I lay on it (the sand shakes right off), and if it’s cold, I wrap it around myself and plop down on the sand. Either way, it’s perfect.

Bring on the tomatoes. God, I love summer food. And this Tomato Salad with grilled corn, feta, and hazelnuts (gahhhh) is alllll I want to eat right now.

Here’s to a great summer.

  1. OMG! My family has been going to Belmar for my entire life (fond memories of finding needles on the beach as a child in the late 80s) and I cannot believe it made it onto this blog. Other local favorites: Hoffmans (Spring Lake) or Nikki Macciano’s (Lake Como/Belmar) for ice cream, Turnstile Coffee for cold brew/ice lattes or nitro cold brew. Joe’s Surf Shack (South Belmar) has live music and decent food. Huaraches at La Sierra.

  2. Shana I will say hi if I see you on the boardwalk! thanks for introducing me to some new food spots in my own town! Nikki maccanico’s didn’t open yet this year and doesn’t look like it’s going to happen unfortunately!
