Mother’s Day Gift Idea: Cool Mom Jewelry

This used to be an oxymoron, I know.  But mom jewelry has come a long way from the multi-birthstone necklace or a cheesy "World's Greatest Mom" locket.  There are many options for mom jewelry that are just plain cool.  Here are my favorites:

Hot Mama Designs
Hot Mama Designs are cool, timeless and durable.  Mine holds up to repeated yankings by the little man.  All Hot Mama Designs are done in silver, and the necklaces come in either 16" or 18".  You can customize your own necklace or charm bracelet.  My necklace has a medium size disk with Raines' name, a small disk with his birthdate and little dangle with his birthstone – I like how all of the disks hang in a jumble around my neck. 

I also love her initials, and for those of us with a ton of kids (or a Grandmother, perhaps?) I would pick the charm bracelet.   Initials and biirthstones on a charm bracelet – timeless and cool. 

$65 will get you a 16" necklace and one disk.  Additional disks, birthstones, etc will run you about $35 each. To actually get a customized necklace in time for Mother's Day, you need to order by May 1st (TODAY) and choose rush shipping.  Or, just put a picture of one of these in a Hallmark card and let her create her own design. 

Colleen Berg Thumbprints Collection

Colleen Berg creates beautiful, edgy jewelry from thumbprints (or paw prints) taken from your loved ones.  Her work was inspired by the death of her brother – she wanted a way to immortalize his thumbprint for his children.  To create one of these necklaces, she starts with an impression of your loved one's fingerprint and works it into a sterling silver or 22k gold necklace.  If you live in Hermosa Beach, simply stop by the store.  The rest of us can order an impression kit online ($10).  Send in your impressions, choose your design – done.  Her designs are also durable and very kid friendly.  My two favorites are the Single Chunky Print Necklace (pictured above left), $170 and the Fingerprint Lariat Necklace (pictured above right), $150 for one fingerprint, each additional fingerprint is $50. 

You won't be able to get the finished product in time for Mother's Day, but creating the thumbprints is half the fun!  And trust me – these necklaces are so cool, she won't mind waiting.

Jennywear Jewelry Message Cuff Bracelet

The Jennywear Jewelry Message Cuff Bracelet is made out of sterling silver and can be engraved with your custom message on both sides (up to 50 characters each side).  At $49, it's a steal. 

At the risk of sounding sentimental (it is Mother's Day after all…) I like this bracelet engraved with a quote about motherly love on the outside, and the child's name and birthdate on the inside.  Here are some ideas for quotes on the outside of the bracelet:

Select one from that book that makes me cry every time, You Are My I Love You:

"I am your quiet place; you are my wild."

"I am your lullaby; you are my peekaboo."  

or you can change it around to be more gifty: "For my lullaby, from your little peekaboo"

The other sob-fest of a book, Love You Forever, has a great quote also: 

"As long as I'm living my baby you'll be."

If you are looking for a literary quote that didn't come from the children's section, I like Shakespeare's "My heart is ever at your service." or Herman Hesse's "If I know what love is, it is because of you."  (FYI – Herman Hesse was a German poet.)
