Let’s get the basics out of the way: where you live, how many kids, etc.: I live in Marquette, Michigan, right on the coast of Lake Superior. My husband Zack & I have one daughter, Greenlea (pronounced Greenlee) who turned two this past July. We have one dog, Calee, and one cat, Leo.
Three words to describe your personal style. Go.: Cool, comfortable, glam. (Leather, sequins and (faux) fur!)
Who are your style icons? How do you integrate those tastes into your own wardrobe if at all?: Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez. Rihanna can make anything look cool. She doesn’t care what anyone thinks and isn’t afraid to take risks. Jennifer Lopez looks AMAZING in everything and is the quintessential glam girl. (I mean, did you see her open the AMA’s?? Chills.) I use their style for inspiration on how to mix colors and textures, etc. but their makeup is the easiest way to incorporate their style and I have a ton of fun doing that!
How has your personal style changed since becoming a mom?: The biggest change was when I first had G and was nursing. Everything had to be nursing-friendly and postpartum-flattering . . . it was hard to find functional AND flattering pieces. Also heels. I LOVE heels but just can’t run after a toddler in them. It’s not pretty.
What’s your most-worn piece? (If it’s sweatpants…we won’t tell.): My faux fur vest or faux leather jacket. Both go with everything from jeans to dresses and add an element of glam or cool to whatever I’m wearing.
Sometimes it’s hard to gauge height from an Instagram or blog post – SO…how tall are you?: 5’4″
Your top three beauty products?:
1. Concealer: Amazing Cosmetics concealer in medium beige, specifically – a full night’s rest in a tube.
2. False lashes: I apply them about once a week and can go without eyeshadow, mascara or liner. Saves a ton of time in the long run.
3. Brow Pencil – My current favorite is Anastasia’s Brow Wiz. I’ve over-tweezed in the past and am living to regret it. Brows make a huge difference.
What drew you to blogging and when did you start?: I was a high school teacher when I got pregnant. I planned on going back after maternity leave, but once Greenlea was born I couldn’t bring myself to leave her (not to mention the cost of daycare!). Shana suggested I give blogging a try and it was like a dream come true. I get to work with some amazing women (and my sister!) AND talk about beauty and fashion. I love it.
What does a typical day look like? How do you manage time with kids vs blogging (or work)?: I’m lucky enough to have lots of family here. My parents, Zack’s parents and three of his sisters help out with watching Greenlea during the week—I can’t imagine doing it all by myself and give major props to mamas who do! G and I spend our mornings together going to the library or swimming lessons or just running errands and I get most of my work done in the afternoon while someone watches her or at night when Zack is home from work.
After the craziest, worst days we all find salvation in seeing our kids. What’s your favorite thing to do with them to decompress?: G is still young enough to love snuggling and I try to snuggle her as much as possible. I’ll read her books or we’ll watch a movie and share some popcorn. I also love taking her to Target and seeing her run around and get excited about what she sees. “Oh Mama, wook! Wook at dis!” Their excitement is the best.
If you could give only one piece of advice to a timid, new mom (we’ve been there), what would it be?: Don’t compare yourself to others. What works for some might not work for all—we all do the best we can and at the end of the day if your child feels safe and loved then you’re doing a great job. Also, that cliche phrase “time flies?” It does. Enjoy every moment you can. They change SO fast.
What did you dream of being when you were young?: A singer! I’d hold “concerts” in my living room and sing at the top of my lungs to whatever CDs my parents had. I remember trying to catch my favorite songs on the radio so I could record them (on TAPE) and play them over and over . . . Spotify would have made things SO much easier!
What’s one fashion risk you love to see on others but would NEVER take yourself?: Short hair or an undercut. It looks so badass on some women but I’d never have the guts to do it myself!
