Six Fresh Fits for Outdoor Market Season

I’d like to see you TRY to keep a Midwesterner indoors once the nice weather hits — we can’t wait to be outdoors any chance we can get. Outdoor markets are a big thing around here and we have A LOT of ’em. We don’t need a good excuse to find a cute ‘fit to wear, so we’ll grab a coffee and a friend and head out to whatever market we can find happening.

One of my absolute favorite activities whenever I travel is to find an outdoor market and spend the day getting lost in the various stalls. I’ve had some of my best traveling experiences and made some of my most cherished memories at Paris’ infamous flea market and London’s sprawling Camden market. I can’t think of a better way to spend a day than absorbing the local culture, munching on various yummy treats and picking up a lil’ trinket as a souvenir to remember my travels.

What To Wear To An Outdoor Market: Six Fun Looks For Summer

From the farmer’s market to the flea, there are SO many good markets to check out during the spring and summer. So, I’ve come up with six fun looks I’d wear during this year’s vendor season, inspired by some of my favorite markets around the world. Expect some seriously cute tote bags and of course, some Free People and Farm Rio.

Outfit 1: Fulton Street Farmer’s Market

This is the look you’ll catch me wearing to my local farmer’s market: The Fulton Street Market in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I can’t wait for Main Season and Second Season to start every year.

NOTES: It’s necessary to be cute, casual and comfortable so I went for an easy pairing: my beloved Agolde Parker shorts with a longer inseam and this embroidered tee from Abercrombie. I am absolutely obsessed with this market bag made from all recycled plastic materials (it comes in different sizes and colors too) and I just purchased these reusable bags to store my fresh produce in.

Outfit 2: Coquina’s Beachside Market

While I haven’t been to Coquina’s beachside market, my mom and I did stop at the coolest outdoor market in Mexico. Besides the fact that it was beyond HOT out, I also wanted made it a priority to look cute (because if I’m not going to wear this gorgeous Farm Rio dress on vacation, when else am I going to wear it??)

NOTES: I am a huge fan of lace-up espadrilles, I have a similar pair to these Rothy’s espadrilles that have gotten rave reviews and I actually wore mine all vacation long! And brace yourselves…bucket hats are back, baby! I actually really love this denim option from Nordstrom.

Outfit 3: Paris’ Outdoor Flea Market

The few times I have been lucky enough to visit Paris in my life, my dad and I always make a day of going to their outdoor flea market and it is ALWAYS my favorite day.

NOTES: I wore a maxi dress the last time I was there, so if I were going this year, I’d take my favorite dress of the moment: this Free People denim maxi dress, paired it with chic, yet walkable, minimalistic sandals like these strappy Tevas. I’d also take a durable, yet stylish leather tote like this Vince Camuto bag to store all the vintage trinkets I pick up.

Outfit 4: London’s Camden Market

If you’ve had the opportunity to go to London’s famous Camden market, you know that it is a’ busslin’ there. It’s a day well spent soaking in all the sights, sounds and smells.

NOTES: It was extremely busy when I went, so I’d wear something stylish (of course) since the fashion in London is always top-notch. But I also need something comfortable and easy to move in. Pairing this cute denim romper with some classic sneakers is an easy foolproof Camden market outfit.

Outfit 5: Seattle’s Pike’s Place Market

Admittedly it’s been more than a minute since I’ve been to Pike’s Place Market in Seattle. The one thing I remember, besides how cool everyone there was… the distinct smell of fish. To counterbalance the fish flying through the air (do they still throw fish?? I hope so) I’m going for a decidedly classic-chic look.

Summer outfit idea, t-shirt dress and espadrille flats

NOTES: I love the look of Anthropologie’s highly-rated Pollie Swing Tunic Mini Dress (comes in plus-size and seven great color options); it’s a true wardrobe hero. And of course, I absolutely adore these shoes by Sam Edelman and Rag & Bone. They’re like are a combo of two of my favorite types of shoes: espadrilles + ballet-flats.

Outfit 6: The Mitten Vintage Flea Market

Another one of my personal favorite outdoor markets is the Mitten Vintage Flea Market. If I’m not wearing something vintage to this one, then I’m wearing something vintage-inspired.

NOTES: Specifically I’d wear this square-neck eyelet tiered midi dress from Anthropologie and a vintage-inspired woven natural tote by AllSaints. Also, these Havaianas Slim Flip-Flops are pretty much what I wore through high-school and college and technically they could be considered vintage-inspired by the ‘youngins’. *wink*

Until next time,
