Making The Case For: An Oversized Puffer Vest (& How, Exactly, I’m Wearing It Right Now)

I’ve got a confession to make, friends, and it is this: I am, officially, Late To The Trend Of Oversized Puffer Vests.

I know. They’ve been just under my nose for some time now. Our team has sung their praises time and again over the past year or two. My mom hardly goes anywhere without one. (This should’ve been the clue. Her style is timeless and somehow still always on-trend.)

But I held off. I have plenty of vests, I thought. And plenty of oversized puffers. There is nary a wardrobe gap to be filled here.

Silly me.

Since picking up this cozy Helionic Down Vest from adidas, I don't think a morning has passed where I haven't reached for it.

Turns out, an oversized puffer vest is exactly what my wardrobe was missing, and since picking up this cozy Helionic Down Vest from adidas, I don’t think a morning has passed where I haven’t reached for it.

It’s easily the coolest (and yet warmest — eh, ehhhhhhhh…?) way to make any fall outfit feel more current. And from a practicality standpoint, it’s a quick way to add pockets to an otherwise pocketless biker-shorts- or leggings-based ensemble.

Form, Function & Sustainability: adidas’ Oversized Puffer Vest Is As Warm As It Is Cool

And it shouldn’t be a surprise — because adidas is nothing if not intentional when it comes to product design — but this vest is a functional workhorse. It’s got 600-fill down (we’re talking genuinely warm), a water-repellent finish, and oversized zippered pockets that hold all you need.

Plus, the whole thing is at least 60% recycled content. Again, I’d expect nothing less from adidas, but it’s a nice reinforcement of the brand’s commitment to sustainability.

There’s so much to love, aesthetically, about the design of this particular vest too. The smart proportions that make it feel oversized without looking ill-fitting (a good example of this is the not-gaping armholes); the matte finish of that water-repellent outer layer; and the just-right size of the baffle box construction, which gives classic puffer vest vibes without actually being comically puffy.

Not to mention, somehow this puffer vest looks good with almost everything.

It makes sense, of course, paired with leggings or shorts and layered over a tee or a sweatshirt (or both, in my case here — more on that in a minute). But it’s also so very cool over baggy jeans and a tank (if your fall is an extension of summer, like mine), or fully layered up with a long-sleeve tee and lofty cashmere sweater atop wide-legs jeans and boots for when the real chill sets in.

Could it work for the office, even, with trousers, loafers and a tissue turtleneck? I mean, obviously it depends on the formality of your office environment, but I’m inclined to say a strong maybe. And I have an inkling it would actually look pretty dang chic.

How To Style An Oversized Puffer Vest? Minimal Athletic Layers (& Non-Athletic Accessories)

Adidas' oversized puffer vest is exactly what I was missing. It's a functional workhorse, as cool as it is warm, & an easy way to update any fall outfit.

OK, so we’ve waxed poetic about Helionic Down Vest, but the rest of the pieces here need a shout too, because they’re the perfect example of how adidas does simple pieces really, really well.

And, moreover, how the sum of those minimal pieces is somehow even better than you’d expect.

Something about really leaning into athleisure layers up top — and then pairing those layers with accessories that are decidedly un-sporty — makes this outfit feel so much more styled than it otherwise might, despite the fact that it’s seriously easy to wear.

Adicolor Essentials Crew Sweatshirt // The perfect French vanilla-hued sweatshirt for fall with ideal proportions (a little cropped in the length, plenty of length in the sleeves) and a just-oversized-enough fit that’s both cozy and current. Lots more cool colors in this one too. Wearing a small.

Essentials 3-Stripes Bike Shorts // If you’re a bike-shorts person, there’s a good chance you already own these. If you aren’t a bike-shorts person, these are the gateway shorts you never knew you needed. They are, far and away, some of the easiest bike shorts to wear and style. The longer length makes them super-comfy (hi, no chafing), and the sporty striping instantly anchors them as classically cool. Style-wise, they’re very approachable if you think of them more as (very) short leggings versus long shorts. Wearing a small.

Lounge Crop Tee // If you can entertain the idea of a cropped tee, this one cannot be beat. The fabrication is exceptional — thicker than a typical tee, with just enough stretch, and completely opaque. It substantially made, and I love how the weight gives it an almost elevated feel. Really high quality and versatile as heck. Wearing a small.

Spiritain 2000 Shoes // Little bit of a dad-sneaker vibe on these and with a plump, cushy heel that even adds some lift. The perfect way to try chubbier walking sneakers while still embracing those classic three stripes. I’ve worn these with dresses, jeans and all manner of athletic wear these past couple of weeks, and that cheery green striping just boosts my mood, every time. And, of course, these are designed with performance in mind, so they’re genuinely supportive and well-engineered for life on the go. Love the all-gray version too. Size down half.

Who knew a big ol’ vest could be so…good?
Oh, yeah. Everyone and (literally) my mother. Better late than never!

Happy fall, gang.

Big thanks to adidas for sponsoring this post. Adidas has held a prominent spot in my closet for as long as I can recall, and I’m always impressed by the brand’s ability to make even the simplest athletic pieces feel so intentionally designed and just…cool. There’s a reason those three stripes are so iconic. 🙂 And thanks so much for reading along and supporting the brand partners we feel so passionately about. We truly appreciate you.
