5 Fun Outfit Ideas For A Business Casual Office

A few weeks ago, I was hosting an “Ask Me Anything” segment on our TME instagram stories (come join us over there, we have a lot of fun!) and received this question:

I work in a business casual office. How can I dress up for fun without looking like I’m wearing work outfits?

As I took to the internet and began brainstorming, I immediately felt so inspired. I mean, I nearly began applying to office jobs myself.

A few wardrobe pieces immediately came to mind: a fun-and-funky pair of trousers, an oversized blazer, some shoes in a fun pop of color, metallic pants (they’re having a moment) and denim skirts. All wardrobe pieces that feel exciting for everyday life, outside of an office, but that could be easily styled up for a 9-to-5.

5 Ways To Make Your Business Casual Outfits A Little More Fun

The best part about each piece I’m focusing on is that they’re each a twist on a workplace classic.

Metallic pants and funky trousers are the fun cousins of the staple black pants. A denim skirt is a casual alternative to a pencil skirt (and a great way to get away with denim in an office). Oversized blazers are an updated, on-trend way to wear arguably the most classic item in an office setting, and shoes? Well, everyone needs shoes, so we might as well give them a little personality.

Depending on the exact rules of the office you work in, tweaking each inspired look is easy to do. I make notes of simple swaps that can be made for each outfit, showing just how versatile these fun wardrobe pieces really are.

If I worked in an office setting right now, these are a few looks I would be so excited to get out of bed for!

1. Spice Up Your Usual Office Trousers

For an incredibly easy — yet still FUN — way to mix up your work outfits, I recommend spicing up your go-to trousers. Choosing something in a pop of color is certainly not boring, or you could try cargo trousers to be right-on-trend (satin cargo pants, perhaps?!). No matter what you choose, swapping the ol’ faithful black trousers for something fresh this summer will certainly energize your summer work performance (or at least have you looking fabulous)!

Depending on how casual your office actually is, you can play up with the styling of this outfit. Leave the shirt completely untucked, half tucked (my personal fave) or fully tucked in. Switch up the flats to a pair of old-school sneakers, and let the accessories show off your personality.

2. The More Oversized The Blazer, The Better

Say goodbye to your fitted blazer. Not only would I prefer to reach for an oversized blazer silhouette out of pure comfort, but the latest look for this timeless work staple is to go BIG (and if we’re taking note of the fashion It Girls in the office sphere, the key is to go bigger than you think).

Look for blazer styles with the words boyfriend and loose for extra room in the shoulders and waist, but unless you see the actual term oversized in the product name, I would personally size up (one, even two sizes) to get a true oversized fit. This office look feels very much borrowed-from-the-boys, like your date just offered you his coat to drape around your shoulders on the walk home. Even if you’re on the fence with this specific office style, just imagine how much more comfortable you’ll be without that fitted layer.

3. Let Metallic Pants Do All The Work

AGOLDE, MOTHER and FRAME are some of the bigger denim designers to have made the metallic-pant look A Thing this year. They’re now almost impossible to come by (MOTHER has one style currently in stock on its website — run), but Gap came in to save the day by releasing its own version of metallic pants that I can personally attest to being unbelievably fun to wear. Don’t overthink them, dress them like you would any ol’ pair of jeans, and let the pants do all the work.

If a graphic tee doesn’t quite make the cut for appropriate, business casual attire at your office, you can easily swap it out for a solid color tee. You can also simplify the entire outfit (and make it a little more dressy) by pairing the metallic pants with an oversized button-up (leave untucked) and slip into your fave work flats.

4. Freshen It Up With Colorful Shoes

Arguably the easiest way to change up a look is by swapping your shoes, and it’s also the least “risky” if you’re feeling a bit nervous about changing up your classic office attire. Finding your favorite work shoes in a unique color can breathe life into a neutral outfit like you wouldn’t believe. Comfortable flats in a summer blue, or retiring your nude heels for a bold red, could really be the trick in making you feel fresh, fun and put-together in a whole new way.

Colorful shoes look great with any neutral outfit, but I’m especially drawn to these blue flats paired with sailor stripes (and I would personally wear this cardigan instead). This outfit is an amazing choice for summer, and on the days you wake up wishing you were spending your time on the water instead of at your desk, a striped top and clean white jeans will at least have you dressing as if you were headed for the coast.

5. Sneak Some Denim Into The Office

Every workplace has their own rules for jeans, but having your skirt made from denim is a fun way to keep your favorite weekend attire last long into the work week. Midi and maxi skirts are trending in a big way, and midi and maxi denim skirts are everywhere I look.

If you’re loving the idea of a denim maxi skirt but worried about the blue jean version, denim skirts in a black or white wash are a great option, and an easy swap for your neutral trouser outfits. I love the idea of keeping the top fitted or tucked in (you can even half-tuck a loose sweater) and adding a belt. This will keep your outfit feeling on the business side of things, while the denim has you feeling ready for 5 o’clock happy hour.

I think it’s about time I visit the TME Philly office — I’ll be dressed and ready!
