I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m a huge fan of preppy, classic pieces. And a trench coat is one of my very favorites. I’ve been wearing these classic jackets for years, and recently did a full Trench Coat Try-On to see if there were any new stand-outs (my personal favorite is J.Crew’s Icon Trench – it’s so good).
And while my style is typically a mix of neutrals, especially in the winter, come spring, I love to pair these preppy, neutral pieces with fun, bright colors.
Case in point? My classic trench and this Clare V. sweatshirt. I love how the soft, neutral tan pairs beautifully with the bright, kelly green. To top it off, I added these pink sunnies and, I mean, the whole thing just came together in such a fun way.
I’m living for this combo right now.
J.Crew’s Classic Trench, Jeans, & Bright Pops Of Color: A Fresh Outfit Idea For Spring
I picked up this super fun Clare V. sweatshirt on our recent trip to LA. It was so great to go into a brick + mortar of one of my very favorite brands! My 8 year old (very spicy) daughter made friends with the women working there and we both realized she has excellent taste because she wanted all their bags. Haha. Save up, babes.
Visiting in-store meant that I could try on all their fun stuff in person. This was so helpful to narrow down (or attempt to narrow down) all of their cute bags I’ve loved for years.
I landed on the great sweatshirt in my fav color and the leather fanny pack (in a similar stripe here & rainbow snake on sale here!) because another customer had it on and it was the perfect size. It holds more than the Gigi I reviewed recently, but both are adorable on.
I came home and of course it was cooler here in Portland, so I threw my classic trench on top of the bright sweatshirt, added the most beautifully vintage-washed jeans and voila…my new favorite outfit for cool spring days.
This outfit has everything: springy colors, preppy layers, white sneakers and a little edge thanks to the distressing on the jeans. This combo is very me and I feel so comfortable in it. It will be accompanying me to New York this month!
Clare V. Oui Sweatshirt: So fun and it makes me so happy. It’s the graphic sweatshirt I needed in my life right now. I sized up for a little slouch. Wearing a M.
J.Crew New Icon Trench: A fab trench coat with all the classic details AND a detachable hood. A bunch of other options are rounded up in my recent try-on post, as well as more deets on this one I adore. TTS. Wearing a 6.
Moussy Vintage Odsessa Wide Leg: Some of my favorite jeans right now. Moussy have THE best vintage wash IMO. I sized up 1 size here and I love love them. Not too high rise, but not too low.
Adidas Stan Smith Sneakers: So so versatile and classic, these shoes. I wear them all the time for spring and summer. Cute with everything, just like the Superstars.
Quay On The Fly Aviators: SO lovely, these. And under $60. Such a fab spring upgrade.
Clare V. Fanny Pack: I’ve been carrying this for a couple of weeks now and it’s the perfect size. I think my specific stripe is sold out, but here’s a black and white stripe with tan leather option. I have to have a bag big enough for my glasses case and this is!
Chunky Chain Necklace: (similar) I wear this thing all the time right now. I love how it adds some shine and edge to even a plain tee.
I’d love to hear about your favorite spring outfit. This time of year we need to mix it up a little and have fun with what we wear after making it through those winter months. So much is going on that it’s a little way we can lift our spirits some days.
And I know I mentioned it in last week’s Sales Report, but I think everyone should meet with Julieta for a color consultation. It was so eye-opening and fun. I found out I look best in light colors and slightly warmer shades, but she gives great tips for wearing any colors you want, too!
Here’s to the life-giving that spring brings, my friends.
Would love for you to say hi over on my Instagram @laurajansenstyle where there are mostly odes to snacks, OOTDs, and everyday mom life stuff in Portland, Oregon. xoxo
