Got A White Shirt & Jeans? 5 Ways to Wear This Classic Combo (Nursing-Friendly, Too)

Gang, I nursed for so freaking long that I couldn’t look at another v-neck tee, cardigan, or button-down shirt for…years. It’s been all crewnecks and turtlenecks ever since. But the classic button-down (button-up?) shirt is making such a comeback that I find myself giving it another look.

Amy has been rocking one on the regular — her latest Coastal Grandmother-inspired outfit is the most recent example — and she featured her favorite button-downs in a video last summer (there were six, Gang. SIX.). I *did* (sort of) try a button-up…if we’re including shackets here…but shackets don’t have the same vibe as a classic button-up shirt.

5 Nursing-Friendly Ways to Rock A White Button-Up & Jeans

The vibe, I think, that I’m looking for is a little less preppy than Coastal Grandmother. I’m finding that aesthetic a bit hard to pull off – I end up feeling a little too the part. Instead, I’m going for…nonchalant French girl. I’m thinking I want a look that’s a little undone — messy hair, untucked shirt, straight-leg jeans. Maybe with some dark eyeliner one day, or a bit of a lip stain the next. And the key to keeping this look fresh?

Really cool accessories.

The Best White Button-Up Shirts

My personal fave is The Eileen, a white linen button-up from Frank & Eileen. It’s the slouch and perfect, almost-sexy button placement for me.

But…it’s pricey. So here are a few other white button-up shirts that come highly recommended.

As I was pulling these looks together, I realized that not only would I be thrilled to wear these outfits now…but they also would’ve been right up my alley when I was a new mom, too. There one thing that hasn’t changed in all of these years is the fact that I still want to wear comfortable (and cute) shoes. Plus, since Em’s recent Artipoppe review (I totally agree, that carrier is an “accessory worth getting knocked up for” HAHAHA), I got lost in the rabbit hole of gorgeous baby carriers, anyway, and they were top of mind. I can’t freaking BELIEVE how far they’ve come. So, voilà: 5 white button-up looks for new moms (or everyone).

Outfit Idea 1: Punk-Rock Balletcore

Ballet flats, but make them punk. While the bra featured is specifically a nursing bra, the diaper bag that says, “FAMILY BAG” I would 110% still carry — or make the boys carry — as a giant tote, even though nobody around here needs diapers anymore. This might be my beach bag this year.

Also, don’t hate me over the price of that particular Artipoppe carrier. It’s ridiculously gorgeous and too fun not to drool over. (Get it? Drool?? HA.)

Outfit Idea 2: Elevated Neutrals

Shades of beige with arguably two of the *most* timeless pieces that exist: Birkenstocks and straw bags. I’d probably finish this look off with a gold paperclip necklace (from one of our fave Black-owned businesses, Gwen Beloti).

Outfit Idea 3: A Little Bit Sporty

I’ve been eyeing up these blush-pink Converse for weeks now. This is one outfit where I’d add smudgy, smokey eyes.

And again: can’t get enough of the ‘FAMILY BAG’. I stand behind that gender-neutral message 1000%.

Outfit Idea 4: Downtown Mama

Can we talk about this fisherman’s tote???? It’s made from neoprene and WOW. Perfect for travel, unique and cool. Also available in navy, gold, and rainbow, if you’re interested.

PS. This is the kind of nursing bra I wore the most often.

Outfit Idea 5: Classic Prep

Readers have sworn by these Longchamp Le Pilage totes for years. They’ve used them as diaper bags, work bags, and travel bags. I’ve been eyeing up the usual colors, but haven’t yet pulled the trigger. This orange one, though, feels exciting, especially with my usual tan sandals. I’d slick on this coral lip oil and add these gold hoop earrings.

This outfit makes me nostalgic. I was an Ergo-user, back in the day, and also wore these exact same sandals. They’re great for making boring outfits more interesting and they’re shockingly comfy, too. How funny that they’re back.

Last note: Negative Underwear (a team fave) started carrying nursing bras. High hopes.
