The ’90s are back, baby, and I. Am. Here for it. Give me all the ’90s trends from back in the day: chunky shoes, relaxed denim, dark lipstick….I love it all.
But this time, I’ll be wearing ’90s style in a less-grungy, more-sophisticated way.
A ’90s-Style Outfit For Now: Straight Leg Jeans, Leather Jacket & Platform Boots (+ A Sleek Top)
Instead of layering an oversized plaid shirt over baggy jeans like I used to (I usually wore my dad’s — his plaid shirts and jeans, that is), I’ll be pairing a sleek top or bodysuit with high-rise straight-leg jeans to show off some curves. Top it all off with a leather moto, platform boots (I LOVE these platform Chelsea boots) and dark lipstick, and I feel like could fit right in with the cast of Empire Records. (Because they’re older now, too.) 😂
The Relaxed Fit Straight Leg Jeans
These ’90s High Waist Relaxed Jeans from Good American are probably my favorite pair right now. They’re kind of a breath of fresh air from all of the skinny fits they make, and I love that they’re not cropped. They fit at the waist (which helps define it, true to Good American’s general style) but then fall straight down in a relaxed, slightly loose fit. I love that they’re made from “rigid-look” denim; so although they may look rigid, they’re actually super-soft (thanks to the 38% lyocell, a sustainable fabric!) even though they’re not stretchy.
Lip Color In A Darker Shade Of Red
Also, we have to talk about this lipstick — it’s been a favorite for years (I first shared it with you guys in 2016!). It’s Anastasia’s Liquid Lipstick in Heathers and it’s a such a good darker red; perfect for fall. Once applied it stays on (I kissed Ozzie’s head before I left to take these pics without getting any marks on him), but can be difficult to apply around the edges using the wand. I use a lip brush that’s much easier!
Sleek Tops, Perfect For Layering
So this shirt from Zella is 100% sheer. I layered it over one of my favorite camis here, but I’m also looking forward to layering it under everything from graphic tees to sweaters and even vests this fall and winter. I love how long the sleeves are and how they peek out from underneath top layers.
jeans – Good American ’90s Jeans, my favorite Good American pair right now. Waist-defining but perfectly relaxed and super soft. (I wore these tights underneath for extra warmth when the weather gets colder.)
belt – Ada ‘Cala’ Studded Skinny Leather Belt – If you only ever buy one belt, this is it. The snaps mean you can wear it as tight or as loose as you want and I love the studded look. (Also in brown!)
boots – Vagabond Shoemakers Chelsea Boots – These are awesome platform boots. My favorite part is the higher shaft – over 9 inches. They keep going in and out of stock, but it’s worth checking back if you love them as much as I do! (I rounded up some similar boots below.)
top – Zella Sheer Mesh Long Sleeve T-Shirt – Such a good layering piece and super comfortable!
cami – Hanro Cami – I’ve had this for years (I actually stole it from Shana years ago) and love it. I can’t believe how well it’s held up through a TON of use.
jacket – Biker Jacket – I tried this one on in store and immediately fell in love. It comes in other colors, but the black is just so classic. (I do love that green though!)
