Athleta’s Exercise Dress Is Cute Enough For Everyday

Growing up, the most important stand you could take was which Spice Girl you identified as.

I? Was Sporty Spice.

Not because I was particularly sporty (or sporty at all) but damn, did I ever want to pull off a flip the way Mel C. did in that “Wannabe” music video.

Although I’m long past the point of “spicing up my life,” and I’m definitely not attempting a flip ever, I still love a sporty athleisure look. I’ve been on the hunt for a few months now to find an “exercise” dress (quotations are important here because, while some dresses may be designed for physical endurance, that is not why I am wearing said dress.)

My reqs for an activewear dress: built-in shorts, a built-in bra (OR the ability to wear a normal bra), moisture-wicking material & of course, pockets. The Athleta Expedition Dress checks ALL these boxes, plus the color is fab.

After trying a few dresses that weren’t quite it, TME reader Shelly suggested I try Athleta’s Expedition Dress.

Thank God for Shelly, because Athleta’s version of an active dress is it.

I have a few requirements when it comes to an activewear dress: built-in shorts, a built-in bra (OR the ability to wear a normal bra), moisture-wicking material, and, of course, pockets.

The Athleta Expedition Dress checks ALL these boxes, plus the color is fabulous. Flame Orange is an aptly named color for this dress and manages to complement my skin tone without washing me out. It just feels spring and summer ready.

Plus, the dress has sun protection (UPF 50), is wrinkle resistant and made out of a quick-drying, recycled nylon fabric. Athleta suggests one can hike, climb, or “explore the trail” in this dress.

I, too, am doing a little exploring. Of a creek, technically speaking. Cherry Creek. This dress is versatile like that.

Sizing notes: The fit is pretty TTS. Just for reference, I am 5’7, short-waisted, long legs, broad shoulders. In Athleta clothing I tend to fit in an 8-10 or medium. I ordered this dress in an 8 and it fits perfectly. This dress is available in three different colors, and is available in plus sizes, too.

Can I safely chase my toddler, run errands and stay cool while doing so in Athleta's Expedition Dress? You bet.

Will I be hiking fourteeners in this dress? Probably not, but I COULD if I wanted to. Can I safely chase my toddler, run errands and stay cool while doing so in Athleta’s Expedition Dress? You bet.

It’s not “too much of something.” It’s just right.

    • I am OBSESSED with that show. This is maybe the best compliment ever. The zipper goes down to the waistline making it easier to get in and out of 🙂

  1. Just confirming–you say in the description that you like a built-in bra or the option of wearing a regular bra–this dress doesn’t have a built-in bra, right? (I’m too busty for a built-in bra…)

    • Hey! So this dress does not have a built-in bra and you can definitely wear it with a normal bra, as I am in the photos! Hope that helps 🙂

  2. How does one…… um… go to the bathroom in this dress? I’m confused. Do you have to pull the whole thing down, like a romper?

    • Yes you would have to pull the whole thing down. But it’s not a long dress, so it would be somewhat easier than a full-length jumper. I know people are very divided on the pulling off all your clothes for the restroom issue LOL. It would be cool if the shorts snapped like a onesie so you could just undo it. Maybe need to pitch that to Athleta lol
