5 Classic Pieces In My Forever Closet

I’m at the point in my life and career where I want some reliable, go-to outfits. Looks I know I can pull together at a moment’s notice and pieces I can rely on to be timeless and effortless. I recently tried out some new pieces from Everlane (these black pants & these chelsea boots) and they easily paired with a few classic pieces from my closet I already loved.

The result? A great outfit that feels polished but comfy, chic but not fussy. I’d love to build a whole section of my closet centered around this vibe.

It’s Not A Capsule, But These 5 Classic Pieces Are In My Forever Wardrobe.

Think: Travel, Office, Lunch Dates & Beyond

I really adore an outfit that can go anywhere I need it to in the daytime. From a casual office, to travel, to a lunch date to everyday errands to a meeting…I call that useful. I start with pants that are comfy but not jeans or sweats, a shirt that’s structured but also not annoying to wear all day, then I top it all off with a great coat and a structured bag…and voilà! Now let’s get into the five forever closet pieces that I love…

1. A Camel Coat

I’ve recently gone on and on about how much I love and rely on my camel coat to pull my outfits together. It’s a beautiful, neutral shade that I’ve found works over everything. I love that it adds some structure to even my most casual athleisure outfits but goes equally well over jeans, dresses, or pant looks.

My coat is unlined and sadly sold out long ago, but the lighter weight of it is something I adore. It makes it wearable for more of the year, especially in our temperate climate in the Northwest. Since the exact coat is sold out, I’ve rounded up a couple of similar options below.

2. These Black Chelsea Boots

I have spent forever searching for a great pair of comfy black Chelsea boots, and I’ve finally found it. These Everlane boots are comfortable out of the box, classic but not boring (that gum sole is so cool), and well-made. I think the lighter sole makes them feel less heavy on my frame and adds a bit of interest, too. They fit true to size and come in a lovely, outfit-making ivory, also.

3. A Pair Of Versatile Black Pants

I’ve been searching for a pair of black pants like this for a long time. I’m not really a dressy leggings or ponte pants kinda gal, and true trousers just never seem to fit me right in the rise or the butt or the length. That being said, many pull-on style pants are also way too long in the rise, but not the Dream Pant from Everlane.

Somehow, these pants are just right on my not-that-short 5’4″ self. They are thick enough to lay nicely (but not too thick) and super soft, have pockets, have a chic lengthening seam down the front, and fit my booty and thighs (another issue I have with this style pant.) I cannot tell you how nice it is not to have to hem the darn things, too. They really are a dream AND under $80! And can easily be worn with sneakers, sandals, boots or heels. I’ll probably style them up a few different ways soon!

4. A Classic Button Down

I raved about the white version of this Alex Mill x Cup of Jo blouse last year as the only one that fit but didn’t gape at the bust on me AND had long lovely cuffs. Yep, loved it so much I bought it twice. The blue with the pinstripe is a great alternative to the solid white and I love it with black and camel. Wearing my true size 6.

5. A Structured Bag (We Love Clare V!)

The bags I am here for right now are the structured crossbody styles that add some polish and/or pop to any outfit. We talk about Clare V bags a lot around here, and for good reason. They are so well-made and fun, versatile in style with interchangeable strap options and just unlike many others on the market IMO.

This is the Gigi I have below, and it’s still available in a few adorable solid colors. But I also have and love the Midi Sac style and have been eyeing the Mirabel that is slightly larger with a cute top handle. Ooh, and maybe I’ll combine that with the checkered woven strap here for some fun! See? Polished and classic but not boring. LOVE.

And if you are looking for something similar in shape at a lower price point, I tried out the ivory Quince crossbody recently and popped a fun strap on that. Some of the colors don’t look very high-end to me, but the ivory is great! And it too has a little more room than the Clare V. Gigi style.

I’d love to hear if you have found any forever closet pieces recently you’d put in a similar category. These clothes that take the guesswork and stress out of packing and getting dressed are really worth the time and effort.

I can’t wait to build up the energy to really cull my whole closet to be this hardworking. A few trendy pieces are super fun, especially for this Aquarius who adores a costume moment, but classic items are really the work horses of our wardrobes, eh? I’ll keep ya posted on my ongoing search for this stuff! Until next time…

    • Oh no how did I forget to mention sizing haha. I’m wearing a Small in the pants. I’m typically a Small or size 6 in pants if that helps. I think I’m a 39ish hip size and these fit without pulling, which is the issue I do have on many pull-on style pants.

  1. Warm, cozy and comfortable. Perfect for this time of year, with nice cheerful color combinations, and not at all overthe top red like I have been seeing on the streets lately. (Maybe for the lunar New Year)
I like to add a scarf into the forever category and sunglasses. After years of too much sun, I am finally paying attention to the skin on my chest and neck and eye wrinkles. I guess for now, the feeling is to be safe and protected but still fashionable while venturing outside.
