This is the time of year I think many of us want a fresh start. In our homes, in our plans, and in our closets. Since this year still holds some uncertainty, a fresh look at our clothing is a great place to feel in control.
My sister-in-law recently mentioned that she wants to update her wardrobe and she was inspired by a neutral palette. This took me down the rabbit hole of rad neutral pieces that work together into a casual capsule wardrobe, and here we are! Gosh, if I could re-do most of my closet to be this right now, I would.
Maybe these pieces will inspire you to add a few in and go through your current favorite outfits to come up with fun new combos. It’s spurring me on to do that myself!
The Neutral Capsule Wardrobe I Want To Wear All Winter
While I’ve admitted to not being a minimalist and being unable to succeed with a capsule wardrobe, I’m totally inspired to start thinking along these lines, especially this year. Like I mentioned, I think it’d be fun to pull some favorites from my already-somewhat-neutral closet, add in a few of these pieces and see what I can come up with for new go-to looks.
Neutral Capsule Outfit 1
01 | Madewell Cameron Ribbed Cardigan (also at Shopbop): Ooh, is a sexy grandpa cardigan a thing? Haha. This is so pretty and cozy. I chose a lot of Madewell this time around because they just have the most gorgeous soft colors right now.
03 | Madewell Perfect Vintage Jean: Love, love, love this wash! Need to try. I’ve had much luck with Madewell jeans over the years, especially their skinny jeans, but the distressing on these are perfect!
04 | Lacoste White Watch: This is just a fresh modern pop with neutral shades that adds a touch of sportiness. Love.
05 | Bracelet Trio: So convenient. They come together! So feminine and adds that bit of shine I’m realizing just finishes off a look.
06 | Kickoff Trainer: These are so supportive and comfy. And I love the neutral shades paired with the really sporty sneaker. So good right now.

01 | Free People Dolman Quilted Denim Jacket: I’m a huge fan of quilted jackets right now. They’re soft and cozy and rad and on-trend. Love this over sweats for a puffy but stylish-comfy look!
05 | Abercrombie Sweatpants: Their sweats are somehow the softest! Check sizing and perhaps size up. Some fleece joggers I recently tried were more fitted than I wanted, and I think the look right now is to have them a little oversized and cozy.
06 | GAP Balloon Sleeve Sweatshirt: Love the subtle dyeing on this for a little texture!
07 | Vans Classic Slip-ons (unisex sizing): Classic cool-girl sneaks that add that little bit of graphic pop I adore.
Neutral Capsule Outfit 3
03 | MantraBand I Love You To The Moon & Back bracelet: Oh, I do love this! So, so cute. And on sale!
04 | Madewell Striped Sweater Coat: This. A statement cardi coat is all I want to wear right now! This one is bold without being busy, hard to wear, or over the top.
05 | Everlane The Put-Together Easy Pants: These are on their way to me! I love how they look nice enough for the office but also sporty-casual…my fav style.
06 | Daydreamer Classic Smile Tee: It wouldn’t be a post by me without a graphic tee. This one is adorable — still neutral but adds a little pop and is currently on sale!
07 | Birkenstock Sherpa Lined Slipper: I think I’ll forever have a pair of these now, every winter. Gosh they’re cozy! I even like them with socks. So comfy. Or swap these out with this outfit for the ivory Chuck Taylors on the pants model. Love that look!
Neutral Capsule Outfit 4
02 | Free People Betty LS Tee: I feel like I really need this tee…it has all the perfect tee things…soft fabric, long cozy sleeves and a flattering scoop/v neck. Yes.
03 | Lacoste White Watch
04 | Dr Martens Leona Boots: I pulled these in as a winter option here, but you could easily swap out any of the other capsule shoes here!
05 | Madewell Coin Layered Necklace: Another Madewell jewelry fav. I have and love these. They are separate so you can mix and match. These just totally ‘make’ a v or scoop neck tee outfit complete!
06 | Free People Sabrina Jeans: I couldn’t, in my right mind, leave faded black jeans out of any neutral capsule wardrobe I’m creating. Black jeans are just absolutely my fav. These seem to be selling as I’ve written this article, but my go-to Madewell skinny jeans are a great alternative! TTS and great stretch, flattering pockets.
Shop A Casual, Neutral Capsule Wardrobe
I have got to get my closet in order and perhaps rebuild it to better suit my needs. This post has inspired me to do a clean out and arrange a few items into a neutral capsule like this, so I can then see what pieces I want to add in. Any tips on organizing jeans and sweaters and sweatshirts…please send them along! I try to fold them and they end up shoved into the shelves in a matter of days. Heh. Here’s to a cozy winter though, friends. And to making things easier and less, just less in 2021.
Would love to have you follow all my daily musings, donut pics and dance parties over on Instagram @laurajansenstyle. I try to keep it real over there, with a side of fun and a good dose of social justice.
P.S. This one’s for the pinners…
