Still Trending: Quarter-Zip Sweatshirts

Quarter-zip sweaters and sweatshirts became hot and heavy in fashion early last year. Of course, it wasn’t a brand-new concept (that’s hard to do in fashion these days), but because they seemed to show up everywhere all at once, I specifically remember wondering if the style was simply a microtrend, or if quarter-zip tops would work their way into the forefront of retail for the long run.

Fast-forward to now, the end of 2022, and quarter-zips are, in fact, still showing up seemingly everywhere.

This Quarter-Zip Sweatshirt Completes My Undone, Casual Winter Looks

It feels as though I’ve tried on a thousand quarter-zip sweaters (and half-zips too) over the past two years. There’s been a few I’ve loved, a lot of “meh” sweaters, and one or two quarter-zips that truly understood the assignment.

The one I can’t get enough of right now? This delightfully drapey, oversized Down-To-Earth Quarter-Zip Sweatshirt from aerie.

The weight of the aerie quarter-zip sweatshirt is light, feeling like that perfectly worn-in sweatshirt you stole from your dad (that he wore in college).

Online, the aerie sweatshirt looks good — but nothing special. I scrolled right past the first time I saw it and continued to scroll past it all late summer and early fall long.

But then, Christmas began getting closer, and something always comes over me during the holiday season. I find myself wanting to buy everything in shades of bright red and green. I was putting in an order with aerie anyway, so I figured there was no harm in trying out the perfect shade of Green Alpine in the Down-To-Earth Quarter-Zip.

The fit of aerie's quarter-zip sweatshirt is dramatically oversized, which as you probably already know, is JUST how I like it.

This sweatshirt is one of those tops that actually caused me to yell out an “OH, YEAH” as I was throwing it over my head the first time. I immediately knew it was good before even looking in the mirror.

*Sigh,* don’t you love when that happens?

1 of the standout factors of aerie's quarter-zip for me is that it's sweatshirt material instead of a textured knit.

One of the standout factors for me is that this particular quarter-zip is sweatshirt material instead of a textured knit. I’ve tried a few other sweatshirt versions (this half-zip from Varley being my first love), but the balance of weight and drape of the Down-To-Earth Quarter-Zip is what I’m seeking to wear most often.

Once reserved for a more preppy uniform, quarter-zips are now just the tops I love to complete the perfect undone, casual look. I’ll throw on my fave loose jeans and shearling-lined Birks for a coastal-grandmother aesthetic, or keep it lounge-worthy with my fave sweats (which I’ll be doing all winter long).
