Channeling My Inner Blanche with this 3-Piece Matching Set

It’s no secret that I can be a little over the top. (I’m still dying over one of my first posts — a sequin mini dress and faux fur stole, complete with 4″ platform pumps, that was “perfect for postpartum.” 😂 You early readers must have thought I was crazy!) But as I get older, it’s so much fun to just embrace it rather than try to fight it.

Channeling Blanche Devereaux In This Floral Matching Set

At our latest meeting I tried this 3-piece matching set on for the TME ladies. “Is this too much?” I asked. Em was like, “It’s very Blanche Devereaux,” but she meant that in the best way possible, of course. I mean if I had to pick a Golden Girl, it would be Blanche —100%.

Life is short. Embrace your inner Blanche!

The 3-Piece Matching Set Styled Countless Ways

I first fell in love with this pattern. And although I loved all three pieces together, my initial intention wasn’t actually to wear them all together, and I ultimately kept them because each can be worn a number of different ways. Here are a few ideas…

How I’m Wearing Volcom’s ‘Surfbird’ Floral Duster

I love dusters. They’re so versatile. I’ve been wearing them with jeans, with high-rise pants, and I love the way they look with distressed denim shorts. I’d dress down this exact outfit with a graphic tee and sneakers.

Dusters also work as easy cover-ups. This one is super-soft, made from 100% modal, and is washer and dryer friendly. I think this would probably look better with black flip flops, but the Birkenstocks are just so comfy (and waterproof)!

This is the exact type of cami I like to wear in the summer. Loose and lightweight with adjustable straps in a fun pattern that can be dressed up or down. I love the ’70s vibe I get when pairing it with high-rise flares like Good American’s Palazzo jeans (a TME favorite) and wedges.

The cami works great with cropped jeans as well. I love these soft relaxed white jeans from Everlane — it’s so hard to find good white jeans that are cute and not see-through, but these are perfect. Of course, I know I’ll be wearing it with my cropped Levi’s and denim shorts as well. The possibilities are literally endless.

These were a little bit harder for me. They’re a higher rise than I typically would wear in shorts that aren’t denim – they, ahem, move with my behind quite a bit when I walk…but my husband LOVED them. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I wanted to make sure I could wear them outside of the matching set and they easily go with denim jackets (of course), sweatshirts, and my favorite beach sweaters. And they’re perfect for a beach cover-up — with or without the duster! 😂

I love mixing the patterns of the Vans and the floral shorts; these Vans are definitely one of my most-worn pairs of sneakers in the summer (and Zack may or may not have a matching pair…and Shana…and Laura for that matter 😂). I’m doing a review of this half-zip sweatshirt from BP soon (it has matching shorts!), but suffice it to say, I love it! (Also, “fleece” isn’t really how I’d describe it…it’s a lighter fabric made from 100% organic cotton that’s perfect for summer.)

Of course just the cami and shorts look good together! I love that it has the same type of look as a dress or romper but in separates. If you’re not much of a duster person, a soft moto like this one works for a look that’s a little less Golden Girl. Oh, and help me decide about these slides! I’ve always wanted a long-leg look and think these do a pretty good job of getting it, but I’m not sure about that material. The heel isn’t too high (2.5″), though, and they stay on really well. Reviewers love them, but I just don’t know if my feet would swell and then get marks on them…thoughts?

  1. I love that you are featuring these shorts. I’m on the hunt this summer for shorts that are not denim and not athletic…Thanks!

  2. OMG, I have so many thoughts about this post…

    1) I had not yet discovered TME when you posted on the sequin dress. But OMG that dress was RAD. For nursing? With scratchy sequins and a fur stole flopping all over the place? Maybe not, but it looked amazing on you and I hope you still have it. (BtW One of your posts on sequin leggings and minis for the holidays totally cemented my love for TME.)

    2) if I were a Golden Girl I would be a cross between Dorothy with her irritated sarcasm and Sophia with her lack of filter. (I am fun at parties.)

    3) I love the boho look, always have. 70s child right here. But I struggle with the ruana/wrap/cover-up, because it easily skews either “22 year old at Coachella” or “senior citizen on a cruise”. Finding the sweet spot in between is hard. Well done.

    4) in the pilot of Golden Girls Rue McClanahan was 51! And Blanche was supposed to be 53! I have many thoughts about how aging and the perception of aging has changed in the last 35 years. Like, my first instinct when I learned that was “damn, 50 really is the new 40! Women age so much better now!” (For reference Jennifer Aniston is 52 this year.) BUT, maaaybe it also has to do with the increasing overvaluing of youth and the expectation that a woman remain young looking if she wants or needs to remain attractive/visible/culturally relevant. Like, wouldn’t it be nice if nobody cared if we got wrinkly and gray and wore mumus and ate cheesecake all day, if nobody judged us for wearing jeans that the teenagers declare “cheugy” (I mean, are we really paying attention to people who use the word “cheugy”???) or expected us to have the same waist size and dewy skin of an 18 year old? These are the things I struggle with as I try to decide how to approach the weight I’ve put on since January, whether to let the gray grow in, and how much money am I willing to spend on my skin care routine.

    Anyway….

    Also, checkerboard Vans 4 Ever!!!!

    • OMG I love this comment so much…and you sent me down the rabbit hole with Rue McClanahan and I started reading her book “My First Five Husbands & the Ones Who Got Away” 😂 (link: https://amzn.to/3uf0Zyz) 51 is crazy young!

Also, I DID end up nursing in that dress and I do still have it! I had so much fun with it I can’t part with it – the stole and shoes are another story, though.

Also – sequin leggings, minis AND checkerboard Vans 4 Ever!!! ❤️

Thank you for the awesome comment!

  3. OMG. I’m older than the Golden Girls?!?!?!?!? Welp. Here’s my thoughts on that: We’ve got only 2 choices. Age…or don’t. I choose aging! (But i don’t have to show it!!!) Cheers to birthdays! Will turn 57 in 2 weeks…and there WILL be champagne! (OK if one is being totally honest….super expensive tequila. I’ve earned it!) Oh and Scotti….You do Blanche proud! I love your glitz 😉
