I love to create interesting yet unexpected combos with my outfits. Whether it’s mixing neutrals with pops of color, or pulling together a look with pieces that are high and low in price, I’m always experimenting with style.
Recently, I pulled together some great pieces under $200 from Nordstrom — like this Open Edit sweater, these Levi’s 501 jeans (always a favorite), Sam Edelman’s d’Orsay pump, and this classic Topshop coat.
Experimenting With Style: A Classic Outfit Idea + A Bit of Edge
But beyond those hardworking, affordable basics, I love to spend a little more on accessories that make a real statement. Higher-end accessories can elevate your look AND be repeatedly worn with a variety of outfits. They’re such a worthwhile investment in my book. Here I chose a silk scarf from Alexander McQueen and a really adorable, structured Coach bag.
And when you put it all together, you get a classic look…with a little edge. (Just how I like it.)

The Coat: Topshop Herringbone Double-Breasted Coat
I’ve been searching for a great herringbone coat for a few months now, and I’m in love with this double-breasted coat from Topshop. It’s warm, classic, comfy and stylish — but at a great price point too. Sizing is TTS. I went with a medium so I could layer a sweater underneath, and it’s perfect.

The Scarf: Alexander McQueen Skull Silk Scarf
This silk skull scarf from Alexander McQueen is such a great statement piece that’s wearable year-round. It’s definitely been on my wish list for a long time, friends. I love the edginess it adds to the classic herringbone coat and the Coach tote bag.
And the black-and-white pattern is a fresh pop against the brown coat. A superb gift for any fellow McQueen fans on your list.
The Bag: Coach Willow Leather Tote
OH, this cutie…I love this little tote bag from Coach! I knew I wanted a structured black bag to top off this outfit, and the Willow tote is just the perfect little complement. It holds everything I need without being an endless pit to lose it all in.
It’s adorable worn on the arm like a fancy lady, but it also comes with a helpful crossbody strap. It’s got a divided inner section and center zip pocket. Coach’s designers always think of all the details in these really classic bags. This is one that won’t go out of style, either, and I love the subtle “C” logo on the closure. Fab.
The Shoes: Sam Edelman Viv d’Orsay Pointed-Toe Heels
I’m definitely someone who believes that the shoes make the outfit, and this look illustrates just that! Shana and I were perusing Nordstrom’s site together and landed on these really great pointed-toe heels from Sam Edelman that come in some beautiful shades. The pop of blue with the brown herringbone coat? I love, love it, and the blue is even more luxe in person.
These heels are surprisingly comfy too! For someone who rarely wears a heel but loves a d’Orsay, these are a true new favorite. I’m stoked to have these in my lineup now. TTS and comfy out of the box.
The Sweater: Open Edit Half-Zip Cotton-Blend Rib Sweater
You may recognize this pretty deep-green half-zip sweater from some of my recent posts. I love, love this cotton-blend option, and the collar moment is just fab and what I live for.
I’m wearing a small here and the fit is great…just cropped enough to be perfect with high-rise denim.

And speaking of denim, I didn’t highlight the Levi’s 501 straight-leg jeans simply because I’ve covered them so much, but they’re my favorite black jeans right now! Wearing a 29.

I hope this has helped provide a little inspo to mix-it-up, play with color and play with genres when you’re getting dressed this winter. For a warmer option with a similar vibe, a fun boot in a pretty dark color would be great here. Perhaps a burgundy boot like these mixed with a teal sweater like this one. Oooh, I’m seeing it! Or that same sweater in the lavender shade with the burgundy boots, too. I could do this all day lol.
Let me know what pops of color you’re pairing with your neutrals this winter. It’s a fun way to brighten them up a bit for a change of pace.
Until next time…

L
