Are you, too, on a revenge journey and fashion is the elusive leopard shark that ate your former bestie? If so, then consider the coverall jumpsuit your tiny submarine pod filled with your current entourage of misfits on your quest to life beyond retribution.

Haha maybe that makes no sense to you, and you’re just here for the easy outfit ideas – that’s fair. But if you did get my reference…you are my people.

In any case, you don’t need to be a Wes Andersen fan to appreciate a good one-and-done piece like these coveralls. (Psst: Also available at Nordstrom, in gray, or try Free People, with even more colors.)

An Ode to Coveralls & Wes Andersen: Where to Buy, How To Style

For my 40th birthday a few years ago, I asked all my friends to dress up as their favorite character from a Wes Andersen film. We held it in a Victorian bar-turned-house that definitely had Tenenbaums vibes. So fun. My love for these quirky, creative films with stunning sets and attention to detail runs deep. If you don’t follow @accidentallywesanderson on IG it’s a must for us fans.

Where To Find The Best Coveralls

While these coveralls (aka an “union suit” from Lee Jeans) are my top pick (sooo soft and comfy), there’s actually a ton to choose from this season. I’ve rounded up a few of my favorites, below. Madewell has always been one of the first places I stop for a jumpsuit or coveralls, but Free People, Nordstrom & Alex Mill also have some great options!

Four Outfit Ideas With Coveralls

Coveralls & jumpsuits have always been my jam and they’re just such an easy way to get dressed. But, even with the “one & done” idea, they can sometimes be tricky to style in a variety of ways, so I’ve broken down a few of my (non-movie-inspired) favorites for ya here.

1 | With A Quilted Jacket + Cowboy Boots

If you’re not into channeling your favorite film when heading out, might I suggest this combo. Btw, this quilted jacket is the softest thing ever. And I’m currently digging my short cowboy boots SO much (see more here.)

2 | With A Trench Coat + Loafers

I’m all about a trench coat right now…a raincoat that actually looks good is definitely the sweet spot for this Pacific Northwest gal. Tan and light washed denim will always be a gorgeous color combo. I like mixing preppy and sporty pieces together so much!

3 | With A Striped Tee + Mules

I love breaking up the full color of a jumpsuit with another piece tied at the waist. For this outfit, I tied a springy navy and white striped tee around my waist.

Depending on your temps, swap in a Birkenstock sandal for the mule or perhaps a pointed toe mule to make it feel a little more polished. But, this is an easy combo that can translate to any solid jumpsuit or coveralls you have.

4 | With A Fun Crossbody

And last but not least, use a bag in a print or contrasting color (worn crossbody style) to break up the solid color factor going on here. Some of our favorite’s are from Clare V. Mine is older, but they have super fun strap options you can swap in for most of their bags. LOVE.

I want to continue coming up with actually wearable outfits inspired by Wes Andersen characters…but I haven’t landed on my next one yet. I sure am a big Max Fischer fan though…he saved Latin after all…

And because I want to, I’ll leave you with some favorite quotes from my inspiration above. I can never decide which film is my favorite, but The Life Aquatic is definitely up there!

  • Steve Zissou: Where’d you come from? You look pregnant.
  • Jane Winslett-Richardson: I am pregnant. I’m not even going to ask what you men are doing out here in your matching pajamas, by the way.

Steve ZissouDon’t point that gun at him, he’s an unpaid intern.

  • Steve Zissou: You know I’m not big on apologizing. So I’ll just skip it if it’s all the same to you.
  • Eleanor Zissou: Okay.
  • Steve Zissou: Anyway, I’m sorry.

Jane Winslett-Richardson: Are we – are we safe in here?

Steve Zissou: I doubt it.

Klaus Daimler: Do you still want to blow him up?

Steve Zissou: No, we’re out of dynamite anyway.

Eleanor Zissou: It is beautiful Steve.

Steve Zissou: Yea, it’s pretty good isn’t it… I wonder if it remembers me…

Yours Truly,

  1. I also have a coveralls obsession and have to say that Universal Thread from Target has some great options that I surprisingly prefer in terms of fit more than other more expensive options I’ve tried from Alex Mill or Madewell! I’d like to try Lee next- super cute!

  2. Absolutely loving this post. This is how I like fashion to be: FUN. I remember looking for a pair of coral pink pants some years ago to channel Pagoda from Royal Tenenbaums. Aesthetically my favorites are Moonrise Kingdom and Darjeeling Limited. His movies are like comfort food.
