Found: An Elevated Shirtdress That I Actually Adore

Admittedly, I am not someone who likes to wear dresses.

It’s not that I won’t wear a dress, or that I feel awkward in one, but mostly because it’s rare I find one I would prefer reaching for over trousers. I lean casual and sporty, and I suppose that makes me pretty picky when needing (or simply wanting) to dress up.

But I still search for them. In fact, I try on dresses quite often.

I’m always holding out hope that there is a new dress out there that could be “the one” I want to grab for date night, maybe simple enough to photograph a wedding in, or perhaps even comfortable enough for wearing on a random Tuesday.

Versatile + Elevated: Gap’s Tiered Mini Shirtdress Is An Absolute Dream

When I saw this dress in the New Arrivals section at Gap, I immediately sat back and went through a mental checklist wondering if it could, in fact, be a dress I could actually love.

I took a chance on it, and to my surprise, Gap’s Tiered Mini Shirtdress is an absolute dream.

To All The Dresses I’ve Loved Before…

I can count on one hand the dresses I’ve had in my life (at least as an adult) that I truly adored.

The first being a plain black tank dress from Gap — it was stretchy, stopped above the knees and had pockets. I purchased it toward the end of high school and felt so grown up in it. I still regret getting rid of it.

The second dress I truly loved was the first item I ever owned from Free People, and I still own the dress today. I found it maybe nine to 10 years ago in a Nordstrom Rack. The dress is black and flowy, has wispy Bohemian layers and delicate gold stitching. It’s romantic and timeless.

The third and last of my Dress I Adore collection is a wrap dress I scored from the #NSale last year. Also from Free People, fits me like a glove, and I’m secretly wishing they would bring it back in more patterns.

This brings me to the fantastic tiered shirtdress I recently scored from Gap, which feels like a full circle moment to that first dress I loved in high school.

This Dress is 100% Cotton, Has Built-In Pockets & Looks Great With Fall Boots

Gap’s Tiered Mini Shirtdress is like a T-shirt dress — except a little fancier

The shoulders are cut the same as a great tee, but the tiered fabric and buttons extending the full length of the front gives it a little more interest.

The dress is made with 100% cotton and is soft and breezy, making it easy to wear on hot days.

Gap’s dress is considered a mini, but it’s not so short that I, measuring 5’9” in height with extra-long legs, feel awkward wearing it. I love how it shows off my legs, but I have no problem whatsoever sitting down. If a longer length is something you’re interested in, Gap is amazing and offers a “tall” inseam in almost everything!

I recently wore this dress to photograph a wedding, simply popping black bike shorts underneath for comfort, possible wind, and because I can get a little wild when taking photos (getting down on the ground or climbing up high are not out of the question for me).

The dress was perfection, all throughout a long Saturday in August entirely under the sun.

I paired it with my Dr. Martens platform combat boots and received a lot of compliments from guests that day!

When I first ordered the mini shirtdress, I had immediately pictured wearing it with my Western boots. I’ve been looking for any and every reason to pull on these boots with a fall outfit and felt this dress could be a good opportunity. I was not wrong.

Wide-shaft over-the-knee boots are also trending for this next season, and I actually have this lug-sole pair coming in the mail that I’m equally as excited to pair with the tiered shirtdress.

The pockets of Gap's Tiered Mini Shirtdress are surprisingly deep, & I used them to hold both my phone, lens caps, & SD cards for my professional camera the day I was photographing a wedding.

Last but not least: pockets.

My love for the dress was solidified when I reached my hands down and noticed the pockets. They are surprisingly deep, and I used them to hold both my phone, lens caps, and SD cards for my professional camera the day I was photographing a wedding.

Gap’s Tiered Mini Shirtdress is so fantastic, I’m even contemplating buying another color. *GASP* Who am I?!
