If it isn’t broken and all…this outfit combination — a sweater + jeans + mules has been a go-to of mine forever. It works no matter what jeans are on-trend, no matter what sweater I wear…it’s almost foolproof. It’s one that sure has made getting dressed easier.
Sweater + Jeans + Mules In Light & Dark: My Go-To Outfit Formula 2 Ways
A sweater, plus jeans and mules is such an easy look to pull off for any casual hang or event — from holiday to brunch to a denim-friendly office. I personally prefer mules to ballet flats, but will admit these are not the shoes for walking all over town. But for easy hangs like going out to dinner, or visiting a friend’s house, they’re perfect.
I’ve included a couple photos of how I’ve personally been wearing my sweater, jeans and mules combo, as well as some additional outfit ideas that follow the same general idea.
1. The Outfit Formula, Dark Version: Black Sweater + Black Straight-Leg Jeans + Black Chain Mules
This first outfit, the dark version of jeans, a sweater and mules, is one of my most-worn combos, being the black jeans gal that I am. I’m so living for a half-zip sweater these days. The preppy side of me is all about that popped collar, and this gives that vibe without being too pretentious.
I love this BDG sweater so much I bought a second one, in the same color. I never do that, but I’m wearing one for lounging and wanted another that looked nicer for wearing out of the house. It’s just a cozy, wearable, fab sweater option. TTS. Wearing a S.

2. The Outfit Formula, Light Version: Cable Knit Sweater + Light Wash Jeans + Taupe Mules
You may have seen this outfit before in my recent post fall outfit ode to straight-leg jeans and an ivory sweater. Again, this combination of a cable knit sweater and light wash jeans is just easy and wearable. Grab any favorite light wash jeans, then top with a pretty ivory cable knit sweater.
These taupe mules are, as I mentioned, favs because they pair so well with lighter denim. I’ve worn them with my Levi’s 501s, too.
