If you’ve never been to Biarritz, it’s basically Europe’s answer to California. The surfing is impressive, as is the cool, surfer-girl vibe. But Biarritz is still very French — and French-girl style is still very much a thing — but it’s a little more casual, perhaps, than Parisian French-girl style.

Personally, I find this casual-cool twist to be really inspiring — think: baseball hats, high-waisted trousers with casual footwear (sneakers, Birkenstocks), and, of course, straw (or woven) bags.

How To Dress Like A Cool French Girl On Hot Fall Days: 5 Outfit Ideas

While Biarritz is typically cooler, the temps soared while we were there. I was impressed by how the French girls were able to come up with seriously chic outfits for such extreme temps. And while there were plenty of little dresses, there was a significant number of stylish gals rocking trousers, Levi’s cutoffs, oversized button-ups and…overalls. Let’s get into it.

1. Overalls & Simple Little Tops

This was the biggest surprise: I saw a ton of overalls in Biarritz. Sometimes over bikinis (naturally), but mostly they worn them over chic little crop tops (with Vanessa Bruno bags).

2. Trousers, Little Tanks + Comfortable Shoes (Birks Or Nikes)

Chic trousers (usually black) were mayyyybe one of the most-spotted pieces in Biarritz. They were always perfectly tailored and most often paired with simple tank tops, Birkenstocks (or Nike Dunks or Jordans), then accessorized with the most unassuming little bags. The look was simple, easy and seriously cool.

3. Trousers, Sexy Tops + Sandals

A brighter, more playful twist on the French-girl trouser uniform was to pair their (still perfectly tailored) trousers with a tiny little top — something flashier than a ribbed white tank — and sandals. High heels for a night out, but flat slides (and woven bags) for day.

4. Oversized Button-Ups + Baseball Hats

The French girls were wearing baseball hats with freaking everything, and I’m here for it. I also saw a significant number of oversized button-up shirts. Some were wearing them just as swimsuit cover-ups, but I’d pair mine with a pair of tailored shorts. Denim cutoffs would also work here, but I like the elevated nature of the shorts.

5. Levi’s, Birks & Baseball Hats (In Monochrome Black)

I saw many pairs of Levi’s shorts in France — of all colors!! (Which was another fun surprise.) But I really appreciated how a few cool girls leaned into a chic, all-black moment, made up of very casual (and very weather-appropriate) pieces. It felt fall-adjacent, if not directly fall.
