These black jeans have become my newest obsession and some of my most-worn jeans since I discovered them in the heat of summer. I wore them one date night with a crop top and heels.
“Wow, I love those jeans. Are they new?” said my husband. “They’re pretty cool, cierto?” I replied.
I’ll talk more in-depth about these straight-leg Levi’s in another post, but today I can tell you I have since worn them all kinds of ways, but this one I definitely had to try, because I love the power of a monochromatic look, especially an all-black outfit.
Outfit Upgrade: 7 Ways To Fancy-Up A Monochromatic Black Look
In case you don’t know my background, I’m a former black-wearer turned color-lover and expert. I analyze people’s unique complexions and help them discover the rainbow of colors that helps them glow (without a ton of effort and makeup). And guess what? While black is not my best color, it’s also not my worst, so I follow some guidelines to make it work when I decide to go for it.
1. Start With The Sexiest Black Jeans (Oh Hey, Levi’s!)

Jeans (29″ inseam) l Top (on sale) l Boots l Bag
These Levi’s are straight-leg, super high-rise, and have low stretch. They’re actually the ankle-length in the 29″ inseam, but ankle length most times means full length for petites like me. They’re perfect, but if you’re taller and don’t want the ankle-length, try these. Prefer a slimmer leg? Try these Good American. You can see more below:

2. Find A Pretty Top With Texture
Let’s be honest, all black can be chic, but also pretty boring. Mixing textures adds interest and breaks the formality. It elevates it from “safe” to “thoughtful”. I love the mix of textures in this Club Monaco top (on sale). It looks super-precious, but in reality, is a very comfy and easy-to-wear top (see 10 ways to wear it here.)

3. Wear Unexpected Shoes
Black shoes are not wrong, but if you want to kick it up a notch, surprise with the shoes. Any bright color, print or unexpected neutral goes. White pointy Chelsea boots are one of my essential shoes right now.

4. Pick Jewelry In *Your* Best Metals & Colors
Let’s get into color, this is the moment to highlight your complexion, especially if black is not your best neutral. My undertone is neutral warm, which means I can handle both silver and gold, but mostly gold. Had I gone for silver jewelry mixed with the cool undertone of the black outfit, it would be too cool for me. So gold, and the warm and rich colors in my earrings break the coolness of the black and make it work more for me.

I get my jewelry when I’m in Colombia from local artisans, most of them part of indigenous communities. But I did my best to find amazing jewelry for you. I found a native-owned business on Etsy with gorgeous beaded earrings.

5. Consider: You Might Need More Makeup
But don’t go crazy. Think: harmonious makeup with your complexion, but you may need a tiny bit more blush, and a lipstick at least two shades darker than your lips to bring the attention up to your face. I look like a ghost if I wear black and no lipstick.

6. Carry A Nice Bag (In Your Colors)
Some people will say if it’s not close to your face the colors don’t matter. It’s partly true, but I think your bag is another opportunity to create harmony in your look, so I kept adding warmth to my outfit with this tan clutch.

7. Last, Act Like The Badass Goddess You Are
My mom used to repeat over and over to stand up straight. She’s the kind of woman who enters a room and you’ll notice her, not only because of her beauty, but also the way she keeps her head up and walks with power. She was powerless many times in her life, but she owns her power with the things she can. I want to be more like her and teach my kids the same.

I love this! thank you
Love all of these tips, and especially the last. I just pulled out my first black sweater/black jeans outfit of the season for back to school night, trying to figure out how to put it all together … so this post is super helpful and timely. Thank you, Julieta!
I bet you looked stunning! Thank you
