Jackets and I have a volatile relationship. I either look like I’m about to morph into the Hulk (gotta love those swimmer’s shoulders) or like I’m borrowing my dad’s jacket, but not in a cool way. Layering with cute jackets always felt out of reach for me.
Until I got my hands on the Free People Rumors Denim Jacket.
The Free People Rumors Denim Jacket: My New Go-To Outfit-Maker
Available from: Nordstrom | Shop Social Threads | Revolve
I was incredulous that an under $100 denim jacket could be THIS good. But, it is. SO. Good. The Free People Rumors Denim Jacket has a relaxed, slightly worn feel, so you don’t feel like a contortionist trying to put it on for the first time. The fit is TTS (I am wearing a large), with the sleeves hitting around the wrists. It’s the perfect length for rolling up your sleeves (literally) and hitting the town.

5 Ways To Wear The Free People Rumors Denim Jacket
One of the things that drew me to this denim jacket is that it’s sort of a classic denim jacket, but with a twist. It has a light acid-wash look, which beckons back to the ’90s — totally on-trend right now. But, it isn’t so niche that you couldn’t wear it next season. It’s spring/summer ready for many years to come.
There are plenty of ways to dress up (or dress down) this denim jacket. Here are five that I’ve been loving…
1| Jean Jacket Over A Black Jumpsuit For A Night Out
Jumpsuit | Jacket | Bag | Necklace | Wedges (similar 1, 2) | Lipliner | Lipstick
Any excuse I have to bust out my GoWeave Jumpsuit by Everlane, I will. I love how this denim jacket softens it up and breaks up all the black. I paired it with my new Clare V. purse (it was on final sale, so including a similar style here), and a pair of old wedges. Add a fun lip and I’m ready for a casual date night or brunch with girlfriends (remember those days? I vaguely do, too).
Fit: If you are between sizes in the jumpsuit, consider sizing up (I’m wearing a 12 instead of my normal 10). The jacket is TTS (I’m wearing a large).
2| Jean Jacket + A Ribbed Midi Dress Perfect For Date Night
Dress | Jacket | Sunglasses | Bag | Wedges (similar 1, 2) | Necklace | Lipliner | Lipstick
One of my favorite finds as of late is this Reverie Rib Dress by Z Supply. Great on its own (it’s short-sleeved instead of sleeveless, which I appreciate), but super cute with Free People’s denim jacket. It plays with a lot of the same principles used with the jumpsuit, but a dress alternative for you jumpsuit-phobic people (I know you’re out there and you have valid reasons!). I also threw on my Le Specs Armada sunglasses because they are fabulous, and I will deploy any method to obscure half my face, removing the need for makeup. We all have our things, mine are my under-eye bags. Le Specs to the rescue! Am I tired or simple tres chic? Who can tell!?
Fit: The dress is TTS (I’m wearing a large). The jacket is TTS (I’m wearing a large).
3| Denim on Denim, Oh-So-Chic
Shirt | Shorts | Jacket | Sneakers | Headband | Necklace | Lipliner | Lipstick
Every time I think “denim on denim” I get harrowing flashbacks of Britney + Justin matching denim ensembles from the 2001 — yes 2001 — American Music Awards. “Cry me a river” because dang I feel old. Denim on denim doesn’t have to be “toxic” (OK, I’ll stop now). I kept the washes of the denim close with my slightly distressed Everlane Denim Shorts, and broke it up with this Madewell Central Drapey Shirt and a yellow Anthropologie headband for a pop of color.
Fit: The shirt is TTS (I’m wearing a large). The shorts run big (size down 1 size — I’m wearing a 29). The sneakers are TTS (I’m wearing an 8).
4| Keeping It Casual With A Tee + Joggers
Tee | Joggers | Jacket | Sneakers | Lipliner | Lipstick
Y’all know I am having a serious love affair with these Salutation Joggers from Athleta. I love how the lighter wash of the Free People denim jacket looks against the joggers. An easy James Perse Tee, knotted at the side, and my trusty Adidas round out the outfit. It’s like the elevated version of my rolled-several-times-at-the-waist sweatpants with “swim” emblazoned across the bum, hoodie, and sky-high messy bun I used to rock in high school.
Fit: The joggers run a bit big (I’m wearing a medium instead of my usual large). Consider sizing down. The tee is TTS (I’m wearing a large).
5| Jean Jacket + A Fun & Flirty Floral Dress
Dress | Jacket | Heels (similar) | Headband | Earrings
The denim jacket/dress aesthetic is a look I’ve always loved. This Farm Rio Maxi Dress is stunning on its own, but the lighter jean jacket gives it a different, more relaxed feel. I picked up the yellow in the dress with these fabulous dangly earrings and linen headband.
Fit: If between sizes, size down in this Farm Rio Dress (I typically wear a large and ordered this in a medium). The heels are TTS.
This Free People Denim Jacket hits all the right notes: relaxed, cool with a vintage — if you consider the ’80s vintage — feel. Just call me Judd Nelson, ‘cuz I’m stuffing my hands in my jean jacket, strolling casually out of Saturday detention.
Just kidding. Let’s be real, I was too Type A to ever get detention. A jean jacket is cool, but it’s not going to work miracles. 😉
