J.Crew Icon Trench: How Does It Compare To Burberry’s?

After years of deliberation, I finally purchased Burberry’s Kensington trench coat, and have had zero regrets. I really have worn it as much as I had hoped. The allure of a good trench coat is that chic, je ne sais quoi, and while the Burberry certainly delivers, after a few months of wear, I now realize something crucial:

Trench coats are chic, but not precious.

This means that I’ve been throwing my trench on in almost every situation. School pick-up, heading to the playground, dinners out, in the rain, and, yes, I did get to don it over a silk dress, making all of my sartorial dreams come true. So this piece I can firmly stand behind. It has been a really useful addition to my closet. If you’re curious about the exact Burberry trench coat I ended up with, what others were in the running, etc, check out my article, Burberry Trench Coat Compare: Kensington vs Chelsea.

There’s no doubt, however, that a Burberry trench coat is an investment piece – it is bananas expensive. Which is why I debated for almost five (5!!) years. And while it does have some special features, a few other options — similar to Burberry’s — have been popping up. Namely? J.Crew’s Icon Trench (which happens to be on sale right now).

A (Kinda) Waterproof Trench Coat With A Hood

At first glance, J.Crew’s Icon Trench looks very similar to Burberry’s iconic one. It has many of the same features, including a leather-wrapped belt buckle, cuff details, and a double-breasted design with a belted waist. It comes in petite or regular lengths, plus sizes and, like the Burberry, it’s pretty waterproof, or at least it’s water-repellant. In fact, the J.Crew Icon trench boasts a hood, too, making it even better for a rainy day.

But the Burberry is a timeless, iconic piece for a reason, right?

In this video, I do a deep dive into the differences between Burberry’s Kensington Trench Coat and the J.Crew Icon Trench.

    • It wasn’t bad! Not *quite* as wrinkle resistant as the Burberry, but decidedly better than what I found at Nordstrom (Sam Edelman, Halogen, etc).
